I was worried for both, Gay once I heard Achilles i just though of Kobe, was watching that one live, good thing is Rudy was able to give it a go and was walking back to the lockerroom, Kobe baby stepped off the court. Cousins was a standard ankle sprain, but that is a bunch of girth going down on that ankle, hopefully his thick legs help him here and its a quick recovery.

Rudy continued to play before limping off the court and directly into the tunnel after about two minutes. It didn't really show his injury.

DMC rolled his ankle. It looked as yucky as all ankle rolls look. He had to be helped from the court. The Kings old media relations guy, Devin Blankenship, tweeted that he wasn't too worried for the simple reason he had seen DMC do that in practice, look really bad and then be fine the next day.

Gay got hurt landing off a jumper and he felt lingering pain trotting back down the floor, he tried to play, but was clearly in pain, walked to the back without assistance. Cousins couldn't put weight on his ankle, and it looked like a "medium sized ankle sprain", it was bad, but i have seen worse. Also I can't think of a time Cousins sprained an ankle so he was probably expecting to just jump back up and looked to be in a little panic when he realized "holy crap i cant even put weight on it". Shows you his fighting spirt.

No. See VF21. If what I saw was Gay's injury, it was the slightest of strains on his Achilles and I guess that shows how easy it is to really hurt yourself as this didn't appear to be a big deal.

Gay's injury didn't appear serious at the time it happened. He was grimacing but tried to play through. Ultimately he was unsuccessful.

Cousins though...that looked bad at first. Seeing our star big man lying under the basket, unable to get up, brought back some bad memories from that game in Dallas.

Does anyone know if Kings players or in the NBA in general, do players have to get there ankles tapped as a rule or not? I know it does not stop ankle sprains but it does limit them in some way.

Mild, moderate and severe are relative terms. Sprains and strains are usually described as grade I, II, or III. If a guy is carried off it is probably a II or III. Bad ankle sprains can be debilitating for 3-4 weeks or more. Sometimes the injury site is black, blue and yellow after 3 weeks. Anything with the word Achilles in it deserves careful consideration. Coming back too soon from those injuries is a sin.

People that have played basketball know all about these type of injuries. Some players, even big, strong ones over-react when they get hurt. Some guys do not show much. It can be deceiving and only time will tell. Having even one of those two back would make a big difference.

I was quite depressed when I went to bed last night thinking we had lost 2 of our big 3 for substantial time. Especially as the Kings have been playing better basket ball as of late. But hopefully the injuries are of the garden variety and will not require many games missed to recover. We should know more later today I suspect.

Yeah, I turned off the game late in the fourth thinking that we were about to witness a tank-tacular finish to this season. If Gay & Cousins were out for weeks or months you'd see a lot of guys get big minutes and raise their trade value for deadline deals while the losses piled up increasing the number of lottery balls. Not a bad way to ultimately improve the team (assuming Gay and Cuz fully recovered in the long term) but man it would be really difficult to watch.

I'd much prefer to see better basketball with Gay & Cousins back than endure another pitiful season hoping for salvation from the lottery.

I think this is accurate. The achilles is a whole different animal than the ligaments in an ankle. Any ligament for that matter. For one thing, you can't tape an achilles and get someone back in action without waiting for complete healing. As a matter of medicine, any strain, sprain, break, and even any of he "itis" groups of injuries involve a certain amount of damage/tearing. The reason that is important is that the healing tends to take the same amount of time to get 100% healed. Some people find that hard to understand. I don't know what the standard time is with modern treatments, etc. but 4-6 weeks sounds about right. Then there is the rehabilitation time if the healing requires non-use (is that a word?) of the injured item and resultant loss of muscle strength. It appears from what we all saw that Rudy didn't have an injury that would require surgery but we would all best be served if we wait for an official report. It requires rest and I suspect it requires enough rest to be 100% healed. See above for time span. Rushing Rudy back risks further injury and that doesn't do anyone who loves this team any good. We know what we have in Rudy and I like what it is.

Now let's see if I am correct.

They need to take their times coming back and make sure they are 100 for the good of the franchise. No harm in getting a look at other guys while losses help. Dwill and Acy I think will showcase themselves in particular

We were always one injury to any of the big 3 from life being very difficult. Two at a time just isn't fair.

We are suddenly are one of the very worst teams in the league minus Rudy and Cuz. We will see what happens while they are out, but we certainly no longer can compete with any team on any given night without them.

i think Cuz will miss a couple games at least. probably 3-5. But Rudy's is more up in the air. it could be a game or two, or a month or two. Lets hope for the best!

Kings Injury Update
SACRAMENTO, CA –Kings center DeMarcus Cousins and forward Rudy Gay, both injured during the first half of last night’s contest against the Houston Rockets, were examined today in Sacramento at Kaiser Permanente by Dr. Jason Zemanovic.

Cousins was diagnosed with a sprained left ankle and is currently listed as day-to-day. He is averaging a team-leading 22.6 points (.488 FG%, .721 FT%), a team-high 11.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.78 steals, 1.20 blocks and 32.0 minutes per game in starting all 40 games he has played in.

Additionally, an MRI examination on Gay was negative and he is also listed as day-to-day with a left Achilles strain.

Gay has accrued averages of 20.1 points (.523 FG%, .370 3pt%, .853 FT%), 4.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.14 steals, 0.71 blocks and 34.1 minutes per contest in 21 games with Sacramento since being acquired from the Raptors on December 9.

Is anyone afraid that Rudy will be treated by one of those spooky doctors that introduces the injury report. I too am interested how the Kings handle these two problems. I have no doubts that both players want to play. I doubt that Boogie would worsen his injury by playing. Does anyone know the risk of playing on an achilles tendon that still has pain? I can't find anything.

Here's the one statement that grabbed my attention:

Then there is a whole list of measures to be taken that I presume most people would not find surprising. I find it hard to believe that Rudy could be pain free in 3-5 days but then re-evaluating in that time is a good idea.

And, yes, folks, fatigue can lead to an achilles injury among many other things. I suspect this will be the last time Malone asks a player to play a huge amount of minutes simply for an ego thing. Makes me wonder about the risks to IT.
