So who's going to make the desert island movie thread? I mean, it was mentioned and its a great idea. Would be nice to have two threads to lurk in while we wait.

edit: question about the rules here, is an album comprised completely of cover songs allowed? thanks

OK, my turn.

I have a couple I'd like to use, but I think I will start with (drum roll please):

Alanis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill

This was one of the first albums I think I ever heard that I just put the CD in and let it go in the car for weeks on end. The raw emotion on some of the songs just shines through. Lots of hits on the album, but pretty much every song was OK in my book. This pick was a challenge, because there are a couple others I feel similarly about, but I figured this might be the first one taken on that list given the habit of others here to pick rock albums. ;)

And I know I had no idea about this until others started discussing album sales in this thread, but according to wikipedia:

According to the RIAA, Jagged Little Pill is the best-selling international debut album by a female artist, with more than fourteen million copies sold in the U.S.; it sold thirty million worldwide, making it the second biggest selling album by a female artist, and the biggest selling debut album of all time, even though it was actually her third album.

I will tag the next in line.

That was on my list as well (major college + relationship angle for me with it too) -- but here is the most fun number about its sales: sold over 2 million albums in Canada (where she is from). Population of Canada? About 30 million. Meaning that potentially something like 1 out of every 15 canucks owns that album. You start narrowing things down, get rid of kids under 10, senior citizens for the most part...1 out of 10? Less?

The thing I remember the most about Jagged Little Pill was the allegations that a few of the songs, including the mega-hit You Oughta Know were written about Dave Coulier. I always thought that was a little creepy. Especially since at the time that album came out, Full House was still in heavy syndication and I considered myself a big fan of the show.

Did this get answered? I'm thinking as long as it is not a tribute album and it is by a single artist its all good. Consider that many artists outside of rock never write their own material.

I have one too: I know soundtracks are out, scores are in - what about soundtracks to musicals? I'm thinking in, but maybe I missed that?

I would think that musicals should be in, since they are comprised of original recordings made specifically for the show.

slim answered this in a PM from me, he said no. i figured it might though, since musical soundtracks are usually all original works...but i can't go against the commissioner. :p

but if the ruling changes...stay away from my musicals!!!

Disappointing about musicals... doesn't seem quite right, but the ramifications on this cover thing are HUGE.

I'm going with Stevie Nicks Bella Donna. I own a promotional copy of this album. I gotta go with Brick on if I'm stuck on an Island I want stuff I want to listen to and this is one of my guilty pleasures that I rarely listen to. Beside 3G stole my first pick.

From wikipedia:
Bella Donna is the debut solo album by American singer/songwriter and Fleetwood Mac vocalist Stevie Nicks. Released in July 1981, the album hit #1 on the U.S. Billboard charts in September of that year, remaining there for one week. Bella Donna was awarded Platinum status by the RIAA three months after its release on October 7, 1981, and has sold over 4 million copies in the U.S. by 2004. Worldwide, it remains her best-selling solo album to date.
The album spawned four substantial hit singles during 1981 and 1982: the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers-penned duet "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" (#3), the Don Henley duet "Leather and Lace" (#6), the iconic "Edge of Seventeen" (#11), and country-tinged "After the Glitter Fades" (#32).

This is likely the only album I will draft that is older than I am:

Imagine - John Lennon - 1971

Imagine and Jealous Guy are two of my all-time favorite songs. I cannot go more than a few weeks without listening to them. I can relate to both of those songs, having felt some of the emotions expressed. Imagine was my father's favorite song, and I heard it several times throughout my childhood. I wasn't able to fully appreciate it until I was in highschool. Everytime I hear it, it reminds me of my father and brings back warm memories.

Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison

Thankfully, the original release stuck to the main performance so as far as I can tell this is a legit pick.

If I'm going to be stuck on a desert island somewhere I am going to want a bunch of miserable murder ballads and prison tunes to keep me company during my darkest days, and these are the best there are. Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues, 25 Minutes to Go, Long Black Veil, Give My Love to Rose, I Got Stripes... I think I'll have my misery covered. The fact that June joins in to sing Jackson is icing on the cake.

I did not realize that I was anal enough to catch this.

Anyhow, I think it is cool that I get two picks in a row each time. That will affect my strategy.

nuh uh...I ain't getting hosed out of an album on a frozen ping pong ball...

:back to MBF's draft war room, readying to get on the hot phone to the commish for two consecutive picks before leaving on an around the world vacation in between next pick:

After further review, covers will be permitted, if for no other reason than because they are not expressly disallowed by the rules stated in the OP, as long as it can't be classified as a tribute album. For example, if Tony Bennett does an album where he does two Beatles songs, and two Sinatra songs, and an Elvis song, and a Dolly Parton song, that'd be a cover album, and would be allowed. If the Beatles did an album where the whole album is just Elvis songs, that's a tribute album, and won't be allowed. Standards are not considered covers because, in the days of standards, singers didn't write their own songs.

Additionally, it has been brought to my attention that nearly all musical soundtracks are written and/or performed by the same person/group. This would allow musical soundtracks to claim the same exemption as original score soundtracks.

I'll be honest, though: I'm confused by the confusion... I understand that I overturned something that I said earlier today, but that wasn't something that was actually covered in the OP. The rules themselves seem clear as day to me. Perhaps someone can point out to me where the ambiguity or confusion lies, because I'm just not seeing it.

Alright, like many others I'm going to have to pull a bit of strategy here. This album is not my favorite of all time (but definitely in my top 5), however I expect my top favorites to still be available for a while. That said, I feel it is far and away the best album by probably the best band ever.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is, in my opinion, the definitive Beatles album. It puts on its own show. Its not just an album of a few songs thrown onto a piece of vinyl its actually a trip through some sort of crazy music experience. Far better writes could explain this much more eloquently than I can, but thats the bes I can do. When the Beatles made this album they had just given up on touring and wanted an album that would "tour for them." In that, they definitely succeeded.

Throw in that it includes two of the best songs of all time, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and A Day in the Life, no filler, and one of the most kick *** covers ever and you have an album that could keep you content on a desert island at the very least until you're 64.

I can't recreate the mood of the times, but when this album first came out it was the first vinyl I owned that I actually had to replace because of excessive wear. And I wasn't the only one...

Hearing even the first few bars of any of the songs on this disc always brings back a flood of memories of times long past. The world back then was a very different place. The multitude of recordings being produced lessens the impact of any one record. Back then it was without equal and almost unbelievable in strength and influence.

I could not survive on a desert island - or anywhere else, for that matter - without a copy of The Doors.

For a variety of reasons, but basically because I've quickly realized I have no other viable choices that would even sound familiar to most of you, I've decided to cede my spot to Bozzwell. I think he'll be a valuable addition to the draft.

:)

Although I have no problem with a new member, I kind of can't wait until this gets past the Beatles, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Led, etc. and on to everyone's deeper personal tastes. No matter how out there they might be.

I think it will soon, the problem is many folks have albums of the more "popular" groups to get out of the way first, since they are favorites but are more likely to get snagged by others.

I, for one, will not be choosing any of the groups you mentioned because they are not something I grew up listening to or ever got into later in life. Frankly, I know of a few songs from each and wouldn't pick an album from any to be on my list. Just not a big enough influence for me personally.

I do have some other "big name" groups I want to choose from, but am still hopeful that some of these other mega-stars keep pulling votes to leave my choices alone. ;)
