Gary Payton?

The thing with Payton is that he is hardly a spot-up shooter as much as he is a driver (not as effective at it as he used to be). Plus, last year shows how much he hates any kind of a limited role. In other words, he wouldn't be too happy with the King's Princeton offense. He is most comfortable when he has a lot of plays called for him and he can post on other point gaurds. Basically, even if he wanted to play and didn't complain (extremly unlikely), he just wouldn't fit into the Kings system.

No way! Did you see the comments from his teammates when he was finally traded from Seattle? They were diplomatic - but just barely. Rashard Lewis was quite happy he was gone. And they're really good this year without him.

Not bad!

Wait till Phoenix gets Payton, and all of you would say, "wish the Kings got him first"......

JJ and Payton in the Suns will really improve their bench.

I think I would rather have an athletic pf who can rebound and protect the basket for a few minutes a game. Payton won't accept a limited role. I think the back court as it stands right now is fine as long as Evans comes back soon. The front court needs someone, anyone, that can defend the quick forwards that take Webber off the dribble. Gotta love Songaila, but he isn't much better at defending these guys either.

If the deal coud be done it would worth picking up Payton just to keep him off the Suns roster. If he causes any trouble stash him on the IR.

haha :) I just dont like GP.

Never have since he entered the league. But he is a possible hall of famer can't knock him for that

Why does Boston want to get rid of Gary?

Just have no use for him -- they are more or less rebuilding, and he is a 37 yr old PG. Just trying to get something for him rather than letting him go for free, which they certainly will. Of course that was why Ainge's brillaint morve to get him in the first place was so ridiculous -- don't you think they might just be a tad better off with Mihm at this point?

Actually Payton has been a solid citizen for them up there. May be mellowing a bit with age and the realization that he ain't all that anymore.

ok i am all for trying to get Something, but a First Round pick (no way) hell send them barnes and house for the oven mitt

I'm all for it but I don't think the Kings could make it work financially. Payton makes about 5 million and to make the trade work you would have to throw the Big O or Bobby Jackson into the deal and I don't see why Boston would do this. Even though Jackson is hurt he can still be traded.

Another article today has Payton saying he thinks he is going to be traded to either Minnesota or Sacramento. Doubtful Phoenix gets him because they just don't have the contracs to send back to Boston.

Here's the blurb from the Globe:

"As far the NBA's worst kept trade secret, point guard Gary Payton figures he'll be on the move to another team in the next few weeks. He thinks the potential suitors are Sacramento and Minnesota"

Hmmm

Scenerio:

Ref makes a bad call, while the other team is running down the court on a fast break Gary and Brad are both still on the other side of the court argueing with the Ref.

I will pass on Gary, he is a punk and he complains constantly while on the court...

I did some checking and the Kings do have 2 trade exceptions available....one for about $920,000 and the other for about 1.7 Million so they could package Bobby with the larger one and trade for Payton........Boy, I would hate to see the people complain if that one ever went through :p

I think Payton would do well. He would be close to home and the Kings offense is suited to his type of play. I think he really hated playing for the Lakers last year and it showed on the court. I like his fire and he would be an excellent back up for Bibby.

Better than Eddie House!!!!!

Where did you find that info? I'm pretty sure the big trade exception we had expired in September.

Payton has put up pretty decent numbers this year in Boston and if he is willing to come off the bench then why not take the risk on him. He's shooting 46% from the field and his turnover/assist ratio is 3-1 and he still averages a steal or so a game. It's not as if the Kings are building for the future...the time to win is now and IMO if GP can help them win now then go get him. Not only would he be a much better backup to Bibby than anyone on the roster now...what would happy if Bibby went down with an injury? I wouldn't feel that comfortable with E House running the show. As far as his salary goes I belive that the Kings would only be on the hook for half of his salary. He makes 5.4 mill this year.

This is out of todays Boston Globe.....

All the way down, youll see this quote:

"I'm excited about [the trade]," said McCarty. "I'm not trying to get too excited because it could fall through. It's a great opportunity. So, we'll just see if it happens." As far the NBA's worst kept trade secret, point guard Gary Payton figures he'll be on the move to another team in the next few weeks. He thinks the potential suitors are Sacramento and Minnesota.

Apparently we need a PG backup to Bibby, and he's hungry for a championship. If his mom has cancer, what a better gift for her than a ring. I think GP will give it his all if he plays for the Kings IMHO.

Payton off the bench would be a considerably better player and probably a better defender too. If he is allowed to dominate the ball off the bench the way Bobby was allowed to when he was healthy, I think he'd be a great fit.

Gary Payton is good for one thing. TALKING TRASH!!!!!! he hasnt been good since early in his career! Let Phoenix take him!

While I wouldn't be opposed to having Payton come off the bench for a championship run, the cost might be steeper than we think. The trade below works, but we'd be giving up Bobby Jackson (sorry, I can't see giving up Ostertag). The question is, why would Boston want to do it?

self.focus();
Boston trades: PG Gary Payton(12.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 6.2 apg in 33.0 minutes) Boston receives: SF Erik Daniels(0.6 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 0.2 apg in 4.0 minutes) PG Eddie House(7.0 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 1.5 apg in 16.4 minutes) SF Matt Barnes(3.1 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.0 apg in 11.5 minutes) PF Michael Bradley(1.1 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 0.3 apg in 6.2 minutes) PG Bobby Jackson(11.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.3 apg in 21.7 minutes) Change in team outlook: +11.5 ppg, +6.8 rpg, and -0.9 apg.
Sacramento trades: SF Erik Daniels(0.6 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 0.2 apg in 4.0 minutes) PG Eddie House(7.0 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 1.5 apg in 16.4 minutes) SF Matt Barnes(3.1 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.0 apg in 11.5 minutes) PF Michael Bradley(1.1 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 0.3 apg in 6.2 minutes) PG Bobby Jackson(11.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.3 apg in 21.7 minutes) Sacramento receives: PG Gary Payton(12.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 6.2 apg in 33.0 minutes) Change in team outlook: -11.5 ppg, -6.8 rpg, and +0.9 apg.TRADE ACCEPTED

Due to Boston and Sacramento being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Boston and Sacramento had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

I have to say that this could be good for the Kings plans. Not only that but it's another expiring contract and it looks like Petrie and company are trying anything they can to sign Peja to a max deal.

I'd say give up Bobby b/c I think in the end he is going to have to go if they sign Peja to a max deal. I would really miss BoJax and hope something happens to where he stays in Sactown, but reality says....

I would hate to see Otag go so that better not happen. Its nice to have at least one guy that can defend the paint.
