George Maloof wants to start negotiating again?

Another salvo firing at the Maloofs:

Rob McAllister tweet:

This isn't going to end well for either the Maloofs or the city of Sac. I think things are kind of coming to an end here. Something's going to have to give. Lets hope it's the Maloofs, although I could see them just deciding to get real nasty and bring in more lawyers instead.

Three Possible Outcomes:

1. Sacramento wins and Maloofs sell team: the best outcome for us.
2. Maloofs win and allowed to relocate: Sucks to lose the team, but any team owned by these broke buffoons is going to suck anyway.
3. Maloofs renegotiate the deal and arena project proceeds: Just don't see this happening given the recent actions of the Maloofs and how broke they are. No money no talk.

I honestly think that #2 is the least likely scenario.

Whatever happens today, the Maloofs will have no qualms about lying to you about what really went down.

As far back as 2008, the Kings jettisoned the salary of productive players like Bibby, Salmons, and Artest to start a rebuild. That made sense. At the time, some fans were upset that the Kings didn’t get enough back for those players. Because the Maloofs were reportedly having money issues, it appeared the Kings might have been more interested in keeping the trades salary neutral or better as opposed to paying to extract young prospects or high picks. For example, I’d give you a good pick or a prospect for Bibby if you took bad a so-so contract with another year remaining, and you’d get less if I’m sending you expiring deals which hold value. (Subsequently, it became clear that since 2008 the Kings primary goal has been cost cutting and that’s often accomplished via trades.)

This is just context. My point is not to rehash what we got for those players or speculate whether we could have gotten more. Instead, the team had everybody on the local radio saying, that fans shouldn’t be disappointed the players were leaving or the abilities of a Sheldon Williams or Noc, because these salary dumps were going to lead to “pay roll flexibility” in both the summer of 2008 and 2009.

Don’t worry Kings fans, there is a plan. With the new salary relief, the Kings can take back more money in a trade.

After the Kings didn’t take on a big salary in a trade in 2008 or 2009 (which was the right move), fans were directed to turn their hopes and attention to the summer for 2010. This would be the first summer that the Kings had cap space and there would be a lot of very good free agents. Just wait until summer 2010 Kings fans.

And when the summer of 2010 passed without the Kings opening their wallet in a significant way, Peaches went to the microphone and told the public, “They need to wait for the new CBA which will be more beneficial to the small teams.” At the end of the 2010 season, the owners said on the radio they would systematically bid on every top free agent. New CBA passed. The Kings made a few offers, but even if Delambert or AK47 (no reason to believe they were willing to pay both) took a deal, they still would have been under the cap and among the lowest players in basketball.

At this point, the team isn’t even pretending that they intend to sign anybody significant in the future. And they are hiding behind the “We can’t get anybody to come to Sacramento. (Wonder who’s fault that is)” Perhaps when there is a new arena in 2015 or 2016 the team will spend.

For the past five years, they’ve kept payroll basically as low as possible for the team. For two years, fans were misled to believe might take on a big salary with a major trade. Then we were sold a big free agent signing 2010. And then the goalpost was moved until after the new CBA. This is what deadbeats do. They will always pay you tomorrow.

During that time, cut rate coaches failed to properly develop the talent on the roster.

As report after report stacked up, they told you that things were improving at the Palms. They said, thus it was so. So stop talking about them selling, right now the team isn't for sale.

On the arena, they’ve been floating along an interest only loan, while deferring or neglecting most of the maintenance of the place, knowing they have the legal right to dump the mess back onto the city if they don’t get everything they want in an arena deal.

The publicly liked the new arena deal, but allegedly disliked it behind close doors. Until they had to spend any money, then they publicly hated the deal but were still 100% committed to staying in Sacramento. At the same time, they are breaking their commitments to both the league office and the city and privately laying the ground for a lawsuit to leave town.

They are dishonest people, who have no trouble intentionally misleading you. Based upon the glaring facts above, they are banking on your blind loyalty to block out the obvious fact that their extreme penny pinching has done major damage to the team’s brand around the league, the roster, and the arena.

They put this team into the dumpster with several years of willful neglect. Now, you you need to patient and endure several more years of penny pinching because they’ve unforeseeably stumbled into a rough patch. Otherwise, they will have to leave, even though they really want to stay. Got it?

You can reply by quibbling over the compensation for one trade or pointing to some small move. The fact is the Maloofs have no qualms misleading you about their intentions or finances to keep you buying tickets as they work to leave town. Grant is either willfully blind or a willing conspirator.

There was a time when I would have gone toe to toe with you, arguing each point and defending the actions (or lack thereof) of the Maloofs. That time, however, has passed. Right now, I have more anger and resentment towards the Maloofs than I ever would have thought possible.

I can't wait to see that letter the Sacramento businessmen are sending to the NBA about this. I may be over an hour away from Sacramento, but I will make sure to support those businesses in any way I can.

.

Thanks for seeing my inherent point. In late 2009, I had a long post with the argument of "are we sure they aren't having money problems" And despite the steady stream of reports, it was tough for anybody making this point to fight through blatant lies with no logic lobbed out by the Kings pr machine.

A little over two years later, perhaps the biggest Kings optimist responds to a much weaker argument of "these guys are lairs and they've lived off you loyalty and faith for five years" with "I'm too angry and fed up with the owners to disagree". (And I'm not mocking you)

Beyond the money issue, that's why they can't stay owners here.

I'm sure the letter will be on point because think big is behind it, but when the Maloofs go a bridge too far for Vf21. That speaks volumes

I don't like to hate people, because I think it's wasted energy. But I would not have believed how utterly incensed I get at the mere mention of the Maloofs at this point. That's probably because I have, in the past, wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Well there is no more doubt on my part. I hate them. The mere whiff of anything Maloof these days has me seeing red.

And that's a problem. I don't think they will be forced by other owners to sell the team, but how do the Maloofs ever have a good relationship with the fans and City of Sacramento again? I don't trust blindly, but I don't think I will ever believe a word any of the Maloofs say ever again. As far as I'm concerned now, they are just snakes in the grass. Shame on me for being fooled by them way more than once. That was because my love for the Kings kept me blind far too long.

If there was anyway I could support my team without putting money into Maloof pockets, I would. I won't stop supporting the Kings, because I hate the Maloofs, but I will never again believe the Maloofs care at all about the team's fans or about Sacramento. (Note, I don't hate "ownership," because there are minority owners who have never wanted the team to move, but are stuck on the outside looking in, because they can do nothing to stop the Maloofs. They must be absolutely livid.

LONG LIVE THE SACRAMENTO KINGS. Down with Maloofs!!!

Agree with all of this. I can't stand those guys.

About the lack of spending, I am not going to deny that this may be the case but do you think that if top flight players were available in the past few free agency periods and wanted to come to Sacramento and the Kings had the flexibility to sign them that the Maloofs wouldn't spend on them? Is some of it circumstance or is it all Maloofs policy?

I followed along with the "just wait until.." up until this last off-season, when the moves made weren't indicative of spending to attract certain free agents, but were rather moved that looked like the plucking of low-hanging fruit.

I think you have to overspend to get that first quality FA to come to Sacramento. Once you get one player on board, it's a lot easier to get two. I think really that's all we need. We should have made that overture (monetarily) to AK47 (for example) to show that we were willing to spend - it sends the right message to fans, and more importantly, other players who may be free agents in the future. That kind of effort, does a lot more in the long-term, and says that they're interested in building a winner in Sacramento, as opposed to sending the message that they're doing things on the cheap in order to make a move as easy as possible. It's all related.

I don't think the Kings have made any legit offers to top free agents in a long time... that leads me to believe that they are not planning on spending. They may not choose to come here after all, but at least make an attempt, put a competing offer out there and show you're in the market.

Every time I see the title of this thread, I can't help thinking 'George Maloof can negotiate with Dees N-U-T-S'.

Funny how this is coming to loggerheads while the Oakland A's are in the news for their woeful attendance. Oakland's owners have traded away all of their talent. They play in a miserable stadium which they have stopped maintaining. There are speakers out, broken seats, and horrible bathrooms that havent been updated since ive been attending games at the coliseum. I wonder if something like that could happen here if the maloofs keep the team and the league forces them to stay here? Do the least amount possible and ultimately force the league to let them relocate.

I take solace in the Maloofs, their lies, equivocation, and lack of credibility. After all, they've told us many times they would not sell. They would not sell. Well, like everything else they said, I hope this is the biggest untruth of all.

Agreed. And while a house, for instance, may not be for sale, when it is foreclosed upon you still lose it. I am hoping for something similar at some point soon.

On top of that some of the spending doesn't make sense (picking up Salmons at $7+ mil until 2015, Outlaw at $3+ mil until 2015). I guess that is more on Petrie than the Maloofs though.

And everything is for sale is the price is right. I firmly believe there is a number that, if seen on a check made payable to the Maloofs, would have them out of town in a heartbeat.
