Five-year deal reportedly worth about $42 million

ESPN.com news services

Free agent Cuttino Mobley will play for the Los Angeles Clippers next season.

The shooting guard agreed to a multiyear offer, Andy Miller, his agent told the Los Angeles Times.

The contract is believed to be worth about $42 million over five years. It can't be signed until the free-agent signing period begins July 22.

Mobley played for the Sacramento Kings and Orlando Magic last season. He opted out of a $6.374 million player option that would have kept him in Sacramento.

Mobley averaged 17.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 43 games with Sacramento.

And so barring a lucky trade, the book is pretty much written on Cat's career as a career starter on a succession of bad/lottery teams. 42 million reasons why that's probably ok with him, but still would kind of be depressing (to me at least). Kind of embarrassing when it comes time to swap war stories with your NBA brethren -- I hit the big one to get us over 30wins! Permanent 2nd class citizenship while all the cool kids chase titles.

there was absolutely nothing he could have done here except pay Mobley the same money.
He put himself in the position to have nothing to do here. Bottom line this team is in trouble, we are waiting for miracles, and reality is setting in.

i have to agree....i see nothing that indicates this team wont be a 30 win team next year....other than some notion there is a master plan....in this day and age there are no miracles...the roster will continue to evolve...but it will take some time....

my guess is the kings and the lottery are destined for one another next year....

The loss of Cat does not mean by any stretch of the imagination that the Kings are in trouble. Sure, it would have been nice to get something in return for him, but with the Clipps under the cap there is nothing that GP could have reasonably done. IMO, if the Kings can get Bonzi the backcourt will be more solid than it was with Cat. The PF spot needs to be addressed and I think that it will be...it's only July 14th.

The way I see this is that we got rid of DC's contract. That is all that happened

That is fair.
I just dont like seeing someone walk for nothing.

It is also worth noting that GP said that Cat was one of the important things we would deal with this offseason. Looks like we didnt get around to dealing.

First the Clips get Cat, then they are talking to SAR at the same time while the Kings are and now a report that they are also interested in Bonzi Wells.

Mobley and Clippers Have a Deal
Veteran guard to sign a five-year contract to bring his three-point accuracy to Los Angeles.

By Jerry Crowe, Times Staff Writer

The Clippers may have finally addressed their long-range needs.

One year after trading for Kerry Kittles, who showed up with a bum knee and never panned out, they reached an agreement Wednesday with unrestricted free agent Cuttino Mobley on terms of a multiyear deal, Mobley's agent said.

Andy Miller, who represents the veteran shooting guard, declined to reveal terms, but it is believed to be a five-year deal worth $42 million.

Though offers made to Kobe Bryant and Gilbert Arenas in recent years and to Ray Allen this month were more lucrative, this will be by far the richest contract the Clippers have ever awarded a free agent from outside the organization.

Only Elton Brand, who as a restricted free agent two years ago signed an $82-million offer sheet with the Miami Heat before the Clippers reeled him back by matching it, has ever wrung more cash out of owner Donald T. Sterling.

But the Clippers, who last season finished last in the NBA in three-point shots made and attempted, were eager to add a long-range shooter and to erase the sting of losing Bobby Simmons, who last week accepted a five-year, $47-million offer from the Milwaukee Bucks.

For an average of $8.4 million annually, $1 million a year less than they would have had to pay Simmons to match the Bucks' offer, the Clippers landed a player they believe fits better in their starting lineup, fills their most pressing need — he ranked third in the NBA in three-point shooting accuracy last season — and gives them more flexibility to continue scouring the free-agent market.

Looking to bolster their bench, they'll continue talking to Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Marko Jaric and Zeljko Rebraca, and also are interested in pursuing another veteran shooting guard, Bonzi Wells. The Memphis Grizzlies hold an option on Wells' contract but are expected to release him this month, making him a free agent. Contracts cannot be signed before July 22.

Mobley, who will turn 30 on Sept. 1, is expected to move into the starting lineup alongside Brand, Corey Maggette, Chris Kaman and Shaun Livingston, enabling Maggette to move back to small forward, his more natural position.

"We're very excited about the opportunity," said Miller, Mobley's agent.

"The Clippers have been very diligent and aggressive in pursuing Cuttino and we're extremely pleased with this deal … and the opportunity that lies in front of us."

A 6-foot-4 left-hander, Mobley has averaged 17.1 points in seven NBA seasons, the first six with the Houston Rockets, while making 43.3% of his shots, 38.3% from beyond the arc.

He was traded twice in the last 13 months, last summer to the Orlando Magic and in January to the Sacramento Kings.

He averaged 17.2 points last season, then opted out of a contract that would have paid him $6.4 million next season.

Asked how Mobley would fit with the Clippers, Miller said, "Perfectly — on many levels: in terms of his role, his personality, his experience. They're right on the cusp of being a playoff team, and I think adding him into the mix will only enhance the situation. He's infatuated with L.A., thinks it's a great opportunity for him, really likes the environment there, the climate, all the variables that go into living in the L.A. region. So, it fits on a business, professional and personal level."

Miller said other teams were interested — Sacramento had hoped to put together a sign-and-trade deal — but the Clippers made the most sense.

"As we sifted through it," he said, "they're a young team, they have a good nucleus, a very, very good coach. They're very aggressive with everything, laid out a very specific plan, stuck to that plan.

"And for Cuttino and where he is in his life and his career, he felt that this was the opportunity that he'd been looking for for quite some time."

If I had a choice to let him walk or keep him for 42 mil - I would have done the same

We drafted 2 SG's in the last 2 years - might as well play them some

I think we are better than 30 wins just on the basis of the "core" alone. But certainly not guaranteed of a playoff spot in the nasty West.

All of the rumors flying about do not speak so much to a plan as they do to a scramble. Some of them have been bad ideas, but some of them, Nene and Bonzi here recently, seem to indicate at least a realization of the problem and what's needed to correct it. Remains to be seen whether we actually are able to, but if Geoff "gets" it and has a fire under his butt, he is as capable as anyone. The problem is it just gets tougher and tougher the fewer pieces we have to deal with.

I guess that Cat is getting back to 82 games seasons through which he went during his whole meaningless career (he does make good money)

Now those pathetic worms are beginning to pee me off. Given how cheap they are, wouldn't be surprised if Sterling just did away with his entire (one man) scouting office and told Elgin, his GM/personal secretary/butler/lapdog/chauffer/sole remaining employee etc. etc. to just go after anybody Geoff was rumored to be interested in because he seemed to know what he was doing.

Cat doesn't just want to play ball, he wants to be a model and I'm sure that was part of his thought process about wanting to play in LA.

This is the only explanation I've heard that would explain why he didn't do a S&T to get 6 years instead of 5...he only plans on playing another 5 years. Personally, I'll be hoping the first time we play he and the Clipps we burn him good given his cavalier treatment of a team that rescued him from Orlando and allowed him to "free-lance" during many of his minutes on the floor for us only to turn to a laughing stock team for money with no regard of how his exit leaves his former team.

Well it's safe to say that the money is worth more then actually winning a championship. Good players usually start off on bad teams and then are traded for by a good team. It's like he's starting his career all over again.

I was thinking the same thing.

Sterling is known as the Scrooge of the NBA and all of a sudden he's opening his pursestrings?

I certainly hope Petrie has a plan because so far we're looking like the last one to be picked from the nerd group on the playground...

From Chad Ford's ESPN chat
John (Irvine): Is Cutino Mobley a good addition towards making the Clippers a playoff team? What else do they need to do this summer to improve?

SportsNation Chad Ford: I feel bad for the Clippers. I think they've got a nice young core, a good coach and that owner Donald Sterling has changed his ways (at least a little bit). But they still can't get a top tier free agent to sign their. They were very close with both Kobe and Ray Allen. Instead they have to settle for Mobley at 5 years, $42 million. I'm not a big Mobley fan. I think he provides some outside shooting, and his lack of size shouldn't be an issue with Shaun Livingston on the floor ... but he's still a major downgrade from what the Clippers had hoped to achieve. By my calculations the Clippers still should have around $10 million left under the cap to sign free agents. They've made an offer to Shareef Abdur-Rahim. But ...

This sucks. I went from feeling wary about this offseason to feeling like we are going absolutely nowhere today. Letting Mobley walk for nothing? And not getting Oberto- not that I thought he was a lock, but GP was supposed to be interested. Now no trading pieces and the MLE are what we need to salvage this team. I get the feeling, at this pace, we're headed for 2 games over 500 and out of the playoffs.

EASY!!!

First, the the Kings were not in a position to dictate anything to Mobley. The Clipps were under the cap and there was no need for Mobley to partake in a sign and trade.

Secondly, there's still time left to make some changes to the roster. Change just for the sake of change(Walker) makes no sense. Let's see how it plays out.

I never liked Cat. I know it hurts to get nothign for something, but the reality is the Kings were not going to win anything with him, IMHO. Better to develop more draft picks.

The reality is we just let $5 million worth of player walk out the door that we're unable to replace because we're over the cap. It's not about developing draft picks. It was about getting something out of the deal that originally sent Christie to Orlando for Cat. Now Cat is gone and so is the value of his salary. That's not a winning situation in anyone's book...
