Favorite Reality Shows...

#1
As you all have probably all figured out, I'm a huge TV fan. So, here's another installment of my favorite TV series...this time focusing on reality shows. Here are my favorites and as always...feel free to add your favorites that I don't mention.

1. Survivor - The original is always the best!

2. Flavor Of Love - That spit last season and the reunion show was classic!

3. Hogan Knows Best - More of a cult following show, but I can't get enough of it!

4. Fear Factor - Another classic show. Thanks to that show, fraternity dares aren't considered as extreme anymore.

5. The Bachelor - I've only watched one season of this show, but the concept is every single man's dream...20 women all fighting over you! That'd be awesome!

I'm sure many will say "The Apprentice" deserves votes as well...but with all due respect, I'm just not a fan...sorry.

Mine:

Big Brother - What can I say? A true classic.
Project Runway - Wannabe designers shredded by Heidi Klum and co.
Survivor - Again, a classic.
Top Chef - People with sharp knives vying for top honors.
Project Greenlight - Watch a wannabe film director learn how hard it really is.
Nashville Star - Hey, I like country music and this show brings real talent.
Dancing with the Stars - Jerry Rice learning to tango? Oh, yeah!
Last Comic Standing - Some incredible talent.
Amazing Race - If nothing else, the scenery is great!

Needless to say, I'm a bit of a reality-show junkie.

Honorable mention: Miami Ink. Some of the tattoos they do are beyond amazing.

Every time somebody starts up a new version of this thread, I find myself with a longer list of crap reality shows that I'm hooked on... don't know what that means.

In no particular order:

1. America's Next Top Model
2. Project Runway
3. Miami Ink
4. Flavor of Love
5. Workout

hmmm I like a lot of them so just gonna do a top 5. There is a new one that moved into the fray for me this year.

Tie: 1. Survivor
Tie: 1. Amazing Race
3. Big Brother
4. Apprentice (this is dropping quick)
5. Treasure Hunters (since this was only the first season could not rank it higher in the top 5 but I like they way they actually solve clues vs just going to a place)

OH and for those that do not read BBU - Apparently Will and a partner (I am assuming Boogie) have a deal to be on Amazing Race if they do well in BB, which they have. Will has been talking about this a lot over the past week or so.

I wish they still had that ESPN host show...

And someone said original :)... I believe Real World was the real start of it all.

You mean "Dream Job"? I believe Kara Lawson of the Sacramento Monarchs was part of that show.

Actually, the grand-daddy of the modern-day reality shows is a documentary miniseries (10 episodes) on PBS back in 1973, called "An American Family". A camera crew spent several months living in a family house. The crew traveled nearly everywhere with the family members. Eventually, the teenage son (Lance Loud) came out of the closet, and the couple got an on-air divorce.

Ten years later, in 1983, PBS did a sequel called "An American Family Revisited".

Lance, who had been a crystal meth addict, died of Hepatitis C in 2001.

I really enjoyed the first seasons of Contender and Rock Star but the recent seasons have let me down. Top Chef was great, Project Runway is pretty cool. I watch the Great Biker Build Off from time to time. Otherwise I'm not really huge on the other competitive reality shows.

Miami Ink is pretty cool although I find a lot of the tattoos that make good subject matter for the show to be kind of boring for my tastes. Its still light years better than Inked which is horrible.

I'm into cars and bikes so I occasionally can stomach the American Hot Rod and Chopper shows. I am not a fan of either company though. American Casino was really cool as I had done some work for the Stations Casinos years ago and recognized a few faces on that one.

I'm sure there are a few others I watch and maybe even like. The scary thing is I was prepared to come into this thread and say I hate reality tv...

One reality show I used to absolutely love but can't stand at all now is Survivor. Used to so look forward to watching that one every week. But then I just got tired of it because IMHO-it's a bunch of adults acting like tweens at a summer camp with their silly cliques, lies, alliances, etc. That aspect of it just seemed to get progressively worse with each coming season. I still like watching the re-runs from the first couple seasons, but that's it.

To add to my own list...

"Mythbusters" is solid!

"Knight School" with Bobby Knight was great!

"Dream Job" I'd have to agree with as well considering to work at ESPN is really my dream job!

I'll also give a shout-out to "The Contender" even though I'm not much of a boxing fan.

Big Brother - Started watching right before season 5 at the urging of a friend of mine. She insisted I watch. Been stuck on stupid with it ever since. (I think these shows are stupid but I'm watching)

What I saw of this was quite alright. I just have to wonder if it was as fake as the high school football reality show ESPN ran with Dick Butkis (which I found to be quite enjoyable until learning the backstory).

Does Mythbusters count? If so, add Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs for me.

I have to second all the Discovery shows, American Chopper, Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs - before it ended Monster House and Garage.

StevenHW: You broke out some history on me. :) I was only 1 in 1973, sounds like an interesting show tho.

Pretty good list VF...especially the first 4.
I almost forgot about Miami Ink...inspired me to get some additions myself. I love Kat von D's work. A friend of mine was going to get one from her when she was working in LA, but then she had to go and move to Miami for the show.
