Draft Position Thread

Minnesota 23 42
Washington 23 43
Sacramento 23 44
Phoenix 23 45
Detroit 23 46
Cleveland 22 45
NO 22 46
Orlando 18 49
Charlotte 15 52

The 2 wins we grabbed recently on games we should have lost are kicking us in the butt. We would have been sole owner of the 3 spot, which would project to Noel/Mclemore/Smart/Porter. Instead, we are a win away from being 9th spot. As it is, we're looking to fight for lotto purgatory. Crappy enough to stay in the lotto, never taking enough to grab a difference maker. Sound familiar? Are those two wins worth trading one of the aforementioned players for Oladipo/Zeller/Len/Bennet?

There's a reason I voted "We blew our draft position!" on the Kings-Bulls grades thread.

I actually have Oladipo 3rd right now ahead of Smart and Porter and Zeller/Bennet have some question marks, but talent-wise there isn't a big gap between them and the top guys you listed. That's getting into specifics though. Third offers a better chance at a top 3 pick than 9th does theoretically, but if all these teams stay tied they're going to split the lotto balls evenly anyway. Given our luck in the past I'd just assume we're not moving up and get used to the idea of drafting a solid player rather than a potential star this year.

We should get Oladipo. Package Reke in a deal that gets us Trey Burke as well as a defensive Power Forward. Tank, and get us a 20-minus win coach for that purpose. Hopefully get picks #1 or 2. Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins.

A top 3 has a far greater shot at getting a quality starter than 7-9. Certainly worth 2 wins late into the season imo. Your rankings are your own and in this draft I don't think we're saying many different things. Outside of Mclemore, my tiers are influenced by positional need, which is why I put Oladipo in a lower category. A floor leader (or leader, for that matter) and a mobile interior defensive presence would go far in fixing our oddly put together team.

This season, Tyreke's done almost we've been clamoring for him to do on the offensive end. He's now a legitimate threat on spot up 3s, efficient inside, and contributing across the board. He's getting out of the way and not holding the ball as much. His numbers are great. I want to see what an actual system can do with Tyreke/DMC before I ship him off for an unknown.

I want to get him out so we can clear up our roster. Too many scorers. In the scenario I just drew up (and that's all it is, a scenario!) Wiggins/Parker comes in as the number one option on offense, which leaves little room for Reke.

You can't trade Tyreke now and just assume you'll somehow end up with Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker a year later. Our chances of drafting one of those guys are about as good as our chances of drafting Noel or McLemore this season -- maybe 5%. Tanking your entire franchise for a small shot at winning the lottery is what keeps teams like the Charlotte Bobcats at the bottom of the standings year after year with very little to show for it. We'd be better off keeping Tyreke and DeMarcus as our two scorers and looking for a complimentary defensive big and wing player right now, either in this draft or in free agency or via trade. Petrie has done all sorts of building since he drafted those two, he's just looking in the wrong directions. Get somebody who knows what they're doing in charge and we could be competitive again a lot sooner.

I have no problem with the logic. If you're shipping off people though, I'd rather MT/IT/Jimmer go first. If you have too many dishes on the table, you move the rolls, not the prime rib. MT/IT/Jimmer are off the bench scorers with limited skillsets. They are the dinner rolls. You can grab those anytime you want. Tyreke has underwhelmed, but his improvement this season is enough to make me want to wait before I move him. He has one elite skill, and tools for more elite skills. You don't throw that out just yet.
