Grade the Kings Draft

How do you grade the Kings DRAFT?

You can't just ignore the trade, because there are players they missed out on by trading down.

Trade down - F (We got absolutely nothing positive out of it. It would've been better if we had just gotten Fedette at 7 and did nothing else. Plus, we missed out on Walker by trading down.)

Taking Fredette at 10 - B- (It should be an even lower grade if they took him just because that's who the Maloofs wanted)

Taking Honeycutt - B (I didn't like Honeycutt in the first round, but he's pretty solid talent for the 2nd.)

Overall, they get maybe a C-

What don't you like about the #10 pick? Is it the trade that boggles your mind of Fredette vs. Walker vs. Knight?

Honeycutt was a great pick considering many believed he would go in the late first round. He also plays a position of need on this team -- A+

Thomas is a steal and will be a high energy player off the bench -- A

My opinion is an opinion? Thanks for that, I never would have known otherwise.

Ah, appeal to authority, my favorite logical fallacy. I better not catch you ever disagreeing with anything the Kings do if that's your true feelings on the matter. In fact, I better not catch you ever disagreeing with any professional basketball organization, since they're all obviously more qualified than you are.

Yes, your opinion is just an opinion, and I was reminding you because you seem to think your opinion is fact and it ain't.

As far as agreeing/disagreeing with GMs or front offices, well, there is a tactful way to go about it and there is a pompous arrogant jerk way of going about it. Guess which one applies to you.

BTW....your name in real life must be Vlade.

Why would they say otherwise even if Fredette wasn't their #1? No one comes out of the draft saying they didn't get what they wanted all along. It's called PR.

This part is true but Petrie isn't stupid. If they wanted knight they wouldn't have traded back before the draft even started knowing he could potentially fall ala Cousins.

I meant as far as selling specific players as being at the "top of their list."

I'm not going off of mock drafts for anything, thanks for the condescension though. I'm saying there is no way to know who liked who the most behind closed doors. Sure, you can get an idea before the draft who they like, but something as specific as who they liked the most out of a particular group (assuming they were even all together on it), is probably unknowable for anyone who isn't in the inner-circle.

Thanks for letting me have the choice to not believe you.

I think we all hope they made the right choice.

Um, Jimmer WAS at the top of their list unless one of the top two or so dropped. And that didn't happen. I know you refuse to believe it, but yes, some of us know for a FACT that before draft day Jimmer was at the top of the list. I can't go into details but it is the truth. I'm done arguing the facts to those that won't listen.

Vlade I think if you put personal preferences aside and just apply logic, you'll come to the conclusion that it was Fredette that they really wanted, or it was an equal toss up between Fredette and Walker. So here are the facts as I know them to be. They had the 7th pick. I'm pretty sure that they knew for sure that probably there was a good chance that both Walker and Fredette would be available at that pick. Now according to Petrie in a post draft interview when asked if the draft went the way they thought it would, he stated that the first 6 picks went exactly the way they thought it would. He said he knew that certain teams in front of them were going to go with big men. You can choose to believe that or not.

When the Kings decided to make the trade for Salmons they were dealing with two other teams. Charlotte and Milwaukee. Obviously the Kings wanted to aquire Salmons, and thought they could do so and still aquire the player they wanted. I think logic tells you that they wouldn't have made the trade, if they thought for a moment they wouldn't be able to still draft the player they wanted. They knew that Charlotte was going to take a PG, and if your trading with them, you'd have to know just who it was that they were going to take, before you agreed to the trade. So I'm sure that the Kings knew that Charlotte was going to draft Walker, and therefore they must have wanted Fredette.

Now I thought Fredette was the choice for quite a while just based on little things. Like the Kings basicly becoming mum on Fredette after first praising him in his workout. After hearing from someone that witnessed the workout of Fredette, Walker, Knight, Leonard, and others, and seeing the reaction of Petire, Westphal, and the Maloofs after each players workout.

Personally I would have been happy with either Fredette or Walker, but I leaned more of the direction of Fredette because of his shooting ability. Apparently so did Petrie. For you to say that post-draft PR doesn't count, just doesn't make any sense. The PR that shouldn't count is pre-draft PR. Most of that PR is all smokescreen. One thing you can usually count on, is that when a team makes a positional move on draft day, they usually get the player they want. Otherwise they wouldn't make the move.

I'm sorry you took the time to write that long post, because I don't really care all that much about this point considering I don't care if Fredette was at the top of their list or not, because I don't consider the Kings' FO to be infallible authorities like some here apparently do. I'm only saying that post-draft quotes are useless and prove nothing, and like you pointed out, pre-draft stuff is probably just as useless. That was my original point and I shouldn't have let myself get baited into debating it further.

Either way I don't care because I think the playing of the "well he's who the Kings wanted" card as an attempt to end the discussion is a cheap and cowardly move.

I think that Fredette is hands down a much better fit for the Kings than Walker. Knight vs Fredette is debatable but Walker and Tyreke in the backcourt with Cousins underneath isn't the best combo. It is interesting to me that the Kings liked Jimmer more than Knight since knight was such a hot topic in all of the mock drafts. I think the Kings must have really valued outside shooting and NBA readiness (and ticket sales) given their current lineup. I personally gave the draft an A- including the trade, they got Jimmer for less money than they would have with the 7th pick, they needed a starting SF which wasn't available in the draft so they got it via trade in John Salmons, and Honeycutt and Thomas were steals. It would have been an A+ if they would have gotten somebody better than Salmons, I think they addressed the right need but maybe could have gotten a little better player at SF for what they gave up.

So wait. If someone argues that Petrie screwed up royally because he blew a chance at Brandon Knight, the argument "Petrie didn't want Brandon Knight" is cheap and cowardly? Because that seems to be what's happened here.

Exactly what type of argument is non-cheap and non-cowardly to put up against the accusation that Petrie screwed up?

My guess is one that agrees with her.

LOL. It always cracks me up when people say, "Well that's your opinion." No kidding. Did they think I was plagarizing someone else's opinion.:D

I was wondering the same thing.

You are magnificently stubborn. I'm in awe.

I give it an A. I think Jimmer is the right player for the Kings at this time and they got some intriguing players in the second round two.
