So I'll give you my pop psychological analysis of what Malone said in his post game. He's very angry at them for their effort because that implies he thinks they can be much better than they currently have shown; he believes in their ability and if they can only access it they will be just fine. If he really told them what he really thinks - he doesn't believe they currently have the talent to compete - they would completely lose all confidence and totally tank. Anger is much better than sympathy in this situation. Resident shrink, what say you?

I say sometimes we leave the coaching up to the coach. Rarely have I seen a time when at least a little chat might have been useful. Hassan was a puzzle. I was wrong about Cuz. There are a couple others but my mind goes blank. I'll stick with my first sentence especially if the coach is experienced.

I like how he emphasized that we cannot be overly reliant on jumpshots. That statement in itself is music to my ears.

When your starting shooting gaurd rarely looks to drive and get in the lane, that's no good. The good news is that it appears that Malone won't settle for players who only look to shoot long outside shots. Part the of "culture" change that is going to be force fed for a while

There are two problems with this trade proposal:
  1. It puts Jeremy Lin on the Sacramento Kings.
  2. It leaves Patrick Patterson on the Sacramento Kings.
While I hate Lin he does breakdown defences and pass and he's a better defender/creator than Vasquez he can actually draw fouls and set up Cousins/other bigs for easy buckets, the reason we keep Patterson is cause his contract expires for cap room next year

The kings should add a psychologist to their team of medical /performance staff. Too much misery. Either that or just leave some of these guys at the bus stop.

The first point is a matter of opinion. The second actually makes Patterson more tradeable.

Yeah Patterson is more tradeable for sure but if we get Asik imo we don't need Thompson plus his contract runs for like 4more years, Lin is for sure way better at getting to the rim and creating for others, Vasquez needs good off the ball movement to get his assists we atm have trouble scoring other than Cousins and IT we need a guy who can create and assist and while there are plenty better than Lin and I hate the dude with a passion imo Vasquez can't put pressure on other PG's either way Lin can at least attacking and getting teams into foul trouble.

We still need a backup big. I know some people are sure that Landry will be better the second time around, but I'm not one of them. And he can't play center, anyway. Neither can Patterson. And, aside from gimmick schemes, neither can Hayes. We have a much better chance of getting a player and/or draft pick with Patterson, while he's still under contract than we will with the $3M that is going to be freed up at the end of the season.

Just to bring up an issue that was being discussed in the game thread - IT just has to pass the ball. I'm not even talking about who gets the shots, or about him passing to a wide open Ben McLemore or Jimmer. I'm talking about like here, take the ball, now pass it to someone while I run in a circle then give it back to me. IT in the first half almost literally did not pass the ball at all, which is astonishing to say the least for a PG. And I would have imagined that a PG would understand the need to let others FEEL involved. Anyone who has worked in any group, be it sports or just a school project knows this. If you don't feel like you're appreciated or that nobody cares about your input, then you're not going to feel motivated to perform at your best. The same goes in basketball - if you're not touching the ball, you won't want to play hard, plain and simple. Sure, we can talk about how these are professional athletes being paid millions of dollars, yadayadayada, but it's human psychology (maybe Glenn can step in and back me up here with some real theory :p)! And moving beyond that, maybe you could argue that guys like Luc and Chuck are out there to play defense. Fair enough, but what about Ben and Jimmer? They are out there primarily as offensive weapons, and very much to their credit I thought both of them played very hard and hustled all game long despite not getting that many touches.

Jimmer, while lacking the ballhandling of IT, is a far more natural PG (other than suspect play right at the end). He was feeding Cuz in rhythm, got the ball to GV for an open 3 and so on. A very good game for him despite it not showing on the stat sheet, and frankly I really feel that he deserves to play over MT and Salmons.

Cousins is a beast.

You don't need my opinion. You laid it out very well. How often will guys who fight off the ball to get open keep doing that if there is no reward to it? It's a team game (duh!) and pretty soon IT will find that all his self important energizing will leave him as the only guy on the court working hard. IT may score a lot but a disheartened group of team mates may not work hard at not only getting open but rebounding and the like. It's human nature. I am hoping this "new culture" has to do with developing an unselfish team. Everybody benefits from an unselfish team although IT may get less accolades from the TV announcers. In an unselfish team, IT will be the recipient if he is open. He doesn't have to hang on to the ball as if he will never get it back or pretty soon he will find that HE doesn't get it back. What good is that if it plays out that way. The other 4 are not his caddies. On Friday he seemed to be looking more for his team mates so it seems obvious that he can change and still be a great contributor.

BTW, am I the only one who suspects that all the positive hysterics about IT is on direction from management to keep interest in the team and sell tickets. Grant and Jerry do not help the problem, if we agree IT's selfishness is a problem, by pumping up his ego about his spectacular plays. Yes he is spectacular but I think there is a price to be paid for that. Heck, VF21 already laid this out very well as have others. I don't understand why IT's special fans can't see what is trying to be said. They don't have to agree but at least try to understand the point being made.

Feel bad for coach.. you can tell he is taking it personally... It's going to be a long season and I hope he takes it in stride and understands that the fans will give him a latitude do get it done over the long term... One good thing from that interview is that I would be surprised to see gutless thornton and over the hill salmons both in that starting lineup come next game

YES.

This was my first time seeing it. This guy is a leader becuase he puts so much of himself into the team... something the slackers he's calling out don't do. Yes, he IS taking it personally, but more importantly he's demonstrating that everybody needs to take it personally. Some aren't.

I love his decisiveness. This is not lineup tinkering. You do what you need to do Coach Malone.

I love Malone, I really believe he's a great coach and he will prove it. The fact is that this team is just bad. We have one star, DMC, a great 6th man (IT), a potentially great rookie (McLemore) and a good PG (Vasquez). Other than that, we have nothing. But, considering we are in year 1 of the new rebuilding, this is not a problem for me. I just want to see some moves in the next months, and hopefully a high pick in the next draft.

Right now, I just want to see Salmons out of the rotation, he can do nothing. I believe we could find much better SF in the D-League at the minimum salary. MT too, he's having his chances but he's giving us nothing. I'm not a Jimmer fan, but I'd rather have Jimmer out there, at least Jimmer will hit his open shots.

We are going to lose this year, a lot. Just give me this DMC every night, and an improved McLemore, and I'll be happy about our future (and please, let's find a way to dump MT).

after the game in Portland, this was a fairly steep regression, as far as IT's passing is concerned. but it's one of the few things worth monitoring this season (aside from, as Brick mentioned, Cuz, Malone and Ben), imo. hope he can get back to that style of play, otherwise he severely limits his own ceiling, as far as what kind of player he can be.

Grant and Jerry do too much cheerleading, talking about how fun IT is to watch all the time. I think they are just trying to sell tickets.

No one graded Luc....not sure what grade he gets but I liked what I saw from him on defense there at the end. He helped make it difficult on Lamarcus A. I see how he's considered a good defensive player. Moves his feet, long arms, just enough quickness, but he knows HOW to play defense. If he plays PF, we are weaker on the boards but then he's no worse than PPat on the boards. I think Malone let these first 6 games play themselves out and now when the changes come.....the guys getting replaced can't say they didn't have an opportunity.

Not really unlike the current two Pf's he actually understands the concept of boxing out and he plays D with aggression and is physical plus a lot of the rebounds against us atm are cause of the non stop penetration forcing rotations and our guards/forwards not boxing anyone out I never seen a team box out so little as we do atm.

I don't know what happend to the Patterson of last year but seriously to me he's been the biggest disapointment for the Kings, last year he was just solid at everything this year it's just painful to watch.

I thought he looked like a solid defensive player, who is getting his feel for the game back and not trying to force anything on offense. I'm sure Coach was happy with the approach, as we did get a small glimpse of why Moute earned his defensive reputation. They moved him over on Aldridge and he did a very solid job.

The nice thing about playing him with Cousins and a shooter like Ben, is those guys will get more shot attempts

I have been critical of the FO because of some moves that I think really stunk but the hiring of Malone and the drafting of McLemore should give us all a lot to look forward to.

I hope we all recall that Malone was hired before we had a GM.

I went into this game fully expecting to be suicidal after the game but came out of it hysterically happy about Ben but also very happy about Prince. I think in the game comments someone said he wasn't contributing a thing but I think that referred to scoring. He will not score. He was brought here (I am assuming) because he has a special skill and when you look at the addition of Ben, Landry, GV, and Luc, you see some complimentary skills. Ben and Landry will score and Luc will defend at a high level. GV will orchestrate. Don't anyone quote me as saying I approved of the Landry signing but taken as a group, it isn't so bad.

It's a team game.

Talking up players is sorta Grant's forte. I'll never forget the days after the "moveable pieces" trade when he kept favorably comparing K9 to C-Webb.

I went to the game and I failed in my guarantee to see improvement (although Portland scored 8 less points than the night before).

Looking forward to seeing what changes Malone makes to the rotations. Such changes are limited in their potential for success because we're dealing with the same twelve players. IWish Malone and the players luck. None of that bunch wants to lose (despite the tank fans views to the contrary) and we know darn well a loser doesn't set well with Ranadive.

Wednesday I hope for some break-your-butt play, win or lose.

I've hated MT's game from the start, but even I never thought he'd drop to such low levels of doodieness. We have to get rid of him. Dude is poison.
