Josh Groban - NOEL

more later, I'm one tired auntie..:D

edit: eventually it will be Christmas on my island. I want Christmas music and I want it sung by someone whose voice is just outstanding. If you haven't heard any of his music, I strongly suggest you add him to your list.

I almost feel that it would be easier to list whom I had heard of; like I said before, the only person in this draft whom I've heard of everybody on their list is... me...
I think only atxrocker has a list of artists i have entirely heard of.

Oh, and I'm 18. But I'm well versed in a lot of classic music (just look at my list) although I have turned my nose up to most 80's tunes.

I'm about double your age - I grew up in the 80's/90's, so that expains why you might not have heard of some of these groups....

Eh, I grew up in the eighties, and I more or less turned up my nose to the 80s, too.

I didn't get into music until I got out of high school, and I more or less completely disregarded most of the music from the eighties and nineties when I did.

Hit The Lights - This is a Stickup... Don't Make it a Murder - 2006

Catchy, upbeat, pop-punk. Similar to The Startine Line. Currently in my rotations at work and home.

My list of what I hadnt heard of, frankly I expected it to be longer.

Boogie Down Productions
Jean Michel Jarre
Southern Culture on the Skids
Single Gun Theory
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
The Rezillos
Kaiser Chiefs
The Fray

You've never heard of The Fray?? They're pretty much all I've heard on the radio the past year or so. They're ok

Some people don't listen to the radio. And, on the rare occasions that I do listen to FM radio, I don't ever listen to any station that would be likely to play The Fray.

Howe'er, comma, I'm ashamed to say that I have, in fact, heard of The Fray. Not because of radio or MTV, but because Gray's Anatomy (read: the women on Gray's Anatomy... well, two in particular) is my guilty pleasure.

You've heard of Hit The Lights? I was sure no one on this board had heard of them. Very interesting.

I must of missed that one when I made the list. I made it off the front page, but after checking on youtube, I'm pretty sure I've heard their stuff before. I have teenagers.

Edit - just for reference, C Diddy and tradepeja - are you guys young? Maybe that is why, as many of these groups are 80's/90's.

I'm 27. None of those groups sound even vaguely familiar, except maybe Parliament. I don't have a clear recollection of ever hearing about them so I listed them.

Sorry for the delay... waffled around on what I wanted to pick here and then got busy. Anyhow here goes:
Amazing Royal Crowns - Amazing Royal Crowns (1997)

I stumbled across the Crowns quite by accident in 1997, I heard them playing the Agent Orange classic "Bloodstains" and ventured nearer to see what was going on - found this band absolutely ripping up the stage and have been a fan ever since. This was also my introduction to the current version of the rockabilly-revival scene that I float in and out of.

This was their debut album and the only one released before the Royal Crown Revue sued them because their names were oh-so-confusing. While their live set was a mix of their original material along with punk influences this album sticks to straight up rockabilly with hints of the punk influence. Highlights here include the opening "Shiverin in the Corner", "Do the Devil", the Johnny Cash inspired "Rollercoaster" and "1965 GTO".

Sadly the Crowns would split in 2001. Their final show was available on the internet for years and they played nearly every song they had ever recorded or covered live that night. Had that been an official album I would probably have chosen it. Jason Kendall, their vocalist, would go on to become the lead guitar artist at Harmonix for the original Guitar Hero games and now also handles the tattoo art for Rock Band. I'm addicted to Rock Band and I don't think I would have ever touched the first Guitar Hero had I not known that he was involved.

I also gave this album to my wife when we first met, so it will have a special place on my island.

See, when someone says that they haven't heard of somebody on my list, my first thought isn't "how can you not have heard of Teddy Pendergrass?" My first thought is more along the lines of "Well, I guess he's not an R&B fan." I mean, I'm basically sticking to two genres (funk and R&B) for this entire draft, but I really don't do underground or alternative artists; everybody that I've picked to this point could be considered icons in their respective genres, with the marginally arguable exception of Erykah Badu. It's not possible to be an R&B fan and not have heard of Teddy Pendergrass, so I just figure that we don't listen to the same types of music, as is clearly reflected by the draft board.

There are groups that I would think everyone would have heard of no matter whether they listen to that music or not. I don't listen to any recent rap at all, but I have heard of most of the rap groups listed. I also don't listen to R&B, but I know of Erykah and Teddy. Some artists are well enough known that I would think everyone would have heard of them at some point.

No big deal, really, I was just surprised is all.

I'm liking this whole conversation. Slim's right, even some mainstays of certain genres can fly completely under the radar to people who don't listen to that genre. I don't know many of your R&B artists for the exact reason you stated, R&B isn't my favorite genre. Although, there are several mainstays of their genre that everyone knows. This reminds me of a funny anecdote:

"So I had to turn down a guy in a job interview today because he didn't know who the Beatles were."

"What? That's messed up, plenty of people don't know who The Beatles are."

"Dude, I work at a record store."

Alright, enough shenanigans. I don't expect many of you to know this band unless you're a psychedelic rock fan like myself.

Dandy Warhols - Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia - 2000

While my 1st pick in this draft is the pinnacle of psychadelic rock that will never be superceded, this album is a nice stab at the genre. The Dandy Warhols have made some of the best psych rock tracks since the inventor of the genre, the aforementioned Beatles. I'm not going to say they are as good a band, or as good as making songs that can transport you to another dimension with no chemical help, but they definitely try, and try pretty well.

Super trippy songs like "Sleep," "Godless," and "Nietzsche" can take you all over the world if you let them. Then there the more poppy and very listenable songs like "Solid" "Get Off" and "Cool Scene." Also, there is the only mainstream hit of the album "Bohemian Like You." I'm guessing a lot more of you have heard this song than you realize. Its been used in countless commercials (mostly for cars) and is just an extremely well made and catchy song. Listen to it on http://www.last.fm and see if I'm right about it.

Not a fan of the Dandys... [gafigan]hey they're from Portland! ... oh I hate the music here[/gafigan] but Dig! may just be one of the best rock and roll movies ever.

Joy Division - Closer (1980)

Down to last 6 pick, I don't think any of my remaining selections are under threat. I had a feeling I could get "Closer" at any time, I'll pick it here, but in reality it's more like my top-5 or at least top-10 album.

From wiki:

"Closer is the second and final album by post-punk band Joy Division, released July 18, 1980 (1980-07-18), two months following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. The album was originally scheduled to be released on May 8, 1980 (1980-05-08). The record was originally released on the Factory Records label as a 12" LP and reached #6 on the UK Albums Chart. It also peaked at #3 in New Zealand in September 1981. Closer, produced by Martin Hannett, has a sound which is both lusher and more sombre than Unknown Pleasures, with more use of synthesizers and studio effects. Many of its songs have a despairing, funereal feel, and its cover art appears to reflect this, although it was chosen by Peter Saville before he had heard any of the music; both the photo and the bleakness of the music and lyrics amplified the already strong mystique surrounding the album after Curtis's suicide.
The opening track, "Atrocity Exhibition", shares its name with The Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard, a book that Curtis read and loved, but only after writing the bulk of the song.
Closer has been highly acclaimed, making countless best-of lists; for example, it was ranked 10th on Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Albums of the 1980s and 72nd on NME's 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. It is often cited as being Joy Division's finest work."

My how time has flown, I still have not made a decision on the artist I was hung up on last time it was my turn.

Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man The Way I Loved You - 1967

Can't go wrong with the queen tho. I figured it was a sign of some sort as I flipped to an oldies station last night and the title track from this song was playing. I may add more later. I am too am still short on time.

Eric B & Rakim- Paid in Full 1987

Haha, goin back to some of my older roots here. This hip hop duo helped pioneer the genre and managed to get lots of notoriety even though they were before their time. Truly a classic, i'd feel stupid not taking this one with me. This is REAL hip hop at its best.
