Christie wants back

I'm not entirely sure you're in the best position to make judgments about what is best for Doug Christie's life.

I'd love to have Christie back as a defensive coach. It's funny, from some of the things he said at the rally (I don't recall the exact words, but something like "I'm really excited to be coming back") I wondered if there hadn't been an announcement I had just missed that he was being hired back on.
I couldn't agree more with your first statement...Doug and Jackie have been HAPPILY married for a LOOOOONG time and have 4 beautiful children together. In this day and age, however you make it work in your relationship is best for YOU and your spouse/family...and that's ALL that matters! As a happily married man with 2 sons, I have always applauded Doug and Jackie's zest in their relationship...hey, it might seem psychotic to some, but perfectly functional and happy for them...in this day and age of infidelity(especially with pro athletes)if you say 'I Do', far too often marriage seems temporary to some, and the people that keep their families/marriages together seem not normal to alot. Oh well, to each their own, I guess. BTW...I'm all for Doug coming back as a coach with us, a little toughness, experience, and maturity to add to our kids is never a bad thing.

Every single player on the Kings backed him up in the Rick Fox fight.
Well, to be perfectly honest, if you put those two in a room with ten random people that have never seen either of them, chances are that nine of the ten would support Doug.

Now first, I think it would be great if Doug could start working with some of our players. But things need to have changed to make a more formal position a no brainer (they may have, I do not know).

The problem with that ****ed up relationship was never what went on between Doug and Jackie -- I think ultimately that hurts his ability to be taken seriously in a mature professional type setting, but she can slap him in cuffs the instant he comes home and add a bit and nipple clamps for all I care. The problem with it is that she is a complete nut, and made it everybody ELSE'S problem too. She accosted personnel, tailed team buses, barred her husband from so much as talking to female employees (if a male did this to a woman we would call him a pig and advise her to get the hell out). After he retired, she then embarked on an emasculating career of self aggrandizement using Doug's name while dragging him around like a whipped puppy -- no I do not for an instant believe Doug himself puts out "sensual adivice for couples" tapes, reality TV shows, or lines of incredibly cheesy handbags with his name on them.

Doug is by all accounts a great guy (somewhat notable I suppose a great guy for US -- people's experiences with him in other cities was less positive). He is not the problem. But part of being a professional is keeping your personal problems personal and not letting them bleed over into the workplace. And Doug could never make that call -- Jackie would never allow it. She has no respect for him. And while he's playing basketball, and is one of the league's elite defenders, you deal with it. But now the guy is coming back looking for a real job. A hardworking nose to the grindstone adult job where he may or may not be any better than any number of other scouts and assistant coaches. He's not an elite irreplaceable unique entity anymore, and I hope for his sake one of them realizes that, because her behavior has the potential to embarrass him and ultimately dim his prospects.

Good take on the situation, Brick.

I think DC's personal life has taken WAY too much of a focus on his professional life, and dominates people's opinions of him, which should be near-irrelevant.

Except on the professional level, as a coach/advisor, their relationship CAN intrude and affect his ability to help this team.

For their sake, I hope Jackie understands this and backs the hell off and lets him do what he can - this team could desperately use his hardwork, tenacity and bball IQ.

What I liked best about him is that he made it to what he was through HARD WORK and dedication to improvement - he wasn't born with what he learned, nor did he enter the NBA with those skills - he saw what worked, and learned it.

Like others have said, I'm not going to be judgemental about a relationship that works for the people involved. All things considered, sustaining a marriage where it appears they are happy with each other and still in love after many years, is to be commended. If something is wrong with that, more marriages could use whatever "that" is.

On the other hand, I know part of the reason Doug was happy here, is the team catereed to the situation, where other teams did not. Jackie was always allowed to travel on the team plane, for example. A lot of other teams don't allow that. By the way, he's teammates said they had no problem with the Christies. Webber once said he'd like to find what they have.

The issue of hiring Doug, and I'd love that, is the Maloofs got sued for harrassment over a problem that arose between Jackie and some MSE employee that Jackie thought shouldn't talk to her husband at all. I don't remember how it turned out now, but I'm sure the Maloofs do not have fond memories of that.

Ah...here's a link to an article about the filing. http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2003/06/30/story2.html

QFT!

Was about to make a post similar, but no need. I am happy for him and the fact that he has a close relationship with his wife. I just can see it interfering too much with his professional life (like it did when he was a player).

That is quite rediculous on the Christies part. Both Jackie for interfering with two NBA organizations, and Doug for allowing his wife to act like a menace in the work place. I would fully support hiring Doug, but at the same time can fully understand why an organization would pass.

You can't allow your wife to physically confront team employees for doing their job. Jackies own personal insecurities should never get involved with the organization Doug works for. Does the CFO of IBM, for example, allow his wife to come in to the office and intimidate any female colleague who exchanged emails with her husband? No. That's not the way the world works. What if Doug was an attorney for a large firm in a different life, and had a female secretary? I could see Jackie being brought up on assault charges, because she can't handle Doug talking to 53% of the world population.

I do think Jackie's jealousy is to the level of an unhealthy mental problem. Although I will say, I don't think I could handle being married to someone who always has willing women throwing themselves at him. (Rock stars, movie stars, athletes, etc.) Infidelity is almost a given in those relationships.

Doug must be a true saint. I tried for eight years to make a relationship work with an unhealthily jealous man. Finally, I just said, "Screw this. Its not worth it!"

Doug will never get a job with the Kings because of Jackie and he shouldn't. As to their marriage, it's working. I suspect Doug can't control her any more than anyone else can. Not even sure he should as it is his life and he seems willing to put up with a lot. At this point in his professional career, he will pay a price but in the long run, I suspect he can live with it just as he has for many years before.

Call it screwed up but I've seen a lot of unusual relationships defined as such by people who think they are normal. The relationships worked and in the end, that is a difficult achievement in this day and age. I wonder how many pro basketball players HAVEN'T cheated on their wives. How many wives tacitly allow it simply to live the life style? There is a lot of temptation.

The only opinion on the marriage that matters in the end, is Doug and Jackie's. Besides, "normal" is just an academic construct. There is no such thing as normal in real life. It's usually used by people who want to be seen as normal. The "they're the abnormal ones, not me" people.

Just like the idea of anyone actually "controlling" things in real life. Its a mere illusion to which we cling. ;)

LOL. Here I am at 60 and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I had a cousin who used to say, "I'm fine, its every one else that's crazy." :D
We suffer from the same afflection. For which I'm sure, there is no cure...
