Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Tough defensive opponent. Foul trouble up and down the lineup. Off game by Cuz. Bad Atlanta juju. What you gonna do? And yet still we fought. that's the upside takeaway. the Hawks had to fight hard for this one, because we never let them get away. We made a few runs, but couldn't keep our guys on the floor, and the needed 8-10 point Cuz surge never emerged. And we were still there.

The Hawks BTW entered the game leading the league in defense and point differential in the early season. Hanging tough into the 4th is not nothing. In fact its really more progress.

Starters

Gay ( B ) -- in the early going was the only guy keeping us afloat, and had 9 of our first 13 points at a time when the Hawks' defense was strangling. Slowed down thereafter, and yet another King's starter heavily limited by fouls.

Cousins ( D+ ) -- looked out of sync on offense all night, and the Hawks had a lot to do with that, packing the lane and throwing a former 3-time DPOY on top of it. Jumper was erratic, and the refs weren't sending him to the line, and got frustrated and mopey. Good defense on Milsap gets him the grade he has here, as impressive work vs. star scorers continues.

Featured Grade
Koufos ( C ) -- Consistent again, nearly invisible but good defense on Dwight Howard. Early on drew Howard into offensive foul then stole pass to hime as he caught it. Got his 8 reb. but only 4 pts. in 25 minutes didn’t held the cause. Always seems in the right place but Hawks loaded up down low clogging his movements. In second half blocked couple shots by Howard but never got offense going. Did lead on one fast break getting full court pass for easy layup. Otherwise, quiet game. -- Cruz

Afflalo ( C ) -- we still need more from Arron, just not involved enough, although the Hawks were flat taking away everybody's postups. Hit the few shots he took, but problem was on the other end when he didn't stop Korver from doing that thing he does.

Lawson ( B- ) -- wasn't sure what to do here, invisible for much of the game, and removed for long stretch due to fouls, and defense. And that was a big thing as Shroeder was bigger and just as quick. But Ty deserves a grade and a lot for credit for singlehandedly keying as mini-run in the 2nd to shake us awake and get us back in it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench

Barnes ( B ) -- interesting grade, because Barnes did it again -- it was his three point barrage which gave us a major 2nd half gasp as our stars were pinned by fouls. He had a few good defensive plays too. But he also made a number of poor mistakes in this one, adding 4 TOs that led directly to points, and finished with the worst +/- on the team by far.

Cauley-Stein ( D ) -- on the positive side, Willie looked more consistently around the ball and was a bit of a presence with his length. On the negative side...the WTH continues. Overpowered by Howard, fumbled not one, but two surefire spoonfed dunks, and I'm dead serious when I say I could get you more boards at this point.

Temple ( B ) -- got a lot of minutes here with Lawson's early foul trouble, and then for length and defense. Still not a creative point, but hit some jumpers, and stiffened a defense which held the Hawks to 41% shooting.

McLemore ( B ) -- might have been the most confident Ben has looked in his entire life. Started slow but came online and bounced right into shots, almost violently called for the ball on one possession, and had a midgame impact because he willed it. But then it went too far, he got wild and we started treating him like a goto guy, and it contributed to the backbreaking 11-0 Hawks run to start the 4th.

Tolliver ( C- ) -- was notably absent as the bench started playing together, with Joerger opting to keep Rudy in to sustain offense. Did finally appear, and even hit a three in the second half, but overall lack of production still a problem.

Atlanta just had that veteran poise. Grown man moves. They could teach us a thing or two. I expect them to finish high in the east. A foil to Cleveland? Remains to be seen.

Anyone won blames this lose on refs is going with same old, tired, self-defeating LOSER mentality that Kings fans (too many) have been whining forever.
It's a natural response. Just means we have really passionate fans. Most of the FT discrepancy can be explained by one team having Dwight Howard, and Cousins getting in foul trouble.

We should have fouled him even more than we did - with some Kings not in foul trouble obviously.

I thought a lot of the fouls on Howard were legit fouls. Most the rest of them seemed like 2002 Western Conference Finals fouls.

Having too many fouls early affects your game on offense as well as defense. It changes everything. The coach, and all your team mates have to adjust for each team mate in foul trouble. In the back of your mind, you get a half second involuntary hesitation on every thought you have.." Am I going to get another foul if I _______?"

Was our foul trouble all we did wrong? Not even close to it.

Millsap had 4 fouls at same point and Howard finished game with 5.

finished the game is considerably different. The Hawks only had to make a single move the whole game based on fouls -- taking out Milsap. WOuld have been big for us, if our coach did not have to spend the whole game fighting the fouls. By halftime our entire PG/SG/SF trio had 3 fouls, and Joerger had had to yank them in and out because of it. Koufos had 4 fouls, and whether we could afford more WCS loomed. Cuz and Rudy up to 5...Joerger didn't substitute guys this game, the refs did.

When you see a difference of 14 calls AND the other team was also playing physical defense you have to be able to account for it. Shure the Kings made some dumb fouls but unless we are prepared to ceede that the Hawks were playing so much smarter and smoother that the Kings that they actually committed 14 fewer fouls than the Kings. It's not an excuse it's simply math.

Cousins never seemed to get into the game. This is the first game in a long time where I don't remember him once racing down the court to get good position. Not taking that three late in the 4th was bewildering.

Rebounds and fouls killed the team. Defense kept them in it. WCS needs to show up on the boards.

Dont know what you guys were watching, all the fouls I saw were legit. A lot of hacks from giving up offensive rebounds. Gay ran into a jumping Bazemore for his fith. Cousins got Schroeder on arm for fourth and inexplicably grabs Humphries with two arms and gives him a goos shove for number five.

I love the addition of Barnes. Great pick-up for this team. I think Mudiay's 16 points and 5 assists would have helped us win this game over WCS 0 points or maybe Marquis Chriss 6 points already in 9 minutes against the Clippers but hey Lord Vlade has all of rookies in Reno doing nothing this year.

Refs and the game rewards the agressive team, when you are giving up offensive rebounds left and right you start scrambling and end up having to hack at guys.

I really just don't understand what the NBA is doing by allowing the refs to over officiate nearly every game the way they do. I complain about it every year as if it does something but it pisses me off nonetheless. No one out there gets their jollies watching free throws. No one out there enjoys the play being stopped for ticky tack fouls. It just makes absolutely no sense from a business and entertainment standpoint.

That's a convenient quick write off of a 14 call differential. I won't contest that the Hawks were more aggressive heck I can even see a 5-10 difference, but all you have to do is scroll through the game thread or research the second quarter to see more than a few hacks on the Kings that went uncalled. The sad truth is even though we're not playing close to our best game and Demarcus was definitely not having his best game either 4 or 5 trips to the free throw line and a couple more boards and his game is an ugly win rather than a loss you could have had

After watching some of the post-game clips from Coach, Ben, and 2k the mantra the team seems to be embracing is " Can't get to high can't get to low". Very true.

Ben touched on his confidence being higher due to the coaches and team mates letting him know they believe in him. He isn't worrying about making a mistake as much as seasons past and playing more freely. It's so hard not to root for Ben to excel. His growth over the course of this season is crucial moving forward.

A lot of basketball ahead, progress is evident already and we don't even have all our pieces on the board yet.

The foul issue was giving up offensive boards and fouling after. The ref issue was a confusing inconsistency. Really tight whistles one moment and then let them play the next.

The Atlanta hawks may be the best defensive team in the league, they have good rotations fast wings mobile bigmen that can block shots and take charges. We needed to be more patient and the kings lost their composure after coming back in the 3rd.

This game was very difficult to watch due to the crazy amount of fouls called in this game...way too many stoppages in the game. Atlanta didn't do anything special but they play together, they move the ball and they play good team defense and to top if all off, they had a hundred offensive rebounds...the Kings for being such a big team, got abused on second chance points. I'd love for Cauley-Stein to wake up and come play, but that might be expecting too much. If I start seeing more of this in the next week or so, I'll be gladly calling for some Skal instead.

I really don't know what to make of Willie anymore. I was hoping he'd prove me wrong this year, but it just hasn't happened. On offense, I think he'd benefit from playing alongside Ty Lawson a little bit more.
Should we trade him while his value is still high?
How is coach seriously going to play when you when you're 7ft tall, but your only positive asset to this team is as a perimeter defender?
I'd rather Willie be a liability as a perimeter defender, but a great interior defender than vise versa.
No one would criticize him this badly if he was at least able to rebound respectably. Pretty funny that Willie was one of the few players who shined under Karl, yet complained about his minutes and role. I really didn't see anything wrong with the way Karl was using him...which was basically the same way Karl used Faried.

it matters when your two best players have 5 fouls by the mid 3rd. Matters a LOT.

I'm reading a lot of praise for the Hawks, but I'm not seeing it. That team isn't really all that good. They're 3-0 but beat perennially awful Philly and an 0-2 Washington team and now us. The Kings had this game going exactly as they wanted it in the 3rd QTR and gave it away. Foul trouble was the culprit. They lost Cuz and Rudy for nearly an entire quarter because if it. And Rudy was in a groove when he had to go to the bench.

I hate to be critical of Coach Joerger, but I couldn't believe he left Boogie in the game once he got foul #4 (with Rudy already on the bench with #5). I kept waiting for him to sub for him -- especially after Cuz was losing his cool and getting into it with Shroeder -- but alas he didn't heed the warning signs and we lost the big fella on a ridiculous foul on Kris Humpries of all people.

Once Rudy and Cuz were out with several minutes still to go in the 3rd, there went our realistic shot at winning. The way the game had been going, I think the Kings win by double-digits had they not had the foul issues. That game went from an ATL 11 point lead to a 6 or 8 point Kings lead really quickly with ALL the momentum on purples side.

Again, unlike some in this thread, I wasn't impressed with the Hawks in the least. The Kings and Joerger blew this one, IMO.
