Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Well that...was...exciting...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......

I had had tonight's theme tagged as a possible theme for some time now, but was inspired to break it out tonight pursuant to a conversation I was having with a friend. So tonight's theme: Bad Art

Artest ( B- ) -- this was an interesting game again for Ron. Interesting because Ron did not have a great game, and was simply godawful with his shot for most of it, and yet if you watched the game tonight it was like a PBS documentary on the difference between the "just a scorer" types, and of all the things you expect a superstar type player to do in a game. And Ron is not a superstar, but tonight it was just classic. Got off to another slow offensive start, and I do mean SLOW. Took some tough shots, but more than anything was just missing gimme after gimme. But here was where that "playing like a superstar" bit came into play -- at 11pts 7rebs 5ast he clearly did not play like a superstar. But like a superstar, he did everything else while he was not scoring -- played defense and got an easy block on Yi after the Bucks mysteriously went through a stretch in the second quarter where they decided their goto matchup was to go to Yi every time down the floor in the post against Ron. Was passing well even after missing gimme after gimme inside. Was doing other things. Finally got a baseline jumper to go near the end of the third and therafter hit a couple of big shots late for a bit of mini-revival offensively (think at one point he was 1-10, but finished 5-16). And while playing a lot of PF against the Bucks' tweeners (they don't have a true PF at this point with both Yi and Villanueva being soft and perimeter oriented) blocked shots like a big man, including a big one on Redd late in the game. But more importantly on a night when Salmons only scored 12, Beno 6, and Cisco 2, Ron picked up the slack. But wait...the boxscore says John scored 22! And Beno 14! And Cisco 7! So what the hell are you babbling about you may ask? Well that was the thing, watch the game and you could see Ron scoring half those points for each of those guys. It was his presence, the double teams and cheating players he draws, and his ability to swing the ball out of those positions that created much of the offense we had tonight. Guys should be offering up parts of their paychecks after the game. And that's the sort of effect that a superstar has that a mere scorer does not. And no, I'm certainly not calling Ron a superstar, but it again made his game, and this grade interesting. He put up modest numbers, he shot like crap again, and yet his fingerprints were all over the game simply because the Bucks join the long list of teams unsure of what/how to find a good matchup for Ron on defense.

Geometric Abstraction (Piet Mondrian) -- ain't that great? And no, I did not just do that myself in 2 minutes on photoshop. No, a famous artist "painted" that, and you would likely have to pay millions of dollars to have the honor of hanging half a dozen lines and two colored squares on your wall. And art is subjective and all that and I've had this discussion several times before with artsy friends with a broad conception of the term, and I know this is supposed to mark me as a scurilous unsophisticated neo-barbarian, but...sorry. No.

Moore ( C+ ) -- burnt by Yi early, but came back to give us a solid roleplaying first half of the 4pt 4reb type variety. Minutes were limited after half, with Mikki not doing much to earn them combining with a preference for smallball against a team that doesn't really have any power players. Joined a number of Kings who strugled from the FT line tonight. Overall a bit of a shrug game for Mikki.

Geometric Abstraction (Bricklayer) -- anybody who wants to pay me millions of dollars for this one can contact me via PM (and yes it was completed in about 2 minutes on photoshop).

Miller ( B ) -- spent too much time flopping on the floor on offense looking for calls, and hence not getting back in transition defense (including one time when he cleared out his man so that Douby get get to the rim and got smacked in the face by Quincy for his trouble), but had a pretty solid first half against the woeful Andrew Bogut. In the second half after hesitating on a jumper, bumbling forward for a lurching drive, and getting a walking call as a result, settled in and began to just knock down the face up 17 footers with his feet set. Bogut began to be sporadically effective as the game went along, and by the end the statistical gap had considerably narrowed, but on the court Brad still pretty clearly outplayed him (for whatever outplayng Andrew Bogut is worth).

Jackson Pollack -- and this was the "painter" that started me off on a long and fruitful career of making fun of abstract pretentiousness. Pollack is the paint dripping guy. In 9th grade my pretentious pseudo-communist history teacher had us all do one of those everybody gets assigned an artist and has to do a report on them things. I got Jackson Pollack, and learned for the first time that the drop cloths from when I was helping my dad paint the bathroom were high art. Well, I was only 14 and less sure of myself at the time, but that class preesentation still did not take quite the turn that my prof had hoped it might. Neither did my grade btw -- people get so touchy when you mock their heroes.

Salmons ( A- ) -- and this was really floating between the flat A and the A- and only got tipped to the "-" side for a missed FT in the final seconds that opened the door for the Bucks to tie us at the buzzer and force an OT -- something they damn near did after Redd shook John in the corner and got a clean look at one of his bread and butter shots. Combined with a solid but not spectacular first half leading us in scoring while not looking like he was having to work terribly hard to do it, I decided that there just wasn't enoguh full game sparkle to justify the flat A. Was able to get to the rim easily in the first half, but could not control Redd without lots of help. But down the stretch was clearly our best player and played very strongly on both sides of the ball down. Not only our own leading scorer knocking down open jumpers courtesy of the attention Ron atracted and slashing to the rim at will in the face of the complete lack of shotblockers the Bucks have (the lack of defense/rebounding BTW being why the "talented" Bucks always oh so mysteriously underacheive -- soft don't win), but also really locking up Michael Redd (who is strictly speaking not a great one on one player anyway) and outplaying him down the stretch.
art036.jpg

Covenant -- and this one gets the nod over many similar type things I could have posted simply because I walked under it for years at school. Known affectionately by generations of Penn students as the "bloody tampons", this particular piece of "art" squats in the middle of the quad between the residential towers on the west side of campus and alas is the first thing to abuse your eyes when coming down over the bridge from the famously beautiful Locust Walk down the heart or campus.

Beno ( C+ ) -- got off to the good offensive start, and drained a pair of early threes. Got flat out run over on the slow break when Mo Williams I think (might have been Parker) just accelerated and lowered their shoulder into him as he tried to retreat. Went flying head over heels, and a legit one too -- no flop. Stopped hitting shots -- basically any shots -- in the third, and brick after brick hurt us. Made some scrappy plays inside grabbing boards and whatnot, and while Mo Williams had his moments, he certainly did not dominate the matchup. Nothing great here, but it was ok.
pile-of-dirt-at-construction-sire-with-crane-in-background-~-aa048882.jpg

Pile of Dirt -- and I will have to go back and see if I can find a picture of the real thing once more, if its still even there. In any case Philadelphia happens to be blessed with one of the finest art museums in the world -- a gorgeous classical structure that sits up on a hill overloking the Schuylkill River. It is also famous for being the place where Rocky runs up the steps and raises his arms up. In fact foir a long time they had the statue from Rocky III left sitting out on the steps. In any case, inside you will find some of the finest collections in the country, and originals from Dali, Van Gogh, you name it. On the 3rd or 4th floor you will also find something a little less respectable -- sitting over in a corner across from a circle of rocks (another great piece of "art") are three mirrors (a bottom and two sides) forming a corner in which a pile of dirt had been deposited. Yes, they have a pile of dirt on exhibit. Or at least did for years. Who knew that when I was digging postholes to help put up a fence for my mom that I was inadvertently creating art in the piles of dirt next to each hole?

Cisco ( F ) -- Okay, maybe a B or B+ on most days. But not this one. Earned this grade in automatic fashion for something so atrocious in the fourth that if I were a ref I might have ejected him over it. Caught the ball out in the corner, guy runs at him, guy stops, guy turns away from him. So Cisco jumps AFTER the guy trying to find a foul and hits him almost in the back! I have seen some godawful flops and cheats from some of our guys in recent years, and of course had a full 20 year career of that vomit from Reggie Miller, but that one might have taken the cake. It was pathetic. And of course as long as we are talking about the refs every night anyway -- yep, the incompetent fool called the foul. So Cisco -- boo. Have a little self respect. Now onto the rest: got a little of the good hitting open threes with his feet set courtesy of Ron, and a little of the bad (running over guys out of control for offensive fouls) from Cisco. But whatever the exact good/bad ratio, gave us a scoring boost and was generally better than any of our big man options in the secodn half, causing us to spend a lot of time smallballing to solid effect.
180px-SpencerTunick-Brugge2.jpg

Spencer Tunick -- this is the nude people guy. Basically he flies around the world and wherever he goes he gets a whole bunch of people who really should keep their clothes on to take it all off and stand around in big groups so Spenser can take pictures of them. The resulting picture of 1000 flabby people standing around in some park or some building is now "art" and makes the artist millions of dollars. I trust that by keeping the picture so small that no detail can be made out, it will pass muster here. But you get the idea. So when you hop in the shower this morning, just remember, what you see in the mirror is high art baby. Well...in my case it actually might be of course.

Hawes ( B ) -- came in and was very active in taking advantage of the 2nd softest frontcourt in the league. Had 5pts 3rebs by the end of the first, and should have had more -- just could not get his FTs to fall. Was less effective in his second stint, and woefully slow on some defensive rotations. But was on the glass and remained active on offense, although he continues to have major problems finishing inside. Whether he's being knocked off balance because of lack of strength or just rushing things, for whatever reason his hit percentage on little 5-8 foot shots this season has been terrible.
jet_anemi.jpg

Jurgen von Anhalt -- and I liked the above parody so much (somebody beat me to it) that I decided to post it rather than one of his pieces of "art". Yes, "Prince" von Anhalt specializes in standing up a canvass behind a jet engine, and then taking a bucket of paint and throwing it toward the engine. When the paint gets blown back to splatter on the canvass you now have your "art", whihc he then sells. Which is completely asinine of course.

Douby ( C- ) -- struggled off the bench in the first half, missing his shots, and while being heavily pressured could not get us into any offense. Came in at the end of the third to hit a tough tough shot that briefly brought us back within 4. Unfortunately it was about all he hit, as Quincy was in full chuck and duck mode again (2-7 in 13minutes).
cave_painting_bison.jpg

Cave Painting -- ok, ok, I know it was probably quite the acheivement at the time, but you put down your work for posterity as the first artists in a format that lasts 30,000 years, and this is the best you can do? Tsk. If that's all the talent it takes, I am going to go downstairs and paint a rock myself here in a few and leave it around to be discovered by people (or maybe aliens) in another few thousand years.

Thomas ( D ) -- continues to dazzle with his Kenny Thomasness. Grabbed a few rebs this time, and of course missed the acoompanying shots, turned it over, and in general provided the ngihtly celebration of life that is the Kenny Thomas experience.
virgin.dung.jpg

Black Virgin Mary Covered In Elephant Dung -- yes the title says it all. And yes this was an incredibly controversial piece that passed through New York back around the turn fo the century. And yes, it was nastily insensitive and offensive and was no doubt meant to be so, although yes, I suppose it does have some artistic merit. But most of all, I just thought it neatly summed up my feelings on the KT experience.

Reggie ( ) -- this was truly a drab little game. We never had any energy or spark this time out, and the crowd, all 10 of them, were dead as could be. The whole experience was just flat as can be. You had the feeling we would get this one in the end, just because the Bucks suck and are not the sort of team to deny you anything that you really want. But we still made a close thing of it, were down with 2 minutes to go, and when John missed 1 of 2 with a few seconds to go, the Bucks could have tied it at the buzzer off of pretty good look by one of the best three point shooters in the business (Redd). Somebody asked here last time out why I rarely give grades for the coach anymore. Well, the reason is that I never really liked to with Adelman either. But at least there we had standards for consistency, in the coach, in the team's acheivement for years and years, against which to make a rational assessment of his/their performance every night as compared to other nights. Even so it was always an awkward mix of a team grade, maybe some individual stuff if there was a notable substitution or timeout or something, and then some fuzzy stuff that may or may not be truly relelvant if the team came out flat or firing in the first quarter, or third quarter, giving the credit or blame to the coach. Well, all of that gets even more scattershot when you have a team in transition and a rookie coach. Against what do you grade them? This was a drab game. We won, but it might have been a "C" performance. But a "C" performance compared to what I don't know. We have no standard performance. This was just drab. And then Reggie...didn't do much of note. He continued to use Kenny, which is infuriating. He called the now traditional early 3rd quarter timeout that we/he seem to need every game to get us focused. So that's probably good. He went to more smallball late, which probably helped. But these are minor things. We had bad energy...is that on Reggie? Really? I don't know. So...I am inclined to use this more as a game notes/description section barring something more legit to grade him on.

I didn't get a chance to see the game tonight. How was Hawes? Was at least 1 of his 2 baskets a post-move?

Once he lifts weights it will be, hes only a rookie so we cant expect him to be able to post up NBA guy at this point. And the WHOLE game wasnt boring Bricklayer...that fourth quarter was fantastic imo. Especially against a good bucks team (yes they are good but not right now for some reason)

One could point out that, lovely as this may be, it has neither the compositional quality nor the colors' richness (doesn't come across in a pixelated online copy) that the Mondrian does... but one will refrain from doing so.

:p

i like geometric abstraction! not as an "art" piece, but as something i'd whip up using autoshapes and hang on my cube. straight lines are good. :p

Bricklayer (D+)You are a Cisco-hater. "F"--Gimmee a break. While your grading is usually spot on and certainly entertaining (you certainly seem to have a lot of time on your hands), the grade you gave Cisco was unwarranted. For that, your grade (on your grading) is a D+. You would have had a C-, butfor the jab at Reggie. I'm sure he did make you vomit--if you were foolish enough to root against one of the best money players of the last decade, I'm sure he did cause you to vomit each and every time he hit the game-winning shot.

"D" for Theus with respect to Hawes

I didn't get a chance to see the game tonight. How was Hawes? Was at least 1 of his 2 baskets a post-move?

He's rushing everything, like he doesn't know how many minutes he's going to be out there, so he's go to make it all happen immediately. Hawes isn't a bench guy that can get 5 minutes here, 15 minutes there. His strength is offense and Theus is playing him like a "garbage guy" - e.g. J Williams or KT. That's OK if you're game has nothing to do with putting the ball in the hole, but not for a guy like Hawes. That's playing to Hawes's weaknesses, not his strength. Theus needs to play him on a consistent basis, so he knows he's not going to get the hook whenever the feeling comes upon him. When it comes to how he's been using Hawes, Theus gets a "D" in my book.

That one certainly has the Bucks fans yelling "The refs hate us!!"

That was awful.

We are one front court injury away from Hawes getting starting minutes. Be patient. I am sure Miller will have his yearly plantar fasciitis flare up, and miss 10 or so games. Well maybe not.. He is lighter.. I noticed after I lost weight that running wasn't so bad on my shins, and knees. But never the less, we are one injury away from getting Hawes 30+ minutes.

I'm glad they won but i am still dissapointted that at home we went down to the wire. the start of the fourth quarter is what kept us in the game the rest of the game was pretty sloppy. I am very happy about are bench they again are stepping up and doing it.
Artest (c+) He was just average last night and i think it is because he lost alot of confidence when he just could not buy a bucket. Although when he knows he cant hit shots he steps up on defense and starts to pass alot more.
Salmons (A) I am giving him an A because he has really started to show some real hustle and the defense he played on redd was just awesome. Not to mention he can shoot the ball well also.
Miller (B-) Miller had just an average night again but he showed a little more hustle than usaul and that is all i ask of Miller.
Udrich (B) Beno has proven to me that he will be an execellent 2nd string point guard. He still is young but he really does not make as many mistakes as most younger players make. He looks composed not like Douby who when he has the ball looks like a chicken with its head cutoff.
Gacia (C) He just had an average night again.
Moore (D) I like Moore because he is a veteran and he hustles like a rookie, but last night he just did match up well with anyone so Reggie didnt play him.

KM does the same thing and way more often than Garcia.

I know, usually not that aggregious, however. And I cringe when he does it too. It's a bad habit and the refs shouldn't reward it.

Most of the time, Kevin's fake really does fake out the defender though and those are solid.

Yes! For years when I was little, I'd ask my mom what the heck that was as we passed by on I-80. Her response? "The reason why we don't live in Roseville."
