Casspi - rookie hitting the wall or? (split from grades thread)

Ed2009

Bench
If Coach W. doesnt like Casspi he should not let him start.
The way he lets him play in the last games is simply a joke.
You want him to be your starter so let him gain some confidence.
Every stupid mistake he does he is sitting immediatly on the bench.

He is still a rookie but deserves his minutes to gain confidence.
Tired or not this is the time to let him and Donte play.

The bench is warm but it doesnt help our team at all!!
Let the young guys play-no one wants to see Noc on the floor!

WAKE UP PAUL! I AM FED UP!

I actually agree with PW on this one. He probably sees Casspi as the future starter at SF for the Kings, so he lets him get used to the starter role, but one of the lessons he is teaching Casspi - which I think is a lesson that Casspi still desperately needs - is that you have to earn your minutes even as a starter. Casspi has great potential, but in order to realize that potential, he needs to constantly work and improve and EARN whatever minutes he gets, and learn that he has to prove himself every step of the way. I am a big fan of Casspi (he is the reason I became a Kings fan), and I would like to see him play 40 minutes every night, but if he starts getting that sense of entitlement so early in his career, he will only grow to be a mediocre starter, and I think he can be much much more than that.

Agree with you Asaf. Good appraisal of Casspi and good appraisal of what Westphal is doing. W is doing the same thing with Greene who, I think, has a lot farther to go than Casspi. I differ with others on playing Nocioni and Udoka - I think they are valuable players in their roles, and the team is usually better off because they play the minutes they do. As far as their taking the young players minutes -- as you say, the young guys need to earn their minutes. That's the best lesson for them.

Totally agree with this assessment ASAF. Casspi is going to be a special player for us. He needs to earn those minutes so that he can become the special player he is going to be. Right now, as he is hitting the rookie wall hard, he needs to power through the fatigue and give Westphal all he has. I am hoping that Casspi will catch a second wind and finish off the season strong. He is a good shooter and a good play maker. Right now he looks a little beat 3/4 ths the way through the season, but not everyone can be like Tyreke.

I'm going to take the other side of the coin with Casspi. When he came to sacramento he was full of confidence and immediately made an impact. I think he had to deal with Westphaul's coaching earlier in the season the same he is now. The difference being early in the season he earned his status as a starter or a sixth man. The first minute Casspi started to struggle Westphaul benched him. I think this hurt Casspi's confidence. Instead of letting Casspi play through it Casspi had to earn his value all over again which is too much for any player let alone a rookie. I feel if Westphaul wouldve let Casspi play through his struggles and not shatter his confidence we would be seeing the Casspi we saw earlier in the season. Come on Casspi its time to step it up once again alot of us know you can and we'll be rooting for you. I miss the passion he brings and i blame it mostly due to the way coach not letting him play through his struggles.

Unfortunately, we have too many players who would need to play through their struggles. I think, in that regard, Westphal is between a rock and a hard place. These young players need to do it or not with what minutes they get. At some point here it is up or out. Casspi isn't anywhere near that point yet but he needs to regenerate himself and grow with or without pats from the coach.

I will stress again that I am a Casspi fan and that he is the reason I became a Kings fan. Having said that, I truly believe that ultimately, making Casspi having to earn his minutes constantly, and not only giving him playing time based on past performances, will be much more beneficial to Casspi to the Kings, even if it does momentarily hurt his confidence.

I've know Casspi for several years now. He has managed to overcome some of his weaknesses in an admirable fashion, and this is what made him an NBA starter in his rookie year even after being only a late first round pick. That is very impressive, and that's why I think he could become an allstar level player, and I think that PW and the front office feel the same way.

However, one weakness that he still hasn't overcome is that he still thinks he deserves credit and playing time based on potential and past performances. As an Israeli fan, I am exposed to his interaction with the Israeli media, and some of the things he said recently show that mental aspect that he needs to overcome to really take it to the next level. He was asked about his past coaches, and explicitly refused to give any of his past coaches even the least bit of credit for helping him get to where he is today. In his mind, he got to the NBA despite everyone who worked with him in Israel, and no thanks to any of them. That state of mind, where he doesn't think he can learn from others, is something that can stop him from reaching that next level. He needs to become more involved with others on the team. He should be way more enthusiastic in cheering on his teammates even when he's on the bench. And like PW said in regards to Hawes, but it applies to Casspi as well, he needs to learn how to fight through adversity. He needs to learn to take whatever minutes he gets, even if it's just 15 minutes, and make the best of them, without worrying whether he will be benched or not. There are 82 games in the season - he will get enough minutes regardless.

Right now Casspi is a very good player (although he is in a bit of a slump). PW is pushing him, and rightfully so, to become more than that. He is basically saying to Casspi "prove to me that if I'm benching you I'm hurting the team". If Casspi is benched now, any one of Cisco, Donte, and Even Noc and Udoka can step in and do a good job at the 3. PW is telling Casspi to step up his game to a level that any time he sits on the bench it will be a downgrade at the SF position. Casspi has the ability to do it and become that player. He just needs to actually do it and not think for a minute that he is there yet.

Very well said, Asaf!

There's no question that our boy Casspi has hit that rookie wall. You can see it in his eyes, the boy is dazed looking sometimes out there. I think he could benefit from some rest. Perhaps Garcia can start again, now that he's more acclimated. Casspi can come in off the bench and provide energy and better quality minutes

i agree with you, and it is not only Casspi it's Donte as well.
there was no reason in the last THUNDER game to let Udoka (3-12) or other guys take there minuts.
if you combine only 20 minutes for two of your best players (and most of the season they were 2 best to Tyreke imo), then it means you don't trust them.
when i look at NOH i am jealous of the way they treat their rookis, and the way they let them play even if they started the game with a miss, or some one stole there ball (or else Collison who is becoming a phenoman wouldn't have played).
Jaberko played two days ego 35 minutes in Detroit and scored nothing!
but the day after he played 35 minutes again.
udoka and nocioni should be the one playing 20 minutes, not the other way.
i also think Casspi and also Green are tired, but they can play for 20-25 minutes a game, i didn't see any of the other players so bright latly(except Landry who is a big steal).
even Reke had a few bad games and he is usually our best player.
i think it is mistake to bench those guys for most of the game, and it is even when they are playing well and let others like Udoka, Noc and May take there minutes (and actually play more minutes then both of them).
if PW doesn't trust them he should say it, but i don't think they are the reason for all those loses (while our PF and C softness were the main reason+Kmarts return imo).
i say let the kids play, and like the eskimos use to do, throw the old ones (in this case not to the sea but only to the bench).
and one last thing, guys don't get more motivated after they earn there minutes all year and suddenly being benched, they get frustrated, and lose there confidence.

I think Reynolds has alluded that the off the court stuff is hurting him, as well as the rookie wall. It's tough to be ambassador for Israel and be a rookie in the NBA.

I think you hit on Casspi's main problem right there. He is a young kid and he has had a huge burden placed on him from day one! It is already hard enough to play consistent minutes as a rookie in the NBA. In fact, MOST rookies get little or NO playing time. So the fact that Casspi is getting ANY playing time shows that the coaching staff thinks he is a very good player that has something to contribute to the team. Westphal has to do a delicate balancing act of getting the young players minutes and yet still win games! Sure he could play Casspi and Greene big minutes, have them either perform ok or below average, and lose games to benefit the team in the long run. But the Organization as a whole has decided that wining is important too. This summer free agents will be looking at the Kings, their record, and their chances to be a good team to join. If they dont get to 25-30 wins this year, it will look like a team that has a long way to go. No Free Agent wants to sign a long contract with a team that isn't headed in the right direction or doesn't have good chemistry and talent. Winning is the best thing the Kings can do right now, because it makes them more attractive to potential free agents this summer.

I think Casspi has gotten more minutes as a rookie than a majority of the players taken in the draft in the lower first round. He started the season strong and played very well. But the burden of carrying an entire nation, along with the burden of playing big minutes in a long season as a rookie have worn him out a little. It is ok for Westphal to balance Casspi's minutes with his production and overall health. Hopefully, Casspi will be able to power through this fatigue and continue to contribute down the stretch. But how many minutes Casspi plays is really up to Casspi. If he plays well, he gets more minutes. If he looks tired and is not playing well, he gets a rest. Either way he is a HUGH piece of the Kings future. He has already proven that with his play so far.

I think Greene is a totally different case. I think that Greene is a bit of a problem for Westphal because he doesn't always do what the coach askes him to do on the court. He tends to jack up 3's early in the shot clock and sometimes even misses his defensive assignments that allows easy scores for the other team. Greene needs to do what the team asks him to do, even if that is rebounding and playing good defense and letting others be the main option for scoring. I get the feeling that every time Donte gets on the court, he is more interested in making the monster dunk or the flurry of 3 point bombs than his is in playing within the offense and helping his team get a team win. He is very confident, and he has a lot of tools that can help the team win games. BUT Basketball is very much a team sport, and if you have 4 guys running the offense and one guy shooting the ball not within the flow of the offense that is a problem. I don't think Greene is a bad player, or that he is selfish. I think he is just young and learning how to play a team oriented brand of basketball. I believe he is going to be a very good player and a mismatch for anyone playing the small forward for years to come. But he needs to do the things the coaching staff is asking him to do and only shoot within the context of the offense.

I really like the way that Westphal has handled the team to this point. A lot of people were complaining about the way PW was not sticking to any particular lineup, and substituting too often, yet those same people want to see the young players get more playing time! PW has done a good job of getting rookies playing time AND still being in contention at the end of games. Remember most NBA rookies do NOT get the kind of minutes that the Kings rookies have gotten. And as for Greene, PW has done his best to reign in Donte and is getting him to play within the flow of the offense. When the Kings run their offense, they get good shots for everyone! When they go to the one on one basketball, the offense starts to bog down and become lethargic. At the end of games, we need a go to guy that can score, make plays, and keep us in games. So far Tyreke Evans has been that guy and he has done a pretty decent job considering he is a 20 year old rookie!! Tyreke hurdled over the rookie wall on his way to the rim !! He causes other teams to totally change their defensive schemes specifically to stop him from just ramming the ball down their throats on dribble penetration. So really only one player should be doing the one on one thing, and the coach has even said that one guy is Tyreke. The other guys on the floor need to move and get open so that 'Reke can get them the ball when the double team comes to try and stop him. I think Westphal is doing a great job considering the players he has to work with. They are young, very very young. I can't wait till this team has more experience and more confidence that will come from the playing time they are getting this year! The older players like Udoka and Nocconi wont be around much longer, but the young core of the Kings will be. The playing time these young players are getting now is going to help them become great NBA players in the near future.

LOL I get your point. Just too much free time being home after having surgery. I'll try and keep it shorter... It's hard to keep it under 2 paragraphs when you are just laid up in bed all day... Just love talking about the Kings and sports in general. I'm just a overzealous fan :D

p.s. at least I didn't use any BIG LETTERS Tetsujin !!

Not after that novel I just typed above!

I gotta remember people like posts that are under 2 paragraphs. :D

Oh well neither of you disagreed with any of my points. I guess that is a positive :-)
