Cleveland and Sacramento trade:

Hall of Famer
I don't normally start trade threads, but when I read this in Hoopsworld this one sprang to mind..

Zydrunas Ilgauskas (Cleveland Cavaliers)
Shaquille O'Neal's play hasn't exactly run Big Z out of town, but he's on the block anyway as the Cleveland Cavaliers lack assets. They're looking for a versatile forward who can shoot the ball and are willing to package second-year forward J.J. Hickson with Ilgauskas. Ilgauskas still has a little bit left in the tank but most importantly is $11.5 off the books at season's end. The Cavs should get some offers come February that will warrant strong consideration.

So here's my trade:

The Kings trade to Cleveland:
Kenny Thomas - expiring contract. $7,500,000.00
Nocioni - three remaining years. $8,775,000.00
Total salaries: $16,275,000.00

Cleveland trades to the Kings:
Ilqauskas - expiring contract. $11,541,074.00
Jenaro Moon - one more year remaining. $3,000,000.00
Total salaries: $14,541,074.00

Trade works on ESPN trade checker:

Why the Cav's do it:
They aquire the versatile forward that they were looking for, and Thomas comes off the books at the end of the year, which is almost a push with Ilqauskas salary.

Why the Kings do it:
They solve their third big problem for the rest of the year. Ilqauskas 11.5 mil comes off the books at the end of the year, giving them more cap space than the 8.7 mil they would have had with Thomas. They rid themselves of Nocioni's long contract in exchange for Moon's 3mil contract that runs for one more year.

I don't know if they would bite on that, but Nocioni is the type of forward I think they would be looking for, considering that he's very experienced. From our point of view I think its a no brainer.

I really don't see any reason why Cleveland would do this. Z is an integral part of the Cavs right now, and with them definitely in the hunt for all the marbles, I cannot imagine them upsetting the apple cart for a trade like this.

And, as an aside, I disagree that Shaq has made Z expendable. One of the reasons the Cavs are where they are is the ability to rotate between O'Neal and Ilguaskas.

As far as the Kings are concerned, this doesn't solve any problems for us in the long term. If we're going to get rid of KT's contract, we need to do it for more than just trading expirings.

Hoopsworld seems totally ignorant of the current status of the Cavaliers or the high caliber of play they're getting from their current roster. Trading anyone away at this juncture seems pretty silly IMHO, unless it's for an OBVIOUS upgrade for the playoffs, which this trade fails at being.

Well you could be right. Actually their article was referencing an article by Marc J. Spears from Yahoo sports. So how much truth there is to it is anyone's guess. However my trade was based on the idea that there might be truth to the article.

As far as just trading KT for expirings, that part is a net gain for us. Instead of losing $8.7 mil off the books we lose $13.2 mil, which gives us more financial wiggle room. We also lose Nocioni's long contract and pick up Moon's short contract, which is less than half what Nocioni would make. Nocioni is more of an offensive player than Moon. But Moon is a very good defender, which is why I wanted him.

I did error when I said the Cav's saved money this year. They would actually be taking on an additional 1.7 mil this year, but they would be getting an expiring contract back for next year in KT.

Hey! Its the day after christmas. I got coal in my stocking and I'm bored. :)

I tossed an idea similar to this not to long ago.

Sacramento Out:
Beno
Nocioni

Sacramento In:
Ilqauskas - expiring contract. $11,541,074.00

Cavaliers Out:
Ilgauskas

Cavaliers In:
Beno
Nocioni

I like the idea of getting Moon, but he's playing good defense so I don't think the Cavs would be willing to trade him. With that said, Nocioni+Beno is a huge upgrade for Cleveland over Ilgauskas.

For the Kings we basically clear our logjam and get rid of our older, more expensive contracts.

I think it's a win/win for both teams, and it leaves KT's expiring for us to keep to try and bring in an elite player in free-agency or look for an Okafor/Dalembert swap as has been discussed in the past.

Here's a question for all of you:

There have been different proposals for packaging Beno for someone like Gortat which I'd be all for, and then the prevailing theory is that we could trade Nocioni to a contending team for expirings and the like. Well, it seems as if Boston isn't interested in Nocioni, so looking at the various contending teams, do you actually see any of them trading expirings for Nocioni?

I wasn't seeing much out there, which is why I'd be completely for a Nocioni/Beno for Ilgauskis swap.

If we can't get a good deal with KT's expiring, I would do the trade proposed by Bajaden. It would bring back a good defensive role-player who has more upside than Udoka while helping with the logjam/contract which Nocioni causes us.

Thing is the Cavs don't need a 4th PG type, and probably aren't goping to be eager to burn their capspace before the summer of Lebron.

They are rumored to be looking for an outside shooting 4/3 though, which is where I assume the inital impetus of this idea comes from. Noc is our logical fit for that kind of deal. But I'm not sure if they would do that with Z -- be dangerous to theri chemistry I would think , and not much of a way to repay Zs decade + in the uniform. Remember Ferry was a Z fan years ago as well. Mike Brown does not seem to show him much respect, but the organization, and maybe even more importantly, Lebron, certainly seem to have. A good idea though if you could pull it off -- the initial deal that is.

The base of a Noci for Big Z trade is a good foundation. I don't think Cav's part with Moon though - they have been using him more and more lately. Hickson you might be able to pry from them

I like Hickson and he's younger than Moon. The problem is that the trade doesn't work money wise with Hickson. If you pull KT out of the deal, then the trade doesn't work money wise either. Thats why I put Moon into the deal. Remember, although their losing Moon, a SF, their gaining Nocioni, a SF, whose a capable defender, but a much better scorer than Moon.
