Don't Make Me Use The Bat

2-10. I think 2-21 counting last year.

But while many threats were issued, I suspect that a fair number of fans just couldn't resist checking in, and if they did what they would have seen was a surpisingly good effort featuring Jason Thompson starring as DeMarcus Cousins, and putting up perhaps his career stat game, and Rudy Gay pulling the Willis Reed to unexpectedly play himself. End result was a tie game by halftime, marred mostly by the Pace vidiots and their complete lack of attention to defense. Cuz or no Cuz, SuperJason or no SuperJason, just another hohum let the other team score 117pts and lose outing. Shocker. At least Quincy Miller making his Kings debut after a stint with Reno had to feel right at home. BTW, Miller was drafted by PDA's old front office in Denver in case you missed it.

Williams ( C+ ) -- eh...meh. But meh > doh > ugh. The Kings are built for a cartoon. DWill got off to a quick and energetic start to this one as we came out surprisingly eager to compete...on one end. Had a backdoor cut for an early dunk from DC. Then a quick post on Chris Paiul. Active cutting and finishing, but quieted down, Rudy returned, and DWill got into quick foul trouble in the 2nd while playing his peculiar brand of non-contact "power" forward. The larger issue were in his minutes vs. Matt Barnes, who he and Rudy made look like Kevin Durant with some...well I was going to say shoddy, but shoddy indicates a sloppy effort, and here there was no effort at all to track him around the perimeter. Rudy took Derrick's spot to start the 3rd, further cutting down on his minutes. And when he returned at the 4min mark of the quarter he immediately did the DWill special with an out of control drive challenging Jordan and getting it swatted in his face. But he came up with a little burst hitting a jumper and getting a run out on the break to help stem the bleeding, and despite a lack of production from that point on, I think played straight through to the end, with many of those minutes coming at PF as we intentionally fouled those nasty centers out of the game so that we could go smallball and allow the Clips to dump 34 on us in the final quarter. --Brick

Thompson ( A ) -- scratching your head and trying to figure out how we hung in this one so long without Cuz a night after stinking it up against the Heat? Scratch no longer. We did have Cuz. Just kinda a gangly uncoordinated Cuz. Still, you would take 23pts 22rebs on +.500 shooting and only 1 turnover any day out of the big guy. The difference being that for him it would be a good game the likes of which you'd already seen a few times this season. For Jason? Statistically this might have been the most impressive game of his career. Impactwise? I'm not sure if that is true. But statistically this was his first career 20 rebound game, and hence obviously his first 20-20 game. And while his opening quarter was eye popping -- think he had 3 offensive rebounds on our first or second offensive possession, and ended up with 11pts 9rebs and tons of energy, knocking down jumpers, all of it -- he never really had a major lull or let up on the glass at least. Offensively he predictably went through a long dry spell in the 2nd and 3rd when he reverted to playing offense like Jason Thompson, missing jumpers, blowing a jam inside, fumbling passes -- and when he picked up his 4th foul late in the third he still only had 13pts...but they were paired with 18 big rebounds as he easily outrebounded Jordan/Griffin/Hawes/Davis all by himself. Now the downside and impact ? was that his defense on Griffin was on and off. He had some big stands against him, including one where he blocked hi and they had words late in the 3rd. But from the beginning he was also not infrequently letting Griffin get deep post position on his way to a 30pts on 11-16 shooting night. JT wasn't done though, and as we struggled to hang in it, and went small down the stretch, JT was in there not only on the glass, but with 10 more points with the game on the line. You didn't really feel that "oomph" when he was in there, but then again, when do you with JT? And he was certainly at the heart of the upset try here. he took care of all the dirty work inside so our runners and chuckers could try to outscore the Clips the other way. Have to winder if we'll ever see another game as good out of JT in a Kings uni. --Brick

Hollins ( C ) -- I don't even know how to do this with our pretend centers. Kings are down their best player (thanks Baja) who is replaced with an end of bench, towel waver tasked with keeping Deandre Jordan off the boards and protecting the rim a little bit. I'm halfway tempted to give him an A, what with the soft bigotry of low expectations and all, but the Kings lost and he didn't help them win. The good, Hollins was active inside, grabbing 5 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play. He and Jason Thompson really were controlling the glass for the most part out there. He was also renting space inside Deandre Jordan's head, really frustrating him with physical play inside. The bad, foul trouble and poor help defense limited his ability to stay on the court. He made his first shot of the night on a hook inside, and missed the last four, including a 22 foot jumper with 12 left on the shot clock. So, not bad for an end-of-bench guy thrust into the starting lineup by the cruel winds of fate, but he didn't earn any additional rotation minutes tonight. --Hadlowe

McLemore ( B- ) -- somehow immediately lost Reddick on the corner for a three, and inexplicably it wasn't the only time we left JJ alone out there. But came back with a steal to start a break, had a nice striding drive along the right baseline, and after a careless turnover up top, hit an aggressive jumper without hesitation. The suspicion that the last half of the Miami game might have been important to break him out of his megaslump seemed to be proving true. He returned to the game in the 2nd and again looked confident. But somehow it just didn't fully ignite, and the single most important thing for a Boogie led team -- 3pt shooting, was missing again as he went 0-4 from beyond the arc. Got knocked down on a big Jordan screen in the early 3rd, and quick shot a three off his own dribble that wasn't close. Had a few more hits in the 3rd, but then disappeared almost completely. Never was much of a factor at anything but the scoring either, and while generally looking better than he has this month, he never hit a three, and he probably lost his matchup with Reddick. --Brick

Collison ( B- ) -- it can be hard to give DC a letter grade anymore. He had scored 13 or more points in the last 15 games he's played, and only broken the 20 pt barrier 3 times. So every single grading night its going to be 13, 15, 17 points, and the distinguishing marks are going to be all about the subtleties. Tonight he was part of us getting off to such a surprising start as he was smoothly directing an early unexpectedly energetic offense, and added a three of his own from the right wing. But he began to get ragged by the late quarter, committed unneceesary turnovers including even a leap in the air before realizing he had no one to pass to error, got completely smothered into an airball against the shotclock late in the quarter, and it didn't get better until after half. He got a an early lucky play scooping up a loose ball and getting a running flip, added a little side jumper, but he simply wasn't making an impact, and by the end of the third we were solidly in the Cs, and that only because CP3 wasn't doing anything back the other way. I put it that way, because it was never clear DC was smothering his opponent, and yet CP3 never really tried to assert himself and ended up having a game well below his standards. Going in, having DC negate CP3 would have been all you could really have hoped for. Added a little sparkle to his grade with a few big plays in the 4th, including a three at the 8:30 mark to cut the lead back to a more manageable 9, and a fullcourt raceout and resounding two handed dunk to get the crowd into it at the 6 minute mark. There were moments, but I wasn't excited by this game. In particular I think its possible the Clips knew his game and kept him from those favorite elbow pullups. And yet, both statistically and in impact he held his own vs. CP3 -- more a race to mediocrity than a battle for the ages, but we didn't obviously lose the PG battle, and again, that's doing your job. --Brick

Casspi ( INC ) -- he came, he saw...briefly saw that is as Matt Barnes quickly poked him in the eye and that was it for his night. Fortunately Rudy decided to cut across the field separating the arenas from the airport and arrived to take over at SF, and it may have opened the door for our newest chuck n duck kid (Quincy Miller) from Reno to get a few minutes. --Brick

Evans ( B- ) -- I am not an Evans fan, but he acquitted himself well in his time tonight. 8 boards and 8 points in 18 minutes of play. He even got to humiliate Deandre Jordan with a nifty post move that, if you squint you might have thought he was competent on offense for a moment. He continued to be too short to really protect the interior, but that is hardly his fault, so he gets an ungentelman's B- for the evening in an otherwise shrugworthy loss. --Hadlowe

Gay ( C ) -- well, an A for the thought and all that. Not expected to play even right up through tipoff, Rudy, who I thought was still out with the knee sprain, instead it turns out was at an uncle's funeral in Connecticut, flew back in, raced directly to the arena, ran in and got dressed, and was out in time to enter the game near the end of the first quarter. That's a good team spirit/leadership move, and shows the squad is still not as dead as the fanbase may think it is. However such an unconventional prep for a game has its consequences, and Rudy came into the game out of rhythm and turning it over. Finally got one of his pullups to open the 2nd quarter, but another pullup turned into an airball. The larger issue was that he was not only no better than DWill at staying with Matt Barnes, (not typically one of the league's elite shot creaters), he may have actually been losing him more often. Got hot down the stretch of the first half, and hit two threes to help us draw even, including the one with half a second to go to tie things going into halftime. He got the start over DWill to begin the third, but was oddly absent from proceedings for a long time. Didn't get his first points of the 2nd half until midway through the 3rd quarter. He would pick it up from that point but never did get into any sort of real rhythm and got a loose technical foul early in the 4th, which did not help. Down the stretch he hit a falling down jumper with 5min to go to keep us in it, but a pair of bad turnovers in the final 5 minutes, including one with us down only 6 with 4 minutes to go, are probably the more lingering memory. Nonetheless, that first quarter was pure illusion. Everybody played over their heads, and we still came out of it tied. Without Rudy coming back to just professionally keep the scoreboard moving for us, its highly doubtful we could have manufactured enough points to stay in it while we were allowing 117 back the other way. --Brick

McCallum ( B- ) -- another game where Ray looked rather more like erratic sparkplug scorer than offense runner. Early on in his first stint the offense broke down under his watch and he was forced into taking a tough tough 1 on 1 leaner to beat the shotclock...and he hit it. Unfortunately maybe that encouraged that as a tactic, because a minute later he got himself into a similar situation, only this time the Clippers converged and blocked the shot. But he added another hit and flat outplayed Austin Rivers, which should come as no surprise to anybody but his dad. In his second stint fouled Crawford on a long jumper, and responded by racing up the court and turning it over running into Hawes' chest. Statline looked more efficient that the game felt, but he was an empty jersey this time out, and if you combine he and Collison vs. Paul and Rivers, we may have basically won both the PG AND PF battles tonight. --Brick

Miller ( INC ) -- new player, rangy SF out of Reno (and drafted by PDA and crew in Denver 2 years ago), got in for the final seconds of the first half, and didn;t even know the plays so fresh off the boat was he. Got his first stat with a defensive board late in the 3rd. Rep is offensive not defensive (of course) but did not hit any of his shots, and he was quick shooting, which you could blame on youth, the stupid Reno system, or just looking to impress. Showed some ability as a passer though and made a nice little interior pass to Reggie for a layup. Broke his Kings scoring cherry when he split a pair of FTs in the early 4th (sandwiched around a Rudy technical). Note: while he's 6'9", he basically was taking Stauskas's minutes as we decided we could do wihtout Nik's contributions for the evening. See if that lasts. Will Also see if this move is investigating whether we can afford to use Nik as trade bait and replace him with Miller. --Brick

Q3 is bigger than I thought he would be. Gotta wonder if maybe they're sending Nik down to D-League, especially with the posting of a blurry picture of Nik leaving the arena after the game looking like he's carrying a box or something.

Major respect to Rudy for getting off the plane, getting to STA and immediately stepping into the game ... all after attending his uncle's funeral earlier today back east. That's heart, folks.

Congratulations to JT on a career night. He did all he could.

Continued and eternal disgust at the LA Clippers. I cannot think of a less classy group of players in all of professional sports. And that's saying something...

Odd game with the hodge podge team holding their own quite well for the first half. Even Hollins was accountable to a degree. Good to see the rook Quincy get some time in the game and he is a ball handler and has a nice stroke. Once the shock and awe wears off will be interesting to see more of him now that some practices are possible. That one 7-0 stretch run by Clips in 3rd when they were up 4-5 was the undoing and the hodge podge kids couldn't recover but did more than we thought they could. After awhile we stopped eating to watch the game.

This game IMO proves without a reasonable doubt there is a conspiracy in the NBA to rig games.

Given the history (read: dislike) between these teams (especially the leaders of each team, Chris Paul and Demarcus) there should have been no reason for the Clippers to let off the gas and keep the Kings close in this game.
If the players actually were in charge, I believe the Clippers would have stepped on the Kings throat and embarrassed them by 40 points or so.

But they kept it close, let some Kings get theirs, "led" by Chris Paul's crappy shots.

Coincidentally, I heard the Kings had a (real-time) cross-marketing campaign with their Indian audience tonight, that would have been unsuccessful if it had been a blowout (as it should have been).
Similarly, the Kings fans are not in the mood to be blown out and would have been up in arms the same week the increase in STH news went out and the sales team is in full-on panic mode because of the blowbacks happening.

A blowout tonight simply would have been bad for business.
And whaddyaknow?
The Clippers kept it close (but not too close, ifyaknowwhatimean), even though it was absurdly apparent they could have blown the Kings off the court any time they wanted tonight.

This seems to describe you well.

It was entertaining for awhile. I was really enjoying the physical play. Both teams really wanted it. But we are seriously undermanned and eventually it caught up.

I agree about the Clips classlessness. Blake barking at a fan who complained aftet Blake fell on him is rediculous.

It was just garbage ball. More possessions, more shots, more points, more pace, more losing. Keep it close for a while, give the fans a show, the opposing team decides to play some ball in the 2nd half, and it's over.

Matt Barnes completely dismantled our SF's, when Matt Barnes is killing you, you deserve to loss. Good to see Quincy get some playing time and play hard at this point any little new thing is worth grasping onto I remember it was similar to me when we picked up Orlando Johnson (whose game I also liked) who we eventually cut last year.

Not sure you understand what the phrase 'reasonable doubt' means.

We never had a real chance at this game. Kudos to JT's game. Derrick Williams is due for a 2 week stint on timeout, I hope. Rudy Gay dribbling into traffic with his patented 7 foot high dribble at a critical point in the 4th quarter was super pacey, who could've known it would result in a turnover? Slamson's nose to ear chain was fabulous. Definitely made the night at the arena worth it!

I watched quarters 2 through 4. I saw a replay of the Matt Barnes eye poke to Casspi. The ball was not near Omri's eyes. To me after several slo mo replays it was a straight up eye poke by Barnes. He should have been ejected. Mean while Barnes just runs all over the court going exactly where he wants to having the game of his life. I would have liked to see a hard foul or six on Matt. I thought it was supposed to be "you hit us, we hit you". I mean, the Kings lost anyway??? Also after the game Ty gives Doc a big hug. I miss Malone.

Eye poke--> http://fightland.vice.com/blog/fight-doctor--the-eye-poke

This was the kind of game us Kings fans have seen a lot of. Kings battle a good team and stay close for awhile. Good team goes on run to extend lead. Kings can't quite get over the hump to catch good team, Kings lose.

On a serious note I'm always willing to be skeptical and you could be right...

Im sick of everyone bagging on JT recently. **** playing Derrick Williams at PF, **** small ball, **** NBA 3.0, and most of all **** these incompetent ego driven front office caricatures. Screw the Clippers, can't wait to see them fail in the first or second round yet again

I chose trade JT to NY. Not because I want it to happen, but because I can see it happening.

JT has a beastly 20/20 game, upping his trade value. NY has made Bargnani available. Yáll do the NBA 3.0 math.

I'm glad he raising his value, keep him. He may yet become the most valuable, most usable player on our team this season.

Edit: if the above several entries don't make any sense, I'm with you. Go ahead and cut and paste or whatever.

I hope for the sake of JT that he gets to be traded and experience some winning for once in his career before it comes to an end. I really feel bad at him for this point, being stuck with pure disfunction and losing for his entire NBA career so far. He could really help a playoff team as the first big off the bench.

The Kings front office becomes a larger and larger league wide joke by the day as the season continues to crash and burn in spectacular fashion. Like basically everyone BUT the FO predicted.

Its just amazing they thought firing Malone would actually help. The team was 11-13, about to get its super star back. Just two under .500. Amazing in that, wow, who could possibly have thought this would work kind of way? Amazing in a maybe PDA really has a gerbil sized brain kind of way. Cause I'm not sure a normal human brain would ever dream of doing something so stupid and expect to actually keep his job.

And to be so arrogant and condescending to actually act like this was what the fans wanted?

How hasn't he been fired? Just start over now. There's a ton of season left. This is just pitiful.

It took Malone a full season to get this team in sync. It took one move to destroy all of it. All of the progress lost. Now we play like a semi-talented expansion team with no identity, sporadic effort, etc.

I was in front of a tv and only watched the end of the first half and maybe half the 4th. Good for JT. They'll respond by trading him. We are at the individual effort is the only thing to watch phase. With a ton of games left. It's unreal what has happened.

Now it's 8 games under .500. Against a much much softer schedule than Malone faced. And mostly with demarcus. Brilliant stuff.

So much for that promised playoff run.

But hey, Quincy Miller, right? That's pretty exciting.

It's very difficult to shake this attitude. Probably everybody knows what you posted and I know I for one would like to forget it but then Wham! along comes a situation that stirs up the memories. BTW, I quit watching at the end of the third. Some people will dislike my attitude but let me give the back story.

I have watched the NBA for 50 years or so and could have watched longer but it wasn't regularly on the TV. I was lucky enough to live in Minneapolis when they had a team called the Lakers but missed most of their success because they moved quickly to LA. I swear I have seen every kind of dunk, fancy dribble, last second shot, etc. that there are and have seen some amazing basketball players, even seeing Wilt when he was with the Harlem Globe Trotters. It has boiled down to winning. I need winning. Fortunately we have a mega player who might do something startling. So the Kings have an added attraction. I will watch wins and days when Boogie goes off. I will record the games, have a pleasant evening with my wife, and then check the score and the stats. I will watch only wins.

This is where I am stuck. It worked for me in the past and I am sure it will work well for me in the future. I had planned to do the same last night except out of curiosity I watched the game from the beginning, It was interesting and I think proved to the team they could win without Boogie. Not often, but occasionally. JT got his moment in the sun.

No game TV at our rental in Dillon Beach. Followed the play-by-play on my iPad while watching the Count of Monte Christo on TV (at least the second time for this version).

A loss but enjoyed the tight game of the first half. JT showed why I wish they would play him a lot more minutes each game - something that neither Malone nor Corbin has done this season. It must be the FO that keeps him on the bench in favor of Landry and Williams. More JT please. At least the hung in there better for a non- Cuz game. Go Kings!!!

RE: The poll.

I chose trade JT to NY. Not because I want it to happen, but because I can see it happening.

JT has a beastly 20/20 game, upping his trade value. NY has made Bargnani available. Yáll do the NBA 3.0 math.

I doubt the Knicks want JT's contract on the books next year. Only if they see him as a piece for them beyond this year obviously. If the Kings were able to dump either JT or Landry this team goes from piddling to interesting in free agency this summer. One of them have to be moved to be a true player.
