Well stated.
I will also add that while I think it is commendable to give Corbin a fair shot at coaching this team, I do not think that the FO will put up with looking lost and losing with him very long either. The FO is aggressive and not willing to put up with a "losing culture."
I hope that the improved talent includes a sharp shooter. I think one could make a really big difference for this team. We have drafted poorly in this area of recent and it is really hurting us right now.
As the roster sits right now, I think that if a season went very smoothly (as in very few missed games due to injury) we could win slightly more than 40 games - maybe.
curiously enough, they also don't seem willing to put up with a "winning culture," either, as pete d'allesandro has been quoted as saying that he wouldn't have cared if the kings had won quite a lot of games in the early portion of the season, he still would have fired michael malone. that said, i question the front office's priorities, and i honestly do not believe that they will deviate from their stated plan to allow corbin to coach the rest of the season; they either think that corbin is a much better coach than he actually is, or that some of the players they've acquired are much better than they actually are, or they're intentionally trying to lose enough games so that they're able to hold onto their 2015 first rounder...
beyond that, who would they hire in corbin's place, at this point? if they had wanted george karl, he would be the head coach of the kings already. the same goes for mark jackson, i have to imagine. i mean, if you're absolutely sold on any of the available head coaching candidates, you don't give tyrone effing corbin a "fair shot" instead of hiring a coach who represents a
clear upgrade--though i'm not that wild about jackson, personally, and i'd only be interested in seeing karl hired because he seems the best able to satisfy the new regime's "vision" for this team (a vision that i'm not particularly fond of). but since no serious contact was made with any potential candidate outside of the organization, the kings' front office is clearly not as interested in the available candidates as conventional wisdom would otherwise dictate...
i am, admittedly, rather nervous that the front office intends to install chris mullin as head coach in the off-season, because it seems like the kind of move that vivek has been waiting for an excuse to make, but i honestly think the new regime is just waiting to see how the coaching landscape will be affected by further mid-season/end-of-season firings. a guy like david blatt may become available, and someone like blatt could very well appeal to the front office's vision. or they may try to poach someone like alvin gentry away from his current post, believing that they can smooth over any existing tension by offering a readily available head coaching position, rather than the potentially vacant head coaching position that gentry was so wary of when the kings attempted to hire him as an assistant. ultimately, who knows?
it could be that the kings eventually hire a head coach that most fans are satisfied by (and what a relief that would be), but no matter who ends up filling the job in the long-term, i remain perturbed by the front office's seeming intention to throw away the 2014-2015 season, as well as another year of demarcus cousins' prime. it just doesn't sit well with me at all, not when things began on such a strong note...
