EAST ALL-STAR RESERVES REVEALED
By PETER VECSEY

February 9, 2006 -- The Nets' Vince Carter and four Pistons are among the seven Eastern All-Star reserves to be officially announced today, The Post has learned.

But in a huge surprise, the Wizards' Gilbert Arenas, the fifth-leading scorer in the league, was left off the reserve squad in voting by Eastern coaches.

That could be remedied, however, when Commissioner David Stern personally selects the replacement for injured starter Jermaine O'Neal of the Pacers.

Carter joins Pistons Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton as reserves.

Tayshaun Prince is the only Piston starter not selected.

Also on the East's reserve squad are two surprises, from struggling teams — Paul Pierce of the Celtics and Chris Bosh of the Raptors.

Besides O'Neal, fans voted as East starters: Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade of the Heat, LeBron James of the Cavs and Allen Iverson of the Sixers.

The West starters are Houston's Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, Tim Duncan of the Spurs and Steve Nash of the Suns.

The West reserves were not available.

Yeah, I think they all deserve it, too. Pistons have played well this season aside from the last few losses.

Shouldn't Webber be on the team? I guess his shooting %s aren't great, but other than Jermaine and Sheed, he's easily the 3rd best PF in the West. The team isn't doing great but the Raptors and Celtics are much worse. Guess I'm still a Webber homer but he should have goot some consideration.

I don't like that at all actually. All Star games are kind of a joke anyway, but this really makes a mockery of them. Let's just take the whole Pistons team because they are doing so great and we all want to bask in their glory is more than a little ridiculous. Chauncey this year, sure. Ben sure. The rest of the guys are NOT better than the other guys they are competing with. This is just tokenism run rampant. Its like Joe Torre wanting to fill the Baseball All-Star game with 10 Yankees because hey, we're cool.

Doesn't make sense. I understand that the Pistons have the best record in the league, but how do they get 4 in the ASG, while the Mavs only get one. (not that I really care about the Mavs, but rather the logic)

What? No Webber? But we would be undefeated if we still had him!

Well, this doesn't surprise me too much with the Pistons... but three of them are suitable and technically do deserve it. While 'Sheed is very good and fun, I don't know, but it's cool to see him on there anyways. I expected at least two of them to make it, so should've anyone else.

Great to see Bosh make it, he's been so good whenever I've watched the Raps. Though I'm surprised no Dwight Howard - yet. He or Webber replaces JO? I'd hope so!

Well, only b/c PF is so weak in the west, he's easily not a top 5 PF anymore.

PF position isn't weak in either conference.

In comparison to the West, yes it is.

Good PFs in the West:

KG
Duncan
Amare (Marion which ever you choose)
Dirk
Gasol
Brand

Decent PFs

K-Mart
SAR
Randolph
West

Great PFs in the East

Jermaine
Howard

Decent PFs

Wallace
Webber
Haslem/Walker (not really actually)
Jamison (I guess)
Okafor

Still there is disparity, the cream of the crop is in the west. Amare, Dirk, KG, and Duncan are easily better than JO lately.

Well, originally you didn't catergorize it like that. I was just talking about overall in weakness for both.

But as far as versus eachother? Yeah the west wins easily.

Also, you forgot Chris Bosh.

RCD, if not posted here, they'll be announced on TNT at 7PM EST.

Sorry didn't even read, I meant, the East. Yeah forgot Bosh too, he's easily a top 3 PF in the East.

All I was referring to is yes, Webber in the West is no All-Star PF, but due to a significantly worse representation in the East by PFs, he could definitely deserve a spot, although his knee needs a rest.

Oh my ... That's SO funny!

Dude, the horse is dead. The carcass was carried off eons ago to a rendering plant, where it was reduced fairly quickly to component parts. One part became paste and was shipped to kindergartens around the country, where young children are consuming it as always.

Look around on your play table. I'm sure it's there...

Don't they go by "guards" and "forwards" when picking so the p's and s's in front of either are irrelevant?

Wow, I just dont like thte fact 1/3 of the team is the Pistons. Even if they win a lot, there are other good players in the East as well. Dwight Howard is a guy that dereesreved it too and Jamison, and Redd were all good players that should of dereved it instead of lets say Rasheed and Hamilton.

This is stupid. Rasheed and Rip shouldn't be there, but because their team is so good they're there anyways. And if we're going by team success, Pierce and Bosh don't belong. Arenas/Redd got seriously snubbed. I also think Webber should've been there, oh well.

Yeah, those guys all got horribly robbed...Even with the Pistons' record, i dont think you can put in Rasheed instead of a monster player like Howard..

Gilbert Arenas got snubbed BIG TIME. How does a guy that averages over 28 ppg not go the All-Star game.

Arenas and Redd

I totally agree that Arenas and Redd were snubbed. I would replace Hamilton with Redd, as Redd can do a bit more (create his own shot, etc.). Arenas is certainly more deserving than Vince Carter. If team play counts (and it seems to, given the Pistons representation), consider that Arenas is helping to right the ship at the moment, while Carter is a good player on an underachieving team.

Great to see Bosh make it. Good point about Webber, but I think Howard needs a bit more offensive polish before he gets to be an also. It shouldn't take long, and it wouldn't surprise anyone if Howard makes it a dozen times before the end of his careet.

Gilbert Arenas, replaces JO:

Press Release - Washington Wizards forward Gilbert Arenas has been named by NBA Commissioner David Stern to replace injured East All-Star Jermaine O’Neal (torn left groin) of the Indiana Pacers on the Eastern Conference roster for the 2006 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 19 at Toyota Center in Houston.

Arenas, in his fifth NBA season, is making his second consecutive All-Star appearance. East All-Star head coach Flip Saunders will determine which player will replace O’Neal in the starting lineup.

Very good replacement, Arenas rocks.
