Donte at PF??

Entity

Hall of Famer
Just wondering if anybody can explain to me why Donte hasn't gotten much time at the PF position this year. I thought this was going to be a major option coming into the season with our PF/C depth not what it should be. Donte has shown the ability to play defense on some of the best he is as tall as JT yet Noc get the PF min and Donte is playing alot of sg. I just didn't expect that. Just wondering if anybody has an explantion for this.

Coach forgets about poor Donte at times... But he's been playing major minutes at the 2 is the simple answer. He helps create mis-matches for tyreke with Kmart out. With Kmart returning he might see minutes at the 4 again...

I think he has played at PF a bit. I think Brockman may have taken some of those minutes leaving Greene to get his minutes elsewhere.

I know he has played PF a bit. Its just that he seems the obvious choice. I am just thinking it should be more min. I wouldn't mind a 4 mand rotation of Greene, Brock, Hawes, and JT. Then Casspi would get the bulk of the 3 min for now with Greene still getting a few spot min there as well. like this when Garcia gets back assuming Noc is traded.

Evans/Beno Evans 35min Beno 13min
Martin/Garcia/Beno Martin 35min Garcia 10min Beno 3min
Casspi/Garcia/Greene Casspi 25min Garcia 15min Greene 5min
JT/Greene/Brockman JT 32 min Greene 10min Brock 8min
Hawes/JT/Brockman Hawes 32min JT 10min Brock 8min

all min are subject to effectivness of course you don't leave JT or Hawes in there if they are 0-10 with 2 reb or Casspi if he is chucking 3's and going 0-5 same with Garcia/Martin

also according to hot streaks. i.e. if Beno comes in and goes 5-5 with 4 3's then he certainly don't get yanked out just to bring a starter back in.

Udoka spot min in special cases (possible trade)

DNP
Sergio (possble trade)
KT (possible trade)
May
Armstrong (unless he shows something) Then he can get foul trouble time.

Donte has actually impressed this year guarding SGs, not PFs. Putting him at PF squanders nearly every advantage he has. The only time I could see it instead of our normal rotation is in place of Noc, but I am assuming that there is a physicality and toughness factor there.

Donte needs to bulk up if he wants to play 4. Like Anothony Randolph, he is simply too skinny to be too effective defensively from the 4. Maybe he should stop giving Sean May his lunch money.

There is absolutely no reason to play Donte at the 4. He's a wing, bottom line. He creates matchup problems as either a sg or sf. Move him to pf, then we become the ones with a matchup problem. There isn't any part of Donte's game that makes me think he's a pf.

Plus, Donte has been pretty impressive guarding other sg's and sf's. Why would you want to play him out of position and take away every advantage he has? Donte can guard some pf's, but not on a regular basis, and its not his strength or the teams.

I don't understand it either, other than with Kevin out coach wants a big in the back court to make for matchup problems for the opposing team. Donte can post up on offense. He's a better shot blocker than either Jason or Hawes. If he put his mind to it he can be a very good rebounder. He's the best offensive rebounder this team has. Sure he can play power forward. Probably the only pfs he can't play against are very strong power guys and there aren't too many of them. Bottom line is he's a multiple position player. I just want him to get more pt. He hasn't even begun to touch his potential.

Im not interested in seeing donte play power forward ever. The only time id expect to see him at the 4 is when Armstrong is in the game.

Donte would be great filling in for JT since Martin is coming back.
Split the minutes since JT's production is down, let them fight for value then whoever loses include them in a trade with Martin to get what we really need. An all-star Center or high draft pick for this years draft. Lets face it we will not beat the lakers anytime soon in the Finals so lets get a couple more peices. If I were Geoff I would find a way to trade Martin and JT for the Nets first round pick or the other teams low in win % pick. We are missing a fresh BIG. It's obvious no team will trade there future all star centers. This is why it's so tough being a GM

Playing power forward isnt all about height you know. Greene simply isnt a power forward. Hes a tall wing player.

QFT.. Not sure why anyone would want to put him at PF.. Besides being 6'11 he has nothing to offer at that position.
I think the reason is pretty obvious however I think its a horrible idea.

Shotblocking. He's our most athletic player. And at that size you'd want him around the rim to make plays on the defensive end.

Nah.. He won't give us a power game like a PF is supposed to give us. He's a SF plain and simple, and that's where coach should play him. I can see coach putting him in at PF for a spell or something but not full time.

I agree, Donte has no business at PF
Play him at the position he is strongest SF!!!
He will have to battle with Noce for minutes in practice or on the court
Omri deserves the start at the 3, with Donte and Noce behind him

Kevin and Cisco can split the SG

Reke and Beno at PG

If you are going to play a SF out of position for a few Min, then use Noce
against smaller PF matchups

Jt,Spence, Brock and Maybe Hilton should be at 4,5

Wow an 11 man rotation? Kenny on the bench, I guess somebody will have to be inactive? Sorry Sean tag your it!

Well coach does a habit of using 9-10 players
But if I were to settle on 9 man rotation, Hilton and either Donte or Noce would sit
However Coach likes to insert players when performance suffers or for specific matchups
so coach has all sorts of flexability available

Nice problem to have

He gets his blocks on man to man defense, usually around 8-10 feet from the basket. He's can be a great perimeter defender, but won't solve our problems down low. Nobody currently on our team will at this point. We need to either acquire a defense big in a trade or sign a free agent this off season. Those two options are our only real solutions at this point.

In today's Sacramento Bee, they list Donte at the 4 in their Probable Starting Lineup (vs. Thaddeus Young).

I'm not sure how I feel about the way Coach Westphal constructs our starting lineup.

I know we are still searching for an identity and are missing a few key pieces, but it just seems like he plays right into the opponents hands sometimes. Most of the time, it results in us playing catch up early on.

Donte at the 4? JT at the 5?...
Neither one of these guys have had an impressive game when the majority of their minutes were at these positions. In my opinion, Westphal is doing both of these guys a disservice doing this.

To be honest, if we're experimenting at the starting power forward spot, I would really like to see Brockman in there. It seems to me hes completely unaware he's 6'7''. He is arguably our best rebounder since Bonzi wells. Not only that, he has a nice touch under the basket.

I don't know, aside from a few questionable late game calls this year, Westphal has impressed me. Maybe he sees something in practice that I don't.

I agree ^. I liked it earlier in the season when Westphaul was making substitutions in our favor. Lately, it seems he's trying to match up to the other teams line up and doesnt seem to be as successful. Brockman has been playing really well and Jason really bad. Brockman should start over Jason. Jason needs a wake up call just like Spencer needed one. In some situations its ok to put Donte at PF but he is best at the SF and SG positions.

That's fine because Young isn't a typical PF either.... I also wouldn't mind him matching up against Lewis. But for the most part I don't want to see him on Garnett, or Duncan or guys with their size and type of game.
