Sacramento and prosperity not separating just yet

Aug. 15, 2005

Sacramento reached the 50-victory plateau for the fifth consecutive season in 2004-05, extending its streak of postseason appearances to seven. It sold out every game at Arco Arena, running the league's longest active streak to 267.

While that's the black and white of it, anyone suspecting all was well in Kingsville wasn't paying attention.

Bonzi Wells looks to clean up his rep in Sacramento. (Getty Images) The Kings won five fewer games than they had in any season since 2000, broke up their long-time nucleus by dealing hampered Chris Webber and flopped in the first round of the playoffs.

Despite getting back the services of Bobby Jackson and a limited Brad Miller, Sacramento was dominated by Seattle, which won four of five as unheralded Jerome James had his way inside. For a team that once stood as the most worthy rival of the three-time champion Shaquille O'Neal-led Lakers, being discarded by James and Co. in such unceremonious fashion seemed like a bitter way for the long run of success to end.

Word that team owners Joe and Gavin Maloof were looking to secure Phil Jackson's services leaked out sloppily, leading to speculation that long-time coach Rick Adelman would resign rather than go into the final year of his deal walking the tightrope.

Messy. Divorces usually are, and it certainly appeared the Kings and prosperity were about to go their separate ways.

A few key transactions later, it's starting to look like the sun isn't setting quite yet. At the very least, there's going to be one more year.

Adelman is staying put, and the recent acquisition of Shareef Abdur-Rahim is the boldest move in an offseason that has seen GM Geoff Petrie part ways with Jackson, one of the most popular players ever to throw on a Sacramento uniform. Also gone are Cuttino Mobley and Greg Ostertag, pieces that never quite fit right in their brief stints.

Bonzi Wells, coming on board to replace Mobley as the team's primary option at shooting guard, and Abdur-Rahim, likely moving in ahead of Kenny Thomas at power forward, were the two main options Petrie identified as potential reinforcements. These two, the brilliant executive thinks, will complete the team's puzzle. Abdur-Rahim, who played a season at Cal before turning pro, agrees, citing the potential continuity as his chief reason for going back to Cali.

"I think it's a nice fit," said Abdur-Rahim, who once earned the nickname "The Future," but has seen his promise go to waste on losing teams, never once reaching the playoffs. "There's things I can do on the basketball court I think can help out some of the other guys, Mike, Brad, Peja, Bonzi, and they do things that help my game. I really believe it's a great fit.

"The thing for me was getting on a team that there's a chance to win and win big."

With Phoenix presumably slipping some once Joe Johnson's departure becomes official, the Kings have a legitimate shot at ascending to the top of a Pacific Division in which every other team -- the Clippers, Lakers and Warriors -- feels they have improved. That remains to be seen, but none appear to have the collective firepower Sacramento has assembled.

Abdur-Rahim and Miller are versatile in that they can handle the ball in and out of the post, knock down a 15-footer and set up things for others. Those are key ingredients for what seemingly should be a mean high-low game. Thomas and Brian Skinner, acquired in that Webber deal, will join Corliss Williamson in helping keep the starters fresh, coming in to bang and rebound, giving the Kings an edge similar to the one Seattle received through Danny Fortson and Nick Collison last year.

Peja Stojakovic can now look forward to a full season without distractions of people asking him about his relationship with Webber and can settle back into being just another one of the weapons rather than the unquestioned primary one. With so many parts around him, he'll no doubt get plenty of open looks while deflecting the leadership to Mike Bibby, who enters next season ripe to reach a new level of stardom

At 27, the point guard is entering his prime, and though an All-Star berth has avoided him, this could be the year that drought ends. If the Kings are truly going to succeed, it's going to be his job to keep everyone happy with his distribution while making sure the ball is in the right player's hands in crunch time -- his own. The Sacramento Kings are his team, and he has to make it all work.

Bibby will have a new backcourt mate as the Kings' revolving door at that position continues. From a talent level, it might be the most talented one. From a chemistry standpoint, it could be another story.

Wells, who fell out of favor in Memphis, is looking forward to reclaiming his spot as one of the game's most talented offensive players while losing the distinction of being "troubled." His reputation as a brooding malcontent precedes him, but his major beef has always been getting minutes. As the starter ahead of young players Kevin Martin and Francisco Garcia, he'll get plenty of floor time and opportunities.

"I know what type of person I am, and all I can do is just show you," Wells said at his introductory press conference. "I just want to show the city of Sacramento the real Bonzi Wells, the person I am, and the person I've grown to be."

He'll have this one contract year to do it. Ditto for Abdur-Rahim, hoping to restore his reputation as an elite player and erase doubts about his knee. Same goes for Adelman, looking to put the Jackson flap behind him and re-earn his owners' confidence.

One year. Potentially, it could be a great one. Undoubtedly, it will be a big one in determining the direction of the franchise.

A very positive article to see, and I gotta say for once I agree with all of it. Things def won't be dull next year thats for sure, the team is looking good right now.

It's an article about the Kings what do you expect? There's really no D to talk about...

i know yer just joking around, but i think this is really one of the roots of the problem. the fact that the kings havent been known as a defensive squad in the past doesnt mean they cant add one or two defensive minded players to the team. i dont like the fact that management has talked about improving defensively, but have made few (if any) visible attempts to acquire players that could help alter the team's defensive chemistry. it sucks, imo. something must be done! :D

I agree... but will it? It's looking doubtful now. At least we added some punch to make it seem interesting. Our Big 3 need to step up their "TEAM" defense. All 3 of them, Pejas good on the ball but please, his rotations suck almost as much as Brads. If Bibby, Peja and Brad take all the talk about their softness personally and the new guys really help on team D we may be improved a little in that area, stressing the word "little" of course. The team has more guys accustomed to stepping up and being the man in the starting 5 now, maybe as a collective that will translate into more heart/better D... and more pride cuz the team in the playoffs last year seemed to be seriously lacking in the P word.

hence there is no need to have expectations this season or the next or the one after that and so on.

This summer was/is too long for us (Kingsfans). Next one will be worse

The writer says it all in those few words. Good article. Thanks, jay dubb.

As far as "not a word about defense," so what? The article made some good points and I think it was worth reading. The purpose of the article was apparently to contrast the downs the team has gone through with some positives. (I know, piksi - it's a foreign concept for you, but some people actually manage to do it). We may not be back to top elite status but I, for one, certainly enjoyed seeing an article that attempted to put some things into perspective, wasn't laced with vitriol, and didn't condemn us to the bottom of the Western conference.

There is some room for optimism, piksi aside.

;)

Ironically, piksi - your piksimism has served a purpose. It has restored some of MY optimism.

Whoooooooooooo!!!

i don't know if its just mean, but i hate it when players say, "I can help out..." or " i think i can contribute..." it just irritates me because those words just seem to belittle what we brought them hear to do. Helping out to me is 2 or 3 rebounds and 4 points. Whatever, im sure he won't be that bad.:o

Not a bad article.

As far as chemistry of the backcourt, I'm not worried about it. I think Bonzi and Bibby will gel.

reverse psychology - I guess

lol. or optimism is just the smart way to go :).

I believe in Petrie, I believe in Adelman, I believe in the Big Three's ability, I believe in our bench.

I should die if I don't thus believe in the Kings doing well.

Either way, as many will agree...

for better or for worse...in sickness and in health...til bankrupcy and fold do us part.

nice article

i think the D will be passable. the O should be great. the bench is very deep and has some bangers on it. of course the kings won't be like the spurs on D, but if they can play good team D, and REBOUND ( ok maybe thats wishful thinking LOL!) i think the D will be alright.

man oh man i can't wait for the season to start! 2 and half monthsish!!!! boo yah!

I've always liked Meija, although it seems he has a soft spot for the Kings, he seems to be quite knowledgeable about what's going on with most teams in the NBA, he actually follows the game unlike others who just go by heresay or preconcieved notions. Good article, he doesn't address anything on our defense, but neither did we this offseason (except Hart).

I think you're putting too much on some throwaway comments.

It's not easy for players to come into a place like Sacramento, knowing full well the rabid loyalty of the fans to the home team. Here they are - they've just signed with a new team and they're supposed to say something that doesn't offend anyone, doesn't make them sound too wrapped up in themselves, gives the home town folks a reason to get to know them, etc.

It's not easy...

They're highly-paid professional athletes. They're being paid a LOT of money because they can do something better than all but a few other highly paid professionals. They're also very proud young men, and they should be. If they're saying something like "I hope to be able to contribute" or "I know I can help the team" then more power to them.

;)

I am, when all is said and done, a KINGS fan. I can't stay pessimistic about them. Hope springs eternal. It did back in the "Days of the Stinking" so it certainly has to do so now.

I DO love this team!!

this whole thread, article plus all the optimism from vf, has just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. hopefully the kings perfomance this year will instill the same feeling.

Good article and to say the least I'm hoping that we start off the season on a winning streak to boost everyone's confidence level.

Good article. To the point and objective. Others see what is going on as positive.

To the defensive nay-sayers, I haven't seen one article about any NBA team upgrading their defense (except Detroit of course) this summer. So get off that. Bonzi is a big defensive upgrade from Mobley and an even bigger alround upgrade from Christie. SAR is as good as it gets in the PF and brings a lot of all around ability. I think many are too quick to judge since none of us has seen the Kings play yet.

It would be hard to avoid -- I mentioned when the schedule comes out that it looks a lot like the 03-04 schedule: very soft to begin, and then getting much tougher in the second half of the season. We should be able to get off to a good start, which will be important for the rebuilt squad. On the other hand I would not be surprised at all to see us start to be exposed and slide late in the year, and everybody will complain about how we are "collapsing" with little regard to the schedule. If that happens, be a bad way to go into the playoffs and could be the excuse that ends Rick's tenure here. But nothing that can be done about it -- you have to have the soft part of your schedule some time, and having it early is about as good as we could hope for given all the nametags we are going to be handing out in training camp.

Get off the defense? C'mon Cruzdude, I do hope you are kidding. The defense is everything with this team. EVERYTHING. They simply cannot help scoring will all those weapons, but the ENTIRE eventual fate of the season depends on how well they defend. They should be able to approach 50 no matter how awful the defense is. But to be anything more, to matter in the least, they HAVE to defend. Otherwise we are the Mavs. The old Mavs. The ones we always made fun of. And history says our guys suck on defense, and have sucked for most of their careers. That's not promising. So its a very real concern. THE very real concern. I generally like Medja, and its not necessarily his responsibility to write about every aspect for every team. But 50% of the game is played defensively. And thus only talking about offense is only painting 50% of the picture.

Piksi, why not just watch Detroit all year, it would make a happier person.

Hmmmmmmmmm.........................defense.

We all know the D must improve from what the Kings did last year. There is no doubt in anyones mind. Heres to hoping it does!

The Kings know they have to play defense and they will, I mean tell me when have you ever heard this team talk about defense in any offseason like they have been talking about it this offseason. The Kings were EMBARRASSED by the Sonics and I know that this year they are coming into this season with a big chip on their shoulders and those guys know by now that YOU CANT WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP WITHOUT DEFENSE!!!

So I'm very confident that the Kings will be much better at D next year.
