Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Peja ( B+ ) -- no Patterson tonight, and Peja took advantage for an efficient offensive game. Had a cute play in the third quarter where he accidentally found himself in the paint faced by the mighty Joel Wiltbilla, who had already blocked something like 8 shots at that point. Peja stood there and gave about three or four little twitchy upfakes to confuse the MVP before laying it up over the side of the rim. Made what might of been his first hustle play of 2005 in the third hitting the floor to knock a ball ahead, and amusingly came up with a boo boo. Will he dare to hit the floor again this season and risk further floor burn agony? The world waits with baited breath. Did a solid job of defending Miles, although that is no more complex than backing off and not letting him dunk. Stats also say he nabbed five steals, but while he was active defensively, he was hardly that sort of whirlwind -- they were more of the teammate knocking them loose and Peja picking them up variety than true picks. Good overall game as Peja and Thomas were the primary vehicles of Portland's demise tongiht (beyond the incompetent Blazers themselves).
Thomas ( A ) -- got off to an excellent energetic start, and was consistently forcing his way inside (sometimes unwisely given the Blazers' shotblockers) rather than settling from outside. Has a bit of an attitude problem, but that's meant in a good way -- won't be intimidated, and while that has the potential to make him stupid, at least he's not scared. Was active on defense, but not always effective as his counterpart actually outscored him on a 25pt night. Our best boarder on a night when we got crunched again, but no match in there for the Blazers' newly minted HOF behemoth. Get the feeling watching him this last week that he is playing with a serious chip on his shoulder right now.
Ostertag ( B ) -- took a cue from Skinner and got off to a great start dominating the first few minutes of action. But the lack of shape showed up quickly as he was actually huffing by the 10:10 mark of the first quarter. :o Was less effective thereafter, but still had moments. Was just having problems guarding Wiltbilla inside, and on the other end of the floor had his shot blocked 2 or 3 times. Banged around and tipped a lot of balls, but was a step slow on several occassions. Not a dominant performance by any stretch, but hopefully good enough to earn a little confidence from Rick to play him in the future when the situation calls for a big galoot.
Mobley ( C+ ) -- quiet first half beyond one spectacular behind the back pass to KT on the break. Got it going a little in the second half, but still a pretty quiet 19. Hard to say how much the injury effected him, because he did not look so much uncomfortable as just picking his spots (and truth be told, has he EVER not had some nagging injury since arriving in Sacto? Always something). Didn't have much luck on defense against Mighty Mouse in particular, and lost the rebounding matchup to his 5'10" opponent 11-1.
Bibby ( C ) -- keyed a revitalized passing attack in the first half, but never did get his own offense going. Still more than enough against an opponent intent on beating itself. For the second time in a week got matched up against a kid fresh out of high school -- Mike has to be feeling positively geriatric at the ripe old age of 26. Got the feeling that the energy wasn't high again, but after a while Mike faded so far into the background, and Sebastian Telfair was so irrelevant, that it was hard to tell.
Evans ( B- ) -- came in with tremendous energy again, and really gave us a spark on the glass...and then wasn't heard from again until the final two minutes of the game? Missed his shots, and his minutes came during our worst defensive quarter, but really now.
Songaila ( B- ) -- came in back in his comfortable reserve role and just kind of played his game...right up until the point where he realized the jersey he was wearing and got injured on a scary fall caused by being pulled out of the air by the King Konglike Wiltzilla on a blocked shot. Clean play, but a huge fall right on his back. Before going out got aggressive on the offensive glass again. Also was invisible on the defensive glass again. Would like to see that reverse itself actually. Whenever he's able to return that is.
Williamson ( B- ) -- could not get much going in the first half. Knocked a jumper down off the glass, but was mostly forced outside by the Portland shotblockers, and victimized on the other end for being too stubby. Shooting jumpers is just not his strength as a player -- he's pretty much a mismatch specialist with his post game. Had considerably more luck in the 4th, when we went with him for the entire quarter, and Mike was looking for him and setting him up for shot after shot. Didn't hit many of them, but worked his way into a nice scoring quarter, and even grabbed some boards along the way.
House ( B+ ) -- very nice first half stint offensively, knocked down a series of in control jumpers before forcing his final shot of the half. On the other end though was getting lit up by Mighty Mouse who settled into one of those grooves where everything he threw up went in. Added a couple of garbagetime minutes at the end.
Martin ( INC ) -- garbagetime
Daniels ( INC ) -- garbagetime

Adelman ( B ) -- Solid victory, albeit over just about the worst team in the NBA right now. We made very few mistakes on offense, other than charging in repeatedly to the rim in an apparent effort to let the Blazerrs set a shotblocking record. Thought Rick drew the rotation down unnecessarily short again -- in the second half we totally forgot about two guys who played pretty well in the first half in Evans and House, and still had our starters in there with 2 minutes to go in the game. Just so many minutes there -- do we REALLY need to play FOUR guys 40+ minutes on a night when we beat a team that has lost 14 of 15 by nearly 20 pts? If that's not an excuse to play some backups, there never will be one. Rick was kind of forced to play Tag in this one with all other available centers out with injury. And the big lug responded with good enough play to perhaps dispel that "he can't matchup" excuse for a while. Joel Przybilla joins the Kings all-nightmare team -- here's a thought to cause Kings fans many a sleepless night: imagine a team composed of Joel Przybilla, Jason Richardson, Nick Van Exel, Bruce Bowen and Eddie Griffin with Robert Horry off the bench. We'd be like the Washington Generals.

I agree with all your grades excpet RA's . As you said and I said in another thread we possibly beat the worst team in the NBA at this point in the season.

He was overplaying and extending minutes of players that didn't need to be. I may drop that into the C range. Was not happy with how many min Nasty or Bibby played. Also not happy since Tag and House should have played more. A win is a win 20 points / 1 point no need to overextend guys. Also Darius got injured which is even a bigger blow to us. He got hurt while playing during normal staring players time. We have players that need as much rest as they can get so they are fresh for the playoffs. Not happy with RA tonight and I don't complain about him much.

I never give grades but this was absolutely ridiculous...i personally could not stand the way the crowd responded...to me it was like a half-a$$ed effort...usually i never can actually hear what certain individuals in the crowd are actually saying...but i could of joined in on conversations tonight...it seemed to me they only really showed up when it was time to boo...and shots made by the guys were just given the general golf clap...i don't care if we played the lowly Blazers get up and clap our team won by 19 pts gosh sakes...a wins a win...they had absolutely no energy...I think me and my dog Samone could of been alone in ARCO and made more noise and came with more energy then they did...::thumbs down::

Brick-great grades as always...keep up the good work :)

Kenny Thomas is the man!!! We got some good players in that trade. I hope he proves he can be the man at PF for the Kings next season. Those dunks on Ratliff were just plain nasty.

Well you have to admit it was a pretty boring all around game. The Blazers are just horrible right now and the Kings walked all over them from the tip off.

I said in other posts I must be in a very very bad mood or something. I worked for 11 hours today. My avg workday is about 4 - 5 hrs. So I was out in the rain, I think I am just a bitterman right now.

And since I got rained on all day I think I want to rain on everyone elses parade

How can you be a bitter man with avg workday of 4-5 hrs?

Well, now, that's just plain funny.

I was tempted to turn Mike into a drinking game tonight -- take a shot every time he adjusts one of his many braces!!

The knee must have been bothering him tonight, because he was fiddling with it every time play slowed even a little bit.

Every time I drive through Yuba City on 99, i see TONS of businesses, restaurants, stores...but no residential areas. Where do all the Yuba City folk live anyway?

That hurts a bit. I was there, I yelled. It wasn't that quiet in there. Oh, well. I guess Ill have to go see a better team to get the true Acro thunder experience.

Was Peja booed?
:(

This Win Good For Our Guys ...

Good grades ....

I hope this win gives our guys the push-start they need to finish-out the regular season.

It was nice to see the King's get the lead and NOT GIVE THE GAME BACK !!!

I don't understand the comments about the crowd. Although it might not have always been picked up by the microphones - and they use pretty good noise filters for the Comcast broadcasts - I wasn't upset about what I heard. True, ARCO may not have been thundering, but I wouldn't have called it that quiet.

Stop the whining folks! Rick G.W.E. Adelman just won his 700th game, the Kings won an important game, and there was a 7:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Some of you would complain for being hung with a new rope.

What a bunch of whiners!

It seemed retty quiet at times on Blazers broadcast, but people should know b now not to believe everything they hear :). Like you said, they used filters to quiet the crowd noise. I go more by looking at reaction of people in the crowd to judge the level of inensity and crowd involvement.

I listened to the game a little on 1140, and the noise at Arco was almost deafening. I could barely hear the broadcaster, so I think it could be the filters on television.

I agree. I also listened on radio too and I thought the crowd was pretty loud.

Nice to see Thomas start the game. He had a great game! He said in the post-game show that he didn't know he was going to start until game time. (Adelman said he talked with Darius earlier that day and Darius didn't mind if he started or not.) Thomas also said he didn't know Coach got his 700th win. He said he likes the Kings organization and hopes to be with the team for a few more years. Asked about Joel and Theo R., Thomas said that they're blockers, that's why he decided to start dunking the ball. Good move, K9! ;)

Good to hear he likes it here. We appreciate his efforts as well. :)

As far as dunking the ball when there are blockers - can someone pass that lesson on to Peja and Brad as well? :)

Although that is what Darius was trying to do and that didn't turn out so well.... Hope you are back soon, big guy.

Usually whether or not the crowd was into the game doesn't really bother me...but on the Blazers feed I could of heard a pin drop on the court thats how quiet TO ME the crowd was...now when i watched the Kings feed when CSN aired the rerun...i didn't really notice how the crowd acted...so i guess their is a difference in the broadcasting

Im over it now...although last night i was rather dissappointed...prolly cuz i was jumping up and down with everything the Kings did (I was pumped) and i felt like i was the only one...::shrugs::

I think that's the answer, Sha! ;)

Whenever the Kings are on news10 and ESPN (same game), I always notice that on news10, we can hear the fans more. So I think it's just the boardcasts.
