Spurs In The Hunt For Pryzbilla
Jul 3 - Joel Przybilla's agent, Bill Duffy, told the San Antonio Express-News Saturday that the Spurs are among the teams the free-agent center is considering. "He's wide open," Duffy said. "Nothing has been looked at too closely yet, but he certainly has a lot of respect for the Spurs."
On Saturday Pryzbilla told The Oregonian that he is "torn" on what he will do.
"It's a tough decision, and already it has been very stressful," Przybilla said. "I don't know if I'm excited or scared."
The newspaper reports his decision comes down to money and the opportunity to play for a better team than the Blazers.

Hot For Bonzi
Jul 3 - The Sacramento Bee reports two days into negotiations, the Kings have plenty of competition for Bonzi Wells. His agent, William Phillips, told the newspaper he already has received six offers, including one made by the Kings on Saturday that is believed to be for more than the $5 million midlevel exception. According to the newspaper, Phillips has made a counteroffer and is waiting to hear back from Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie. The Detroit Free Press reports Wells is high on the Pistons' summer shopping list.
The Rocky Mountain News reports the Nuggets are courting Wells, but Phillips said the Nuggets likely would need to do a sign-and-trade for him.

Pistons Offer Irks Wallace
Jul 3 - The Detroit Free Press reports the Pistons have offered a four-year deal worth approximately $48 million to free agent Ben Walllace, while the Chicago Bulls have started bidding at closer to $52 million for four seasons. According to The Detroit News, negotiations between Wallace and the Pistons have gotten off to a rough start.
"It was disappointing," he told the newspaper. "It was not at all what I expected."

I think they're rehashing the Detroit stuff, and are late in reporting the Denver news. Either that, or it was put up as those stories came out, but was posted here late.

This really is being discussed else where so I am going to close the thread.

Eh, on second thought it's a new article with the same info so I'll leave it open but if one of the other mods wants to close it I would agree it is redundant.

Figured that most people don't have access to Insider, so thought I'd share...

just got this from anther board.
pacers offered bonzi 5yr 35mil contract

Er...they can't do that sans a sign and trade. I suppose they could say they'd be willing to go that high in an S&T deal, but there are only a handful of teams out there with the cap room to offer him a contract for more than the MLE (about 5 a year) and the Pacers ain't one of them.

Thats about the max I would have given bonzi.. If they offer 7mil/yr let them have him.

^Luckily for the Kings it's not a matter of worth but what the market will bear. And so far the indications are the market for Bonzi is in the Kings' favor, and we should be able to sign him to a reasonable deal.

Kings also have the distinct advantage of using a 6th year to beat other teams toatal offer. Its a risk comiting to a guy for that long but may well be necessary to hold on to Bonzi. After all it's not his his trade value is likely to drop much at least not right away.

I don't think there's any need to bid against ourselves and offer six years. Right now no one is offering more than the MLE and none of the teams with cap space seem ready to swoop in and outbid us.

Well as Brick pointed out not too many teams can go above the MLE but a few could and might. Kings can go over the MLE and have, but there is a point where they may want to retain some flexablity AND they still need to deal with the big hole up front and thin bu at point so it might make sense to use the 6th year to create flexablity for this year and since no other team can go beyond 5 years it is the Kings best advantage in trying to retain Bonzi's services.

Speedy Claxton is worth $6 mil a year. Peja is apparently worth $12.8mil/yr. Bonzi's worth more than $7 mil/yr.

As a player I'm not saying he isn't worth 7mil/yr, but I believe that at 7/mil a year + the stunting of K-Marts growth is too much to put on the line for an aging SG.

The Pacers (or any other team) CAN offer a deal like that to Bonzi.

The MLE for this season (which was originally set at $5 million but would increase to the average NBA salary) is estimated to be about $5.4 million. With the 10% raises (the maximum for an MLE deal) that would work out to 5 years and approximately $33 million. If the MLE is set slightly higher (say 5.6 or 5.7 million) then such a deal would be worth $34 or $35 million.

The idea that the Kings could offer 5 years/$30 million and outbid all the capped out teams isn't right. 5 years at $36-$40 million is probably what it will require.

It wouldn't hinder Kevin's development, Bonzi would start for 2-3 more years, Kevin would still get time. Then Kevin could start as Bonzi wants to play less.

Kevin wouldn't be put in front of Bonzi Wells until around then or so, I think.

So, agree to disagree then.

Bonzi wanting less minutes is an oxymoron.

It's not that K-Mart won't get minutes, its that Garcia and Douby will get very few, if any.

Later on in his career though, he wouldn't be able to play as many minutes.

Garcia could well be dealt in a deal. Douby, once again, his role/spot in the rotation isn't clear yet and will be determined by pre-season.

I like Garcia more, he can play 3 positions and provide good all-round play at just a fraction of the cost of Bonzi. Deal Bonzi. I'd also like to see what we got in Douby. He has a lot of potential I think.

^^^^ Thank you. I would rather develop our young guys than sign Wells. All signing Wells would do is screw up K-Marts minutes and move Garcia further down the bench. sheesh! I know it's Monday but come on!! :P

I think if we were to let Bonzi walk, and develop what we have (we have a decent core of guys so we will not be a 30 win team) a lot of people will be pleasantly suprised.

Signing a guy like Wells is what teams that are contending for a championship that very year do. Not teams that are trying to develop thair talent.

I don't see how letting talent walk away for nothing can be a good thing. If we want to develop the young players, we can always make room and use bonzi as a piece to trade for a useful big guy or something.

I'd prefer a S&T. But f he walks, I wouldn't call it a good thing, but it's kind of neutral IMO. We have 3 younger SG's that can now showcase their talents. Maybe they will surprise people. It's possible that K-Mart could outperform Bonzi next year if he improves as much as he did last year. If he walks, I would also expect us to use the MLE, I don't see us using it if Bonzi stays. The Maloofs don't want to pay the luxury tax, and rightfully so. When we are closer to the title, then the Maloofs will probably spend more.

I'd hate to see Bonzi go, simply because without him we'll drop back to being an even more subpar rebound team (depending on what we do on the big-man front too of course).

We all want to see Kevin develop, but he'll never be able to be the beast Bonzi is on the boards or give our team the toughness we have when both Ron and Bonzi are out there together.

I'm torn... :)

IMO we have to sign Bonzi, even if it's just a S&T. I mean almost all the good FA's are gone anyway so we're not going to get someone good with the MLE. Only guy left we should try for is Przybilla and there are other places that make more sense for him. Also why would he want to come here if we let Bonzi go for nothing? He wants to be on a winner.

Agreed. But he said he is torn in his decision. He knows that if we keep Bonzi then we can compete with a guy like him. Our guys made a great comeback run since getting Artest and every player knows it. He knows that if sacrifices a little it can go a long way, but I think he will take the money somewhere else. What we can hope for is a team signs him and makes a trade with us.
