Chuck Hayes?

Entity

Hall of Famer
I really hope its the injury but Chuck just doesn't look good at all. His rebounding is subpar at best and his shooting WOW. Now his defense is starting to struggle. Wishing we would have extended JT when we had a chance.

he was one of or only bright spots before he got hurt. Remeber the guy didn't even have a training camp, nor did he play any preseason games.

I said it may be the injury, but really? a bright spot? One thing that bothers me is he was tauted this great passing big man. I'd say and many would agree both JT and Cousins are far better. Either way I think the bench is best fit for him.

You realize only Rose, Westbrook, Love, Gallo and Koufos got extensions? Koufos was the only non big payday. That means the other 25 picks didn't get extensions.

I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm pretty sure his arm is only safety-pinned onto his body at this point.

Uhm ok. cool I guess? not sure what your point is. I just said I wish we would have extended JT. Just out of curiosity I wish Demarcus Cousins would get 20 rebounds every game.

He never really had a chance to get going this year with the injury. It's going to take him awhile to get his game back and trust that shoulder again. In Hayes absence Thompson is proving himself to be worthy of starting. If JT keeps this up I see no reason why he can't be the permanent PF to play next to Cousins. Hayes makes more sense as a bench player anyways.

My main point on the extension is this.. Hayes is making 5-6 mil a year for 4 years. JT is grossly outperforming and starting in front of him. Now with no extension and free agency looming in his future. Its gonna take at least 7-8 mil a year to keep JT around. I'm just saying we may have been able to save some money with an extension unless they didn't see JT as part of the future.

If they lose JT right when he's finally starting to really get good, that may be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me. They absolutely need to bring him back. When he gets minutes he's practically a guaranteed double double.

Agreed. But for some reason I have a feeling like they will eff-it-up and let him go. Would be one of the biggest disasters.

Jason used to be dumber than a rock, and back in the day the only difference between Jason THompson and a ROCK - was that one was a dumb and useless object...and the other was a rock.. But now he's really grown as a player. He's a definite keeper, we cannot lose him!

When it comes to Hayes...he was never a big impact kinda guy to begin with. I just hope he can play some D for us, thats all

Somethings got to give. Either we let JT walk or we must rid salary via salmons/cisco or hayes

Oh its not nearly that dire. We still have the lowest payroll in the league, and we still have our amnesty to use on somebody if we want. Be nice to clear that junk salary, but Jason is already earning $3mil this year, and its doubtful he's going to get some big $8mil a year offer or anything. We should be able to bring him back for probably no more than a couple mil a year more than he's already being paid.

I tend to agree and I have long claimed that he is as good a 3rd big as one could hope for. When JT gets the minutes and when he has a clear role on the team, he has been very productive! The problem is that once upon a time people were expecting a 20/10 and a new Webber. That was never going to happen but he was always going to be a productive big in the league. A role player.

Now he has a clear role on the team. He has a big guy in Cousins who takes away the heat from him which allows JT to go out and play. Sure he makes a mistake every now and then but he is a great role player. He has length, is a good rebounder and can get his points without getting in the way. JT is a must keep for us and if we can get another 6'11 + defensive shot blocker on the team that can guard 4s and 5s we would have a very very good front court rotation.

If anything, JJ Hickson is the odd man out here despite being more athletic than JT.

Probably the reason why Whiteside is back was to rest Chuck at practice and have another big body out there.

As for this "we should have extended JT" thing, I think it's too early to worry about him leaving. Let's just hope this team continues to win and build good chemistry. Good chemistry is one of the key things that small market teams need to prevent their players from leaving.

Chuck Hayes is playing with one arm, and he still is a pretty good bench player.

JT has arrived, Paired with the New Improved Cousins, what a front court duo!

He will be a restricted free agent. And hence the issue with an extension is just what is his value. The Kings have overpaid in the past why not let the market dicate the salary next summer?

Here's the interesting question, though -
IF the Kings had extended JT early, would they have been able to for less than $5 a year?
If I remember the zeitgeist a month ago, the answer is an easy YES.

Now?

Now they gave JT an entire year of fairly-unobstructed playtime to rack up double-doubles in a contract year to boost up his contract value.

Stupid stupid stupid.

I say this not because _I_ would have extended him early - up until this year I would have been happy to see the guy walk off the team and allow ANYone else his spot. But I'm not the multi-million-dollar professional who's career it is to save a sports organization money, and I don't see him in practice proving he got smarter over the offseason and learned a go-to post move.

Petrie may well have cost the Kings many many millions by not extended JT BEFORE he had the chance to feast on the garbage play this season is providing him.

If Jason's value goes up, isn't there a chance he might become a valuable asset as a sign and trade? I'm not strong on contract stuff, but it seems that might be something that hasn't been concerned.

Only if he and his agent were willing to sign for that .................

Seriously guys? Chuck is useless? Pretty sure he basicly shut down aldridge the other night. Great defensive big off the bench imo.

They're just playing the old game, "Name the goat." Since Salmons is apparently - at least for the time being - no longer eligible, they have to move on to someone else.

I agreed that his contract is a concern if he continue to improve his game.

But is it stupid to give a double/double competitive JT more minutes, especially if other players can't play the position as well? I don't see how one can call that stupid.

Easier to look back and say things than look forward and made decision for the future.

Grossly? Eh, JT is averaging 11 and 8 since being put in the position he's in, lets not go overboard with how well he's performing, at least not individually. Very solid indeed, and he's producing in the way you want a role player to produce: garbage points and easy baskets where he's being ignored by the defense. You saw the value of Hayes in that Portland game. JT was getting trashed, Hayes comes in and basically saves the game by shutting down Aldridge, because if not, you're staring at a loss.

The shoulder is for sure bothering him. I saw on that play against Robinson where he switched off Nate was on his left side and his brace wouldn't allow him to fully extend his arm to challenge the shot. Braces like the one he is wearing restrict certain movement.

I think you let the year play out and see how well JT performs. Do I think the Kings should pay him 7 million a year? Not on production, not on talent, but if the Kings are climbing that ladder in a hurry, you have to keep him around. If not, he's playing the exact way you had hoped if you are looking to strengthen another position via trade. It's that double edged sword, player plays like crap and fans want him traded. Playing like crap does nothing for your value. Player plays well, fans don't want him traded, but his value is higher.

Also, on the subject of his passing. It's just not being used, there is no plan in place to get Hayes those assists. Same with Cousins. These guys both averaged 4 assists per game in april last year. That wasn't a fluke, we saw Cousins, and some of us saw Hayes. Hopefully in time Smart will put some plays in that use the passing of both because it's a waste that Cousins is averaging 1 apg for a team that can't even get 20 on a good night.

Not to mentions his screens. If you watch a Chuck Hayes screen you'll see his value. Some as a fan may not see it, but I can assure you that Tyreke Evans, Marcus Thornton, and John Salmons see it every time Hayes in on the floor.
