Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Grrf...a dreary glorified scrimmage that suddenly morphed into a double OT war of attrition resulting in failure. But on the other hand we finally got to see the kids play, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Francisco Garcia ( C ) -- 42min 12pts (6-13 FG, 0-2 3pt, 0-3FT) 5reb 5ast 0stl 1blk 0TO
With Ron up to his old tricks again, got the surprise start and it seemed like a golden opportunity for him to reestablish some confidence. Didn't do much with it early however, and was largely sleepwalking with the rest of the team. Some low level all around productivity, but no real spark. Appeared to tweak something in the mid 4th, but Reggie refused to pull him, and when he finally did, almost immediately put him back in. Continued to hobble around out there, although like many NBA players all of a sudden the hobble wasn't so noticeable when it came time to get a shot opportunity. Both Cisco and Salmons disappointed tonight. With a perfect opportunity to reprove that starting = production, neither one came up with much of anything playing against an opponent who just screamed out to be beaten.

Mikki Moore ( A- ) -- 40min 20pts (7-9 FG, 0-0 3pt, 6-8 FT) 5reb 4ast 0stl 0blk 0TO
Actually a difficult grade given the timing of the production here. Gott off to the hot start, and had 10 first quarter points. And with that FG% you would think the normal cut to the hoop, get hit in the chest with the ball, dunk, game. And there was some of that. But it was also raining Mikki Moore jumpers and it was comical how aghast the Clippers were at being slapped around by Mikki Moore. Finished the first half with 16 as virtually the only player on either side who could really go into the break with his head held high. Continued into the early third as our new goto stud, but then is when the grade got difficult. Got very quiet in the late game, and in the first OT missed 1 of 2 FTs in the final minute to open the door for the Clips to tie it. Along the way it was hard not to notice that while he was scoring like Carlos Boozer, he was still rebounding like Mikki Moore, which is to say he gave us one more than Dan Dickau. Noentheless, as is often the case in Mikki's grades, hey, it was Mikki freakin' Moore doing this. And you get Mikki Moore to be your dominant offensive player for a half, any half, good grades are naturally going to follow.

Brad Miller ( D ) -- 34min 7pts (3-8 FG, 0-2 3pt, 1-2 FT) 6reb 5ast 0stl 1blk 3TO
A game in which Brad gavce us next to nothing...besides trouble late. In the very early going repeatedly set up Mikki to help get off on his nightly dominance, but slwoed dramatically as did the pace of an ugly passionless game. Basically gave way to Spenser for the enitre second quarter as the game unexpectedly took on a training camp play the kids feel. Was back after the break, but gave us nothing in the third, and may have just been going through the motions out there. Had an airball just fall in his hands on the offensive glass with about 4 minutes to go, and finished it. Was mysteriously dubbed our late game gotot guy to disastrous results. Got to take the last shot on a lumbering drive, but for the millionth time this season a King goes in there looking for the foul and at the buzzer rather than just trying to put up a clean shot, and no, they aren't going to call that. And replays show they really shouldn't have anyway -- Brad created the contact and the shot was blocked. Was back again to mysteriously be the intended target for Beno on our final play of the first OT, where somehow one or the other of them had some miscommunication, and Beno drove and kickd the ball to Brad in the corner...except that Brad was no longer in the corner and had charged toward the paint either looking for a pass on the cut or an offensive rebound if Beno missed. Fun was just beginning as Brad and a similarly grumpy and unfocused Kaman starting flailing about and each got called for flagrant fouls (NEITHER of which really should have been called sicne they were plays on the ball. After the one on Kaman Brad responded by only hitting 1 of 2 FTs, and then topping it off by bricking a long jumper. And then of course after Brad's, he then "helped" us in classic Brad fashion by losing his temper, racking up another intentional foul (not called flagrant but easily could have been) and helping give the game away in the the 2nd OT.

John Salmons ( C- ) -- 53min 13pts (4-14 FG, 0-2 3pt, 5-5FT) 6reb 3ast 2stl 0blk 2TO
You would have thought that back as starter = back to competence, but struggled early and by the middle of the 4th was working on a single digit scoring game. Kind of woke up a bit forus at that point, and for about 4 or 5 minutes in the late game pretty much was our offense. But was also into full Ron imitation -- no pass no how and forcing up utter trash just to be able to say he shot. was better than the nothing being offeredd by nearly everybody else, but whether he was truly helping is debatebale. Was not the guy we looked to down the stretch, and was almost completely AWOL in the OTs. Played 53minutes tonight. Hit 4 shots in that time. Gets a little bit of grade push for often being the guy guarding Maggette, who got his points in the end but took a lot of shots to get there.

Beno Udrih ( B+ ) -- 47min 25pts (11-19 FG, 0-0 3pt, 3-4 FT) 4reb 4ast 0stl 0blk 4TO
So once again, for about the 5th game in a row, Beno was one of our few bright spots. What Mikki wasn't scoring, Beno was in the early going. And unlike Mikki, he kept it perking along pretty much all game. 11-19 for a guard is excellent, and mostly off of the drive, whether it be with those nifty scoops under the rim, or stop and pops for short little jumpers. Made a jumper in the final minute, then missed the next one, and that was kinf of appropriate -- despite the rock solid numebrs, all night long ws really more good than great, and was hitting just enough shots to help keep us going, but never enough to put us over the top or win it. Threw away the pass on our play to win it in OT, throwing it right to the Clippers bench when he expected Brad to be spotting up in the corner, and giving them a final shot from their own goto guy...Dan Dickau. Having Dickau nearly match him point for point and hit several big threes on us did this grade no favors either.

Spencer Hawes ( B+ ) -- 20min 10pts (5-8 FG, 0-0 3pt, 0-0 FT) 8reb 1ast 0stl 2blk 2TO
Woohoo! A kid sighting! Unexpectedly got to play the entire second quarter, and then had another good long stretch in the 3rd/4th before a real game broke out and we brought back Brad to lose it. Considerably outplayed Brad on the evening too. Came in in the early going and had to match against Kaman -- just not strong enough to hold off that big body, but did counter wiht a jumper. Actually...that sounds dismissive and normally would be. But in this case it was just practical. Did the great majority of his damage against the Clippers scrubs, principally Aaron Williams, who used to be a decent backup back around the turn of the century. Continues to display a vast array of complex moves in there in the post...and almost no ability to finsih any of them. Went on a real streak in the third once again matched up against Williams (Spenser was brought in as soon as Kaman went out that time). It was mostly jumpers, but given the earlier attempts to work in the post, this was more showing variety then settling. Did a solid job ont he glass, but did force a couple of passes that had little chance.

Quincy Douby ( B- ) -- 24min 14pts (4-12 FG, 3-6 3pt, 3-3FT) 1reb 1ast 1stl 1blk 1TO
Another diffcult grade because he came into the game in spectacular fashion, and then came down to earth with an audible thud. Finally up in the rotation with all the injuries, and in his natural SG spot rather than being asked to think of anybody but himself out there. Early on looked like he was really going to take advantage of the unexpected minutes. Hit back to back to back long threes in the early second "guarded' by the completely inattentive Cat Mobley. Got fouled on the first one too for a four point play and had 10 points just instantly in about 4 minutes. But that was really that, and not particularly because he was guarded that much better therafter. Just started missing and missing, and many of them on closer shots that should have been relatively easy. Went from 3-3, all on threes, in his opening minutes, to 4-12 for the game. And playing in a true SG role, wasn't contributing much of anything else. Did get one nifty blocked shot on the perimeter -- its hard to block a guy's jumpshot out on the wing when you are only 6'3" but he's done it several times this year. So...good point production for the minutes, but it was almost all withig about 4 minutes of the 2nd quarter, and therafter, nothing.

Anthony Johnson ( D ) -- 9min 2pts (1-2 FG, 0-1 3pt, 0-0FT) 1reb 0ast 1stl 0blk 0TO
Nothing and more nothing in this one. So let's review Johnson's statline since coming on over: 9 games 10min/gm 1.3pts (.333 shooting) 0.9reb 1.1ast 0.2stl 0.8TO. And tonight...you get the idea. That is not only borderline unplayable, its also just about ungradeable. Is there sucha thing as a gentleman's D?

Shelden Williams ( C+ ) -- 22min 6pts (2-5 FG, 0-0 3pt, 2-2 FT) 2reb 0ast 0stl 1blk 0TO
Entered the game surprisingly early, and opened by missing a jumper -- not his game. But in a bit of odd unexpectedness, all of of a sudden the game turned into a play the kiddies night for almost the first time this entire year. Result was that Shelden ended up going the whole way in the second, and had his moments. Was this agreed upon once we got past the Lakers game? Did it have anything to do with Ron's absence? Just strange as it kind of came out of the blue. In any case, after that first jumper, Shelden began to be effective bulling inside. Had a block, also got one swatted by Al Thornton as punishment for his ground boundness. Slowed however, and got less effective as the quarter went on. Didn't get much done at all after half and was largely invisible. The 2 rebs in 22min was particularly disappointing.

Hawes is getting pretty good.. He's 19 still? Yikes.. Such potential in that kid. He should always have a spot in the NBA because he is big, and he can score.
If he were starting the whole year it wouldn't surprise me if he had a 15ppg 8rpg average.

Tonights game I give Hawes a B+. Williams on the other hand.. UGH.. C-?

I didn't watch the game last night, however, looking at Douby's stats, he sure took a lot of shots for only playing 14 minutes.

I sat 3 rows from the King bench tonight. Easy seating these days around Clipper-town (not to mention the Atlanta Hawk-like Kings were in town).

Before you are too harsh I observed a couple of things, Brick...

Not sure if it was evident on television, but Garcia was limping most of the night. His half-arsed looking attempts (including two at the free throw line) seemed influenced by pain. Then again, his approach before the game was apathetic to say the most. Theus simply ignored Garcia's limp and had him play it out, but he was only in due to the owwies of Artest and Martin. He drew some real tough defensive assignments and it hampered him.

On the other hand...

Miller was manhandled (as usual) by Kaman. Bullied. No contest on every part of the floor. The reason Douby has the same "lost" expression on his face is because he has no idea how to play defense.

Mikki Moore has a great time on the floor and battles.

Salmons was furious over being yanked at the end of overtime. I can imagine what he's like when you add two more playing pieces to his role on the depth chart. He was the King's best basketball player on the court regardless of the stats.

It was obvious that the Kings have no "go to" guy when RonRon is not there. Even then he may not be best choice. Overall, they don't have someone who does what Bibby used to do so often. I'd like it to be Martin but........

Beno seems ready to step into that role. Salmons wants that role but is not, ah, er, polished enough (not right words but the idea). All in all, considering that 43 pts/gm were sitting on the bench in the form of RonRon and Kevin, and that Cisco was hurt, I was suprised they stayed in front most of the game. It was just kinda ugly, and embarrassing for the Kings now 0-9 in their division.
