Could Hawes = Vlade?

Why else do we draft thompson, sign May, invite Melvin Ely. Reason is to test the progress of hawes, and he has 1 season to show and prove. GL

Hawes has a different game than Vlade. And Hawes is MUCH younger than the savvy veteran we Kings fans knew and loved.

When GP signed Vlade he was at the top of his game! Hawes is about to start his third season after ONE year of college ball. This is a big year for Hawes. I expect he will really come into his own. As far as matching up agaisnt Howard, Oden and Shaq. Forget about it, just plan to double them and play all the bigs on those nights due to foul trouble.

What made Vlade special wasn't his scoring, FG%, rebounding or blocking, although all of those were fine. It was the fact that he became both a 7'1" PG and a great leader. Leadership skills aren't quantifiable, but he didn't do anything special WRT assists until his 4th-5th years. Comparison of early stats means little. Many bigs have stats like that.

Since no post-Vlade centers have managed to achieve similar things, I'd say that it's possible, but highly improbable.
 
i can sort of... see where Navy was going with it before he went off the ****ing ledge. I don't agree with him, but I do hope Hawes makes it an emphasis to improve his D and rebounding numbers. he has the tools, he just needs to prioritize. nobody needs him to be scoring 20 ppg. we need him to control the paint and block shots. that should be first and foremost. we don't really run an offense (and I don't think we will under Mr W) that will require a Vlade type passer so I'm not going to expect him to average 5-6 APG.

the whole David lee thing is a bit misconstrued, although I do agree that Hawes should be able to easily outdo Lee's numbers if given the minutes. THe knicks do run that crazy *** SSOL offense so Lee has more opportunity but still
 
Hawes has done well/had big games rebounding, even against good bigs. He has also had a few 5 block games, he even had a 6 block game (dont quote me)?

But as his scoring went up his rebounding/bpg numbers went down. Kid needs to find a balance as he has good potential on both sides of the court. I'd rather have a 15/9/2.5 big than a 20/7/.9 big.

I agree with your post but think Hawes also suffered a bit last season from not getting clear direction from the coaching staff. He really had to try and find his own niche since the coaching staff couldn't decide who they wanted to do what when.

I think if Hawes gets more consistent and balanced coaching we'll see him do a lot better on both ends of the court.

Comparison of early stats may mean little, but in Hawes case thats all we have. I would say the the fact that their early stats are almost the same is encouraging, but certainly not definitive. In college, Hawes was a very good passer, and I think thats a part of his game that hasn't been tapped as yet. Hopefully Westphal will install an offense that utililizes his post and passing skills. If so, I think his offensive rebounding will go up. Its hard to grab offensive rebounds when you sitting out at the three point line.:rolleyes:

Totally agree, and let's not forget that Hawes didn't have a PG who could get him the ball down low.

Game after game I watched Hawes race down the court to set up in the post, and no one ever got him the ball. When the guard cant get you the ball, and the coach has you playing out at the top of the key drawing the opposing center away from the basket so Kevin can drive into the paint, it just isn't fair to critisize his low post game and call him out for shooting too many 3's.
