Carter to the Suns

Yeah that's a pretty good haul for the Suns considering they're already locked into win-now mode with Steve Nash getting older. This may be one of the rare trades that's mutually beneficial. Clearly Orlando wanted to get Hedo back, that's the only way this trade makes sense. And they're probably the only team that would want him with that current contract so the Suns got away with one there. Pietrus wasn't getting a lot of playing team and he'd probably be happier stepping into a bigger role somewhere else. Considering Vince Carter was MIA in the playoffs last year I'd call the Richardson swap a plus for Orlando plus they get Earl Clark who's a nice young player. They don't need Gortat but they're in trouble now if Howard gets in early foul trouble.

Now that the 2 trades are official, meaning VC/Pietrus/Gortat for JRich/Hedo/EC and the Arenas for Lewis, I am having a hard time figuring out what the Magic depth chart will look like. Here's a stab...

C -Howard/Bass/Orton
PF-Turk/Anderson
SF-JRich/QRich/
2G-Arenas/Redick
PG-JNelson/Duhon/Williams

I think Hedo will be thier 6th man though, leading the 2nd unit - and Bass will get rewarded for his fine play with the starting 4.. the way I see it it'll be

Nelson, Arenas, J-Rich, Bass, Dwight... depth-wise thier prolem is they don't got a decent cover for Dwight like Gortat has been... thier frontcourt is lacking, and they might make a move to strength that area, cause Earl Clark is a backup center like i'm 7'5.

Fantastic trades for the Magic.. it's now or never for them if they want to keep Dwight, and they made thier move.. they're definetly a better team now and if Gilbert and Turk comes back to his old self, they're gonna be real good.... they're gotten worst on D, but thier problem was always scoring once teams keep Dwight in check.. J-Rich is a prolific scorer and doesn't need the ball in his hands like VC, and with Arenas and Turk added the MAgic are a much better passing - an area they were bad in before, so J-Rich will get his shots on good spots with those guys.

Lewis for Arenas is a no brainer for both teams really, and Arenas finally being on a contender comming with something to proove to the world should be exciting.

The other trade is amazing for the Suns, and kinda bad for the Magic - but they know is it and they must take the contract hit and even give the 1st rounder and cash, cause the goal is keeping Dwight.

Gortat will be great for the Suns and will be really missed for the Magic.. the 1st rounder and cash is just smart play by the Suns seeing the Magic are despret, good play by them.

They've had Hedo before and he started at SF so my guess is they like him there. That moves Richardson (Jason not Quentin) over to SG where he belongs and Bass stays at PF. The question then is what they do with Arenas. They already have a ton of backup PGs but Williams is really only good in spot minutes at this point and Duhon is more of a last resort than a backup. So my guess is Jameer starts and Arenas fills in as a combo guard getting minutes at both positions though they could also choose to start Arenas and bring Nelson off the bench. I don't watch Orlando enough to know whether Nelson is locked in as the starter or not.

Oh I guess forgot about Reddick. Since they're thin at SF now maybe Richardson gets some minutes as the backup there? It is a pretty confusing mix of players to figure out. They certainly have a full complement of shooters now to play around with regardless of where they put them.

I don't think they traded for Hedo to have him come off the bench. He's played in their system before and I'm sure Van Gundy will plug him into the spot he left. Especially with Lewis being gone.. The Magic haven't been the same team since Hedo left, so I don't think they made a trade to get him and have him ride the bench. Especially with the hefty contract that comes with him.

howard, bass, hedo, jrich and arenas in the line up is going to be fun to watch. lots of scoring ability to keep up w/ other top teams in the east.

He never played PF for them though. And failed miserably at i in Phoenix. We'll have to see.

In any case this was a pretty amazing coup for the Magic, unloading BOTH of their aging incredibly drab underperforming big contracts for potentially more dynamic personnel.

Orlando has plenty of shooters now. Now though, they have no big men to back up D12. They aren't going to get very far with that line up. They will be pretty fun to watch though. Suns got a nice deal because VC is an expiring and they get a solid big in Gortat, plus a draft pick and a decent three point shooter in Pietrus. Suns next have to deal Nash somewhere, try to get something for him. It's time for a rebuild here in Phoenix.

I am just glad my boy Gil is finally on a playoff team. I look forward to seeing him in the playoffs again and having a chance to get far, not too far, but still better than the first round.

I based it mostly on how I don't see Gilbert setting into the backup PG slot.. if they manage to make Gilbert like the off the bench role then this would be ideal, with Jameer/Jrich/Hedo/Bass/D12, with Arenas, Redick, Anderson etc off the bench.. they're gonna be an exciting offensive team if this clicks... still need a backup to D12 though, he's gonna need to play 40 a night in this situation.

in the long term, it would be arenas/richardson/hedo/bass(or anderson depending on the matchup)/howard with nelson coming off the bench a la vinnie johnson.

by the way, boogie-havoc, if you are not from microsoft research or somehow affiliated with it, you have chosen a very wrong nickname. ;)
