Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Ah well. Back to reality. But still a nice effort against maybe the best team in the league right now. Unless of course the next team to come into Arco is the best team in the league right now.

We lost. Rules haven't changed even though its been a week or so. Theme for this one will be: Funny Women. Not the ones who need sitcom laughtracks to tell you when they are supposed to be funny. Not ones who bray loudly inplace of comedy. But the small handful of truly funny women who break the "women don't do comedy" mold with actual wit, timing and a flavor all their own they bring to everything.

Official Boxscore

Casspi ( C ) -- hit the three to start the game, but was having immediate problems on the other end with Pierce. Seemed a bit overwhelemd, there were multiple early fumbles and he got blocked and stripped before he gave way to Donte. Finally settled in and got his second jujmper in the mid 2nd. More importantly he provided some solid boardwaork and hustle, and was able to handle a stint next to Donte at SG. Never did get the offense going though, and missed the easy flip in the lane to start the fourth. Hit one more three out of the timeout at the 5:30 mark, whcih could have been critical as it broke a Celtics run and bourhgt us back into the picture, but then he quick shot one the next posession that had no chance, and was never heard from again.

Betty White -- I thought where better to start than with the comedic grand dame herself, who has amazingly kept going an going and despite 60 years of playing ditzes she is still sharp as a tack at age 89. All things pass, but its going to suck when its her time.

Dalembert ( B ) -- got off to a great start to this one as he and Tyreke played inspired ball in the early going and carried their struggling teammates until they settled in. Came up with multiple big blocks inside to set the defensive tone, and those are always better in front of a full house willing to roar its approval. Added a steal, and finished a sneaky quick alley oop from Reke. But there were some signs of what would eventually pull this grade down inthe early going, as he seemed to be forcing too many low percentage shots in the paint, often with nobody else near the hoop to rebound. Swooped in for a big dunk in the early 3rd...until KG came up with a spectacular dunk at the rim. And with us struggling badly, things begant to get ugly with Sammy's offense -- Beno of course continues to feed him like he's Shaq in his prime, but it seems in this oen as if everybody was doing it this one in "hey vet save us!" panicked fashion. And Dalembet just kept taking, and missing, tough post moves that he had no business forcing up. Continued into the third, when at one point we insisted on going to him three straight times in there, and he came up empty each time. Unfortunately being dumb is part of being a younf team too. But Sammy ain't young. Anyway, we has some spectacular tone setting defense -- 5blks and 2 stls, although the rebounding was only middling (7), combined with some real crappy offense after the half. So I kinda split the difference, an then added a half gade bump as it seemd to me that the weak finsih to the game was going to leave me with grades entirely too low for a generally very competitive game against one of the league's best.

Anna Faris -- and so it seemed to me that the natural followup to the great old lady of ditzhood, was the modern heir to the throne, who has used her hilarious brand of physical ditziness to accomplish the almost impossible for a female comedian, and actualy become an A list actress for whom movies are made. Not only that, but somewhere along the line she got hot, although I still prefer her as a brunette.

Cousins ( B- ) -- another one of those tale of two halves games. In the first Celtics game a month ago for one of the few tiems this year I thought DeMarcus might have actually been intimidated, going against the absoilutely massive Shaq, who he no doubt grew up watching, and finding that there is absolutely no way you can back that behemoth down in the post. And coming off two monster games, you could tell that the Celtics game plan was heavily centered on makign DeMarcus uncomfortabel as mutipe guys dove in to swipe at the ball every time he touched it. Whatever it was this time out, we got very little out of DeMarcus int he first half of this one, and he got pulled within 5 minutes, sat for a few minutes, returned, and settled for some long jumpers, and they weren't falling. Did join int he spirit of the occasion, and played some of his better help defense, omig up wiht anpair of blocks on his own and consitently challenging. Best play fo the half was a nifty high/low pass to Pooh sneaking in there on a back cut. Started to play in front of Shaq in the third and get deflections and rebounds (althoguh he needed to be better than the 6 he grabbed tonight as we started our two best rebounders, they both played big minutes, and only combined for 13rebs as we got beat on the glass). Was seeing a lot of people from up high with his passing after half, but a lot of the resulting passes and shots were dangerous stuff. Woke up with his own offense late in the quarter in what seemed like a beautiful competitve response. Finally got his first smooth jumper in the late 3rd, folowed it with a tough drive and layup, and then stepped out and hit a wide open three off the kick. Not something I normally approve of of course, but we were dead int eh water otherwise, and there was nobody wihtin 10 feet of him. And hte thing was that his outburst came jsut as the Celtics had passed us and were trying to open up a lead and make the young team quit. And DeMarcus wasn't going to let that happen and singlehandedly dueled with them down the stretch of the quarter. Continued being our main offensive weapon through the 4th, but was forcing some things, both with the shot and the pass, and while the light switch was definitely in the "On" position, never dominated. DeMarcus got back up to his 20pts, and he was unqestionably ourt best player from the moment of his awakening to the end of the game, unfortunately that moment did not take place until the latter half of the third quarter, and I can't forget that in this grade. If he'd come out in this one the way he came out in the last few...who knows what happens. Wait, I know. We win.

Janeane Garofalo -- I thought I would take a break from the ditzes with the queen of razor sharp tongued ascerbic wit. And yes, she's pretty too.

Udrih ( C ) -- Beno did some admirable stuff in this one -- he hustled, came up with several steals, helped on the glass, and in general showed his continuing willingness to be part of, and even contribute to, a young hustling team. ...and yet unfortunately that's not what's going to be remembered about his game. Waht's goign to be remembered is that he couldn't shot at all, missed his little chippies all night long, and scored 2 isolated in the final 22 minutes of the game. Was missing little early and getting attacked defensively the other way. Picked by Rondo in the open court as well and looked far from confident. Allen had littel trouble shooting over him. Was trying to help by hustling and getting on the boards, so it wasn't a complete disaster, but we definitely needed more. When he returned, it was still an offensive struggle, but he got a poke steal on Pierce, and managed some offensive productivity on a series of shaky drives into the paint that teetered right on the edge between tunvoers and getting to the line. Finally got his first hit right before the first half buzzer on a tough shot as we took the 9pt lead into the break. And got his only other one a few minutes of game time later, as a minute into the thrid he executed a wild full speed stop and spin layup. He popped up a few times later, getting several more steals and feeds ahead to Reke on the break, including one at the 1:00 mark that got us back to 6 and in position for another shouting position loss. But other than a smattering of assists in the 4th he was offensively absent as we just could not score. Committed a bad overdribbling TO in the final 3 minutes that kind of felt like a capper for his night, and yet I am not going to go down too far on the grade. The offensive struggles were frustrating and felt like the defining characteristic of his game tonight, but he did do those "other" things. And those "other" things are often the very things that define the split between good teams and the league's turds.

Wanda Sykes -- and speaking of sharp tongued, noone throws a better insult.

Evans ( C+ ) -- got off to the strong if imperfect start to this one, and thought the eladership he showed along with Dalembert in the early going was key, as all of the other starters looked like they had blinked at the sight of the Celtics. Hit a spectacular +1 finish on the break to start things, followed with a jumper, amd then another spectacular spin move to free himself in the open court. Added a great help block coming back to save a hoop on the break, and a quick dribble penetration and alley oop to Dalembert. Did force a couple of jumpers as the quarter went along, but waht really took him out of the game and may have broken his momentum was the most unlikely of causes -- none other than little Pooh Jeter and rotund/worthless/undedicated/smiles too much Donte Greene. That unlikely duo blew up in the 2nd quarter and was playing so well that they spotted us a growing lead, and Westphal was reluctant to break the pair up. When he did return he resumed attacking, getting to the line, setting up Donte for a three, and just generally playing a really aggressive and mostly smart first half. When the Celtics squeezed after the break however, neither he, nor we, were abel to respond until we had lost that lead adn would have to battle back from behind again -- a repeat of that same dead-spot-in-the-2nd-half pattern we have seen so often in the last month. He did hit a smooth three in the early third to push the lead back to 8. But that was it for us for a long long dry spell that cost us that entire lead before we got back on the scoreboard. Meanwhile Reke started to have that missing layups problem again. Came up with hsi second big help block of the game to start the 4th, but was quiet for most of the quarter, and made back to back shaky passes at the 2:00 mark, missing the alley oop to Dalembert just enough that it hit the rim and got counted as a shot (thus he as actualy 6-12 on the night) an following that with a turnover trying to feed Cousins. Came up wiht one late, maybe too late, burst in the final minute, getting a dunk on the break at the 1:00 mark to get back wiht in 6, and adding the desperatin three in the final 10 seconds for the final margi, but too little too late.

Sarah Silverman -- see? Having a potty mouth works if you're cute. Then its quirky and unconventional.

Bench

Jackson ( INC ) -- in very early for cousins...I guess to save him from fouls? Or to avoid the Shaq matchup? And because Landry is too small for KG? In any case, showed a little hustle, grabbed a nice o[-board, but also threw the ball over the court and committed 3 turnovers in his 3 minutes, whichis just special. Then, although you did not see it, apparently went down at the end of the quarter with shortness of breath and was taken to the locker room and did not return. If anybody has any updates on that, please post them -- shortness of breath in a professional ahtlete can be a dangerous sign.

Julie Hagerty -- returning to the land of the ditz, everybody's favorite stewardess from Airplane! still pops up now and then with her patented airhead routine, and its always fun.

Landry ( D- ) -- in for the first time as a SF to guard Pierce, but it was all turnovers and awkwardness. Hit a solitary long jumper, but was not effective on defense and couldn;t even get his shots off, let alonge miss them. Came back in the thrid with the ugly forced drive, but got to the line for his only other points, and helped for a few minutes there with several good defensive boards. That sense that he helped for a few minutes there was literally all that saved him from an F, because he was not only completel ineffective, he hurt us for most of the night. Everytime he got thrown the ball something bad happened as the Celtics swarmed and knocked it away. Ended up wiht 7 fouls + turnovers to only 5 pts + rebs.

Tina Fey -- at the risk of sounding sacrilegious here, I am going to note that I have never really found Tina Fey hilarious. Perhaps a great writer, certainly amazing as an impressionist, but her delivery has never wowed me. But in any case if I had not included her people would have complained, so, voila!

Greene ( B+ ) -- lightning struck form nowhere for us in the first half when Donte, inserted for an ineffective Omri, just blew up and gave us such a huge boost that we did not dare take him off the floor. Was very aggressive and energetic running out on the break for finsihes and alley oops. Added an energetic help block to trigger a break, and then got fouled on the resulting runout, again nailing both FTs as his confidence was sky high. Canned a three in the late 2nd on the break to make it a 9pt lead. And then took a ridiculous 18 foot contested turnaround heat check that miraculouly went in. Finished the half with 15 points as the big offensive weapon behind our big second quarter. And then...nothing. Returned in the mid third and had to guard Garnett, Missed his first shot of the quarter, and was never heard from again before Westphal chopped him off at the knees again. Fun burst while it lasted though.

Emma Stone -- I have detected what I think is great comic potential in this girl. In Superbad in fact I thought she had better comic timing than anybody on the set with the possible exception of Michael Cera. But for better or worse (and who am I kidding its better) she's also gorgeous, so she may very well get pulled away intoa wide variety of non-comedic enterprises as they try to make her into an "it girl".

Jeter ( A- ) -- teamed with Donte to give us a huge lift in the second quarter by getting out in the open court and pushing the pace. Was minute matched with fellow mite Nate Robinson all night, and easily won that battle. Came in and immediately found Donte for an alley oop and hit along jumper. Threw a terrible telegraphed pass for a turnover -- and turnovers were his biggest negative on the night, as he tied for the team lead with 3 in only 16 minutes (sandwiched midway between Tyreke's 3 in 37 min and Darnell's 3 in 3 min for badness). But he raced back on the resulting Celtics breakout to step in front of Nate and take the charge. Hustle was never the question for us tonight. Mixed in another dime to Donte, and another jumper before scoring on a backdoor cut wiht the nice feed from DeMarcus, and sat down having given us a big shot in the arm. The second half did not go as well, but he hit an importnat jumper in the early 4th to cut the lead back to 4, and again chipped in with good hustle with a nice strip of a player large enoguh to sit on him and squish him to jelly -- Big Baby Davis -- on the way up for a shot.

as long we leave with our heads high, I'm fine with this learning experience

We gave a lot of effort and played our hearts out...that's all I ask for

I dont understand why westphaul didnt keep pooh out there for at least 36 minutes. He completely changed the game until westphaul decided to sit him for no apparent reason. Beno needs to man up also. No offense? HE should be benched. HOw can he let his confidence drop that low after the big season he was having? I was thinking we could win this from the beginning and what makes it worse is that barring a couple of stupid plays from tyreke we could have. I thot this kid was supposed to be our star. Cmon kings!

Beno didn't get many passes. Hard to score that way. Ball didn't move enough. And when it did too many wrong passes. Composure, patience. The Celtics showed that. Of course those guys have played since they used pig bladders and it shows. Cousins needs to cut the disgusted poses (where he loses steps on everyone). He'll learn because he wants to win. Greene made some good shots to boost us in the first half. We enjoyed being at the game, fun but no win.

Its not on one guy, you don't beat the best team in the East when you commit 23 turn overs. Give the Celtics credit, great team and great defense. As Westphal alluded to in his post games comments, it was a playoff level performance by the Celtics and it provided a wonderful lesson for the young Kings.

I vote for DeMarcus and Tyreke need to run back on defense and for whoever brings the ball up the court to push push push every time. Also more pick and rolls.

Hell of a game, but the Kings were good for only about 30 minutes in this one, at least on offense. And you can't be part-time good to beat the Celtics. The defense was fantastic until the 4th, when we reached the conclusion that Ray Allen might've lost his touch in between quarters and sagged off of him. Horribly wrong.

Cousins was too timid for too long a period and the team as a whole reverted back to our stupid iso offense for too many stretches as it seemed like we panicked in the face of the suffocating Celtics D. It's amazing to me that a team that features offensively talented coaches like Westphal, Carril, and Elie (to an extent), seems to have completely wiped the concept of the pick and roll from existence. Especially with personnel that could be so good with it.

When we were in this, it was some of the most thrilling basketball I've seen all year, but every single individual on the team lost focus at various points (Westphal included) and you can't do that against this good of a team. I only lament that this was our final meeting with them for the year, because I guarantee a third meeting would've been spectacular and even closer than this one was. A great learning experience for the team though.

P.S., generally when you score 15 points in the first half with great defense, as Donte did, you should expect to play more than 20 minutes for the game. But obviously Paul Westphal does not operate on the same plane of reality as others do. Brainfart? Suffered a concussion walking into the locker room at half? Roofie? Tough to explain.

Considering that we had 20+ turnovers, I'm surprised that this wasn't a blowout. Then again, Rondo didn't even really play in the 4th Q (he still finished with 17/10).

I am a bit surprised that Donte didn't play more after he was on fire in the 1st half.... Hmmmm

Turnovers. Period.

Most people voted the Reke option cause it's the only one that mentioned turnovers. Turns out he only had three.

We turn it over 15 times or less and we win this game, hands down. We outplayed them in most other aspects. Interior D could have been a tad better. A great overall effort. Proud of em.

The team really needs to learn to integrate each other's games instead of taking turns as the center of the offense. It seems as if for a part of the game Reke is the complete center of the offense for a lot of series in a row, then DMC is at the center for a while, then Beno is at the center. I'm not saying they are being selfish because they are trying to pass a lot of the time, but we can't just run our offense through the same guy 5-6 times in a row. That even happened w/ Dally as we went to him 3 times in a row...

There have been flashes. Kings are a young team, and most of these guys havent played together (as in sane rotations) enough to develop a good chemistry.

Great D (at least in the first half), regular block party tonight. If we did a better job of taking care of the ball/rebounding we could have won this one.

Not a bad loss at all. The Celtics are The Celtics. Possible world champ team, shoulda coulda been the world champ last year (but naturally the Lakers shot 20 4th quarter freethrows in game 7). We gave them all they could handle. Bring on the Spurs.

Also....On Donte not getting minutes. My theory : rebounding. It was said earlier this year that Westphal wanted Donte to step his rebounding up if he was to get minutes. Tonight his effort on the glass was Landryesque, whereas Casspi was boarding pretty well. Still... Westphal could have tried the Om/Greene 3/4 tandem for a bit?

Or even the 3/2 tandem he was using in the first half.

Evans may not have a lot of recorded turnovers, but some of his actions resulted in very bad shots for us. There was one play where he dribbled, and then gave it to DMC at the 3 point line with 2 seconds on the shotclock. Cousins tried to draw a foul on KG, but it either resulted in a shot clock violation or a missed shot. Tyreke's our other star next to Cousins - we needed a bigger game from him to win this one.

Gotta love the effort of the Kings in this game. The Celts are a no nonsense team with a no nonsense coach. They are a totally veteran team with just enough youth to keep them athletic. They just play their game and tear teams apart. KG is allowed to foul and do whatever he wants with no foul calls. Maybe that is why he has that huge KNOT on his head! Anyway, I thought that Cousins played a very good game. He was clearly dominant despite being fouled every time he shot the ball. Some were called but most were not. And then they called him for ticky tack fouls on the other end. Totally unfair but that is how rookie bigs get treated by officials in the NBA until you earn respect. I believe this time next year, Boogie will not be getting the same treatment. I think he will have garnered some respect from the officials by then. With a little more conditioning and working on his game, Demarcus Cousins is gonna be unstoppable like Dwight Howard in the post. History will show that Cousins was the BEST player in the 2010 NBA Draft! Evans had a semi off game, but lets remember how good a defender Rondo is. He gets away with a lot of fouls on defense too. If Evans has an "A" game, the Kings win this one. But you could see him getting fouled at the rim over and over with no calls, while Rondo got EVERY call in the paint! Only thing the Kings need to do is play through it. Eventually it will get better. Playing on the Kings, it will never be FAIR, because of the East Coast Bias that the officials seem to have in the NBA. Or is it a big city bias? Anyway, if the Kings keep playing like they did last night they will be fine! GO KINGS!

P.S., latest Mock has us taking Perry Jones. Wholly Molly that dude can SKY! He has unlimited hops and he has a great handle. His ball skills are phenomenal for a frosh in college!

you know.... it looked like we largely outlplayed them to me as well.

but then the stats tell me that the celtics:
outrebounded (both O and D)
outshot (both more shots and a higher %)
had fewer turnovers
more assists
and more steals

than the kings....

the kings:
had a ton of blocked shots,
shot the three well,
and got to the line

still... it looked to me like the kings played an inspired game against a great team... and minus the kings suddenly remembering in the 4th quarter that the celtics were supposed to be better (and tightening up and playing scared) the kings easily coulda had this. that is CLEARLY an experience thing. if they keep playing like this, the kings will start to feel like they SHOULD be in it in the 4th, and will start to learn how to win the gut-it out games...

edit:: win them MORE often i shoud say.... since both the lakers and NO games ended up getting close in the end, but the kings managed to gut those both out. the kings have been playing a LOT of teams close the last 40 or so days... a VAST improvemement over december and last year!

it is begining to smell a lot like 1999 .... (i mean that in a good way ;) )

I vote "all the above"! The Kings need to play a flawless 48 minutes to beat the best teams. A five minute lull means the difference between a W and a L.

They can't run an effective screen to save their lives. I don't know if its just Cousins and Dalembert but they just seem to half *** screens and let the guards run right through them. The Celtics were screening and running the pick n roll effectively all 4th quarter. Pierce would come off the screen wide open and either take a 15ft jumper or pass it off to whoever had to leave their man to guard him.

The Kigns on the other hand don't set hard screens. The opposing guard always runs through them. Tyreke or Beno will come off the screen guarded and then throw it 5ft to Cousins who is guarded....who then looks around the court at 4 other guys who are guarded.

They lost to probably the best team in the league. Boston is a great team with three Hall of Famers. They've got tons of experience in huge games. The Kings played hard, and for their experience level, they played smart and unselfishly. Their D was great. Cousins had a little regression in attitude, but not disastrously so. All in all, you can't ask for more. Now on to San Antonio...

Obviously we had some problems, but I was still impressed with our guys. They played hard and and are clearly improving as a team, since the beginning of 2011. I always want to see a win, but this was the possible NBA champs this year. Our guys never gave up.

Has anybody heard if Jackson is okay. Shortness of breath is not a good thing. :(

Yes. I voted for the Casspi option because he kept missing open shots all game long, which was much more memorable than a couple Reke TO's (and also prevented us from cracking open a much bigger, and maybe insurmountable, lead early). The sloppy offense was as much a team effort as the good defense.

The other big problem was the offense completely stalling down the stretch in the 4th. A couple clutch shots under 5 minutes to go could have kept us in it, but no dice.

The post-game with Westphal is the only update I heard - I got the impression Jackson was feeling better but they were going to have him checked out.

The situation was weird. You didn't get to see it unfold on TV, but I happened to be at the game and saw it. Jackson was walking back across the court towards the locker rooms, got to midcourt and just slowly went down on his knees, then to a knees and hands position, then rolled over before the trainers seemed to react to it. I thought maybe he passed out, because he clearly didn't look hurt. He was down for about 2 minutes, then they got him up and he walked off under his own power. Had to figure he wouldn't be back for the second half.

I do hope he checks out OK. We don't need another Hank Gathers incident.

Couple observations:
We absolutely need to stop letting Dali create offense. Feeding him in the post is ridiculous, and low percentage. He should be focused on rebounds and put backs only!

Did Reke look like he gained some hops last night? He was above the rim a few times, had a great block on Rondo and a mean jam on a break away. Looked to me like he was quicker too.

Celts were trying to get into Cuz's head all night... right from the tip off. He did a great job controlling himself (great for him). I thought for sure KG would have cheap shot or spouted off on him at some point in the game, but never saw a thing. Worse thing was that scuffle with Rondo, and while maybe Cuz didn't need to be in there, he def doesn't take any BS... yea, good thing Westphal jumped in (and handled him perfect), but I liked the chippyness from the rook.. as long as he doesn't get a T anyways.

The turnovers killed us. On Celtic defenders in the passing lanes............. I noticed that on occasions Kings on offense would all play out on the perimeter, and when the defenders came out to press them, the Kings seemed to try and move farther out. In this the inside was wide open but no King ventured. The "court awareness" issue you cite above. I think the improving will continue and it needs to.
