Countdown to Muss' being "Trumped"

My prediction on the Musselman firing. Today (April 19th) at around 1:00 PM. That should be enough time to discuss things and then to announce to Musselman that he is fired.

The Maloof brothers were not at the final Kings game tonight in Sacramento. Rumor has it they were in Miami, FL "on business." The other less substantiated rumor says they were informally chatting with Stan Van Gundy about becoming head coach of the Kings. He's now working as a basketball and sports consultant with a local college there since being replaced by Pat Riley as Miami Heat head coach. Van Gundy (Stan that is) supposedly would like to return to Northern California. He was born and grew up in various parts of Cali along with his brother Jeff, current head coach of the Houston Rockets.

The Maloofs were in Miami for a Oprah taping a segment on Charity.

Wow, taking the conservative route in your prediction, eh?:D If it does happen today, man that's some swift authority for ya! lol

Stan Van Gundy would be my choice as a coach. He seems to be the best available out there other than Adelman who is just NOT coming back.

Stan Van Gundy is someone that I wanted us to get last year. I think he would be a good get.

What's good about him?

I think Iavaroni is the guy. Former NBA player, loads of assistant experience, and familiar with the fast-pace style that would come with building around Kevin, Salmons, Cisco and Douby. Toronto seemed to have him all but locked up until Sam Mitchell coached his way into a permanent job. He's been rumored to go to the Grizzlies, but I wonder if West's retirement will change that.

If that rumor is true there is one thing I dislike about it already... That should be Petrie's job.
Don't mind them being involved in the decision for head coach. Whoever they choose will be the new face of the franchise. I'm sure Petrie already knows who he wants, anyways. He probably has the same bulletin board of candidates he had last year. Just a matter of crossing Eric Musselman's name off the list, and deleting his PowerPoint presentation out of his Outlook inbox.

Did you read his bio at the link (#28 post) here? I'm not saying Stan Van Gundy is the be all, end all solution to getting the Kings out of the ditch the Musselman train wreck left them. Still, SVG has a track record of pulling a struggling team out of a hole and driving them hard into the playoffs with tough defense and improved offensive production.

As he was last summer, SVG would be a solid choice. No guarantees, but if he was the man its probably a quality pick.

Iavaroni is even more of a crapshoot, and some of his comments about having to learn how to ease off players sound almost Mussish. But his assistant coaching pedigree is golden: he's learned from the masters. If you are going the assistant coach route, hard to top his resume. Many of the best coaches were former NBA roleplayers.

No, I hadn't read it before I saw yours. I did read it and when I was reading about his Coach of the Month awards couldn't help thinking about Muss coming in second for Coach of the Year. Did you see a lot of Miami games when he was coaching? Did they look well prepared? Did they have few episodes where the offensive players were standing around? Did the defensive players help out when needed? Did they play hard every night? When he turned the team around was it a function of coaching or of players getting healthy? Why did Riley get rid of him? This is just my stream of consciousness. I'm not expecting that you can answer all these questions (though it would be great if someone could).

Or Adelman-ish, actually. Letting guys be free to do their thing. Musselman talked a big game about easing off and being buddy buddy with players, but that wasn't really his style.

That's what I was trying to get at actually -- almost a slight red flag...well maybe not red. Maybe pink. Light pink. Anyway, just in that he was too intense and rode his guys too hard and had to try to learn how to be a listener. Good that he says he's learned, good that he recognized the problme. But that was the game Muss was talking this offseaosn too, and we all know how that turned out. So...just one of those things. Iavaroni figures ot be somebody's head coach next season, be interesting to see how well he's learned those lessons.

rick on the other hand is/was always a pretty much laid back guy as far as I know, so I think the don't ride them till they hate you insight might have come more naturally for him.

The conservative route? I call it the quick way out of town route for Musselman. Shoot, in my opinion, I think Musselman has been the coach of this team six hours longer than I expected.

I won't be surprised when he is canned. Why? Musselman did not get this team to the playoffs. Simple as that. I think if Adelman was here, the team would have gotten into the playoffs this year. I feel Adelman gets the most out of his players while Musselman is just a mouth that everyone loves to mute out.

I said this once and I'll say to the day that I die, the Kings community had a good coach in Adelman. To get another coach like him will be very hard and almost impossible to get. I hope I'm wrong, but this past season was a huge downgrade at the coaching position.

I felt the only way to upgrade at coach was to get a coach who coached a team to a championship. That would have met that Larry Brown would have been the direction to go despite the bad showing in New York. When he got canned by the Knicks, that is the coach that the Maloofs should have gotten.

I just want it to happen soon. My bigest fear in regards to our team is that the "powers that be" will do nothing. If they make a change with Muss quickly, I ill have more faith that they are serious about improving this time. Muss is the first and easiest piece to fix. We need to get started as soon as possible. We need to hire sombody before too long as well - at least before the free agency period.

Petrie is going to be on 1140am with Grant and Mike today.

Not sure what hour Petrie will be on but the show starts at 4:00pm.

It's getting closer...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/rumors/post/Kings-will-fire-Musselman?urn=nba,29955&cp=2

According to numerous sources close to the team, head coach Eric Musselman will not return as coach of the Sacramento Kings.
The team's future as it pertains to Musselman will reach a quick resolution. Kings' President Geoff Petrie will conduct one-on-one interviews with the players Thursday and meet with Musselman on Friday in what some close to the situation see as a mere formality.

Well, it's definite, but AP didn't give a source. I'd say that it becomes official a minute or two into the press conference which is scheduled for 2:00.
