Demarcus Cousins and other stats

Entity

Hall of Famer
Has anybody noticed the stats DMC is putting up in limited time because of fouls? he is top 5 in the league in rebounds per game and averages at least 6 less min than the 4 in front of him. He averages 12 less min than the top 2 rebounders. also getting almost 2 blocks a game. cousins per 48 is 26pt 20reb. Chuck Hayes also among the leaders in rebounds per game. Also John Salmons leads our team in 3pt% with Marcus not far behind him. As a team we are dead last in FT% and dead last in assist per game.

I have noticed. He will be a force for a long time.

Now the problems at the moment are that he is also shooting .349 and averaging 0.0 assists per game. He's dynamic as hell, but its all kinds of sloppy and selfish right now. That's a young player for you, but he needs to clean it up.

Yes, everyone knows of his talent. You'd hope he takes step this season towards refining his game, cutting down TOs and making better decisions. The whole team is disorganised right now so the blame isn't solely on DeMarcus. As well as that, 3 games is not a solid sample size so we'll have to wait a little longer to get a better perspective on his progress, and indeed the team's.

I think in every game I have said "they can't stop him." The problem is that he stops himself. :) He'll be fine. That workout schedule this summer has paid off with a more active Cuz and hence the rebounds and blocked shots. Now, of course he may fall on his face in those areas in the next 10 days but for a guy who was supposed to have an attitude problem, he sems driven to improve.

Now if he had a big guy next to him .................. He personally cannot be a shot blocker without being foul prone. He now is our last line of defense and that just is a waste.

Yeah. Hopefully he can cut down on some of those fouls and improve his body control and finesse (ie that one foul where he got the ball under the net, flailed his other hand, and almost hit someone and got called for a foul), and he'll be even more deadly.

I like that he hasn't been T'd up for arguing and seems to put things behind him a little quicker, but we'll see, there's a long way to go yet. But the only person stopping him so far is himself.

Just wanna point out - it's not all because of fouls.
DMC only played 14:49 in the 1st half last game - less than any other starter, and he only had 2 fouls AT HALF.
He was pulled by PW, for some inexplicable reason - DMC had been playing well.

I've noticed him repeatedly subbed out by PW this year NOT because of fouls.
DMC needs to be playing every minute he can be on the floor that he's not in foul trouble, IMO.
He's too good, and needs the experience and stamina-building too much to pull him when he's not in foul trouble, or being detrimental to the team.

.35% shooting should get anyone on the bench. Throw that stat on a center and he should get spanked to high hell.

DMC fouled out of this game.

Cousins and Hayes are leading the NBA in fouls per game, still early tough. DMC did lead the league in fouls last year though. Before Cousin's showed up and the team relied on Thompson, he placed third and second in the two years he was given large minutes. Going back a year before Thompson showed up, Mikki Moore lead the league in FPG.

Yes, congratulations - you read the boxscore.
I went out of my way to get my 1st half stat sheet that I get for every Kings game I go to, to make sure I was right about the 1st half stat I mentioned.

Do you want to respond to my post, or just obfuscate?

Cousins has been subbed out this season in at least 2/3rds of the games, NOT because he was tired, or bad-attitude, or in foul trouble, or was spectacularly sucking.

I feel that Cousins should be left on the floor AT ALL TIMES this season, unless one of those 4 conditions are met.

Most teams are finding it VERY hard to deal with him - the only way he doesn't make an impact on the court is if his coach takes him off of it.

What is wrong with you? I don't deserve this response.

Actually, you kinda did.

Don't be a jerk.

Adn as an aside, Cousins was pulled in the first quarter after going 0-5 with this being the final sequence:

7:01 DeMarcus Cousins misses 20-foot jumper
7:01 Carlos Boozer defensive rebound
6:54 Derrick Rose makes 21-foot two point shot
6:35 Marcus Thornton misses 17-foot jumper
6:35 DeMarcus Cousins offensive rebound
6:33 DeMarcus Cousins misses layup
6:31 Carlos Boozer defensive rebound
6:13 DeMarcus Cousins misses layup
6:13 DeMarcus Cousins offensive rebound
6:11 DeMarcus Cousins offensive rebound
6:11 DeMarcus Cousins misses layup

So basically missing 4 shots, including 3 layups, in 50 seconds with us struggling. Did he have to come out? No. But it wasn't a totally irrational decision. He was a little loose and frazzled.

And while I generally agree that Cousins needs to play every minute we can milk out of him, of course the obvious point can also be made that if he fouled out anyway, then the lack of first half minutes (actually got more than he did second half) did not cheat him of any minutes overall. If he's only going to give you 26 min a night, might as well try to make them minutes while he's going well.

All the more reason we needed to retain dally or someone similar. As predicted, Hayes isn't a team interior defender and it's creating a situation where we not only give up way too many points in the paint but also it leads to foul trouble for our bigs trying to protect the rim.

I am looking to get DMC AND Hayes on the floor more but their time is limited by fouls so far. They both are averaging 5 fouls a game. DMC is lasting 27 minutes and Hayes 30 minutes. It is simple to say something needs to be done about that and the matador defense is the easiest solution. Unless JT and JJ become adequate subs, and they should, we are in trouble. It'll be interesting tonight. I'm a little surprised at the number of fouls Hayes is picking up but when both are foul magnets, some creative substitutions are necessary to prevent having JJ and JT on the floor at the same time.

This fouling can't keep up, can it? Sigh!

While I was a big proponent of keeping Dally, Cousins was still a foul machine last year even when he played with Dally. Cousins needs to learn to play and not pick up stupid fouls.

Spencer Hawes season average: 11 (at 64% fg), 12.7 rebs, 4.7 assists, 2 blocks. Tonight he had 14/12, shooting 7/9 from the field.

Now if Hawesome can turn into a beast like this in his 4th year, imagine what Cuz will be down the line!

All these players flourishing outside of SAC just proves that something in the locker room is hopelessly broken.

Heehee. 14/12 shooting...OH SNAP! XD

Casspi is averaging a whopping 4 points a game so far. Beno, 9. On teh other hand, landry is averaging 17. i think it's more about fit and the player than something about Sacramento making players suck when they play here.

You get 6, and tonight Hayes didn't get into too much foul trouble. He is certainly getting gassed though, he's out of shape for sure.

Here is one of Cousin's many problems that I've noticed.

When he gets an offensive rebound, he ALWAYS forces a shot immediately afterward. It doesn't matter if he is triple teamed, he will always force up a shot and miss them at about an 80% clip. He needs to realize that it's not "me time" just because he gets the rebound. If he doesn't have a high percentage put back, he needs to kick the ball out and restart the offense (sorry..."pickup game street ball" as long as Westphal is here).

Cousins was playing that cog role tonight. He was working from the high post and having the guards split, move off him. It lead to some better shots.

His main problem is these weak shots at the rim. Since people mentioned Hawes, it is of note that he suffered from the same deal. Maybe Shareef is poisoning the well. =P

Cousins is getting decent looks. It's not so much going up soft he's just missing some.

Hawes was terrible last season. Maybe he is having a breakout year, which would be good for him, but I would be surprised if he kept it up.

That could be an important development, but only if we see a LOT more of it, right from the start of the game. We need to calm DeMarcus down by making him run a play, and calm everybody else donw by running a set offense. If the coach can't see that, he won't be here long.
