That's so sad. Who would have thought Roy would have been done before Oden? I can't stand the way the Blazers have run their organization recently, but I feel horrible for their fans, they deserved a Roy/Aldridge/Oden dynasty.
Horrible news. Roy was, and is a stand up guy. Great person, hard worker, a star who wouldn't ditch a small market. Arguably the #3 sg in the league for a brief period.
I feel for him. I had my playing career ended suddenly by injuries, and this is on a much bigger scale for him, obviously. Extremely hard thing to go through. Hope he is able to recover mentally, and can still stay involved with the game somehow.
He went and stood in the hallway for the national anthem, instead of standing out on the court with everyone else. What does that have to do with his career? A lot of people don't feel as strongly about the national anthem as others.
Also, I believe the Blazers will be able to recover any salary owed Roy from their insurance.
I hate to see anyone have their career ended this way.
By the way, maybe the national anthem isn't as important to Roy as some others, but a person has to accept that some people will be offended, some seriously, if you don't show any respect for the anthem and the flag. If he's okay with losing some fans over it, then no problem for me personally. I won't say more. Too political.
I happen to stand for the Candian flag and anthem, too, when the Raps are in town. I sing along, even. Born in Canada.

That's the thing. He didn't consider it a disrespect to go be by himself during the national anthem. I don't either. It was a "perception becomes reality" situation, and here, two years later, some people think "he refused to stand for the national anthem," which isn't at all what happened.
You're right, this is a touchy subject. I won't keep on it. Just saying I think the situation was misconstrued a bit.
This is a damn shame too. I remember when I heard that Minny traded Roy on draft night for Randy Foye, and I was thinking that Portland had gotten a steal. It really sucks that careers like Roy's and Yao's (not to mention Jay Williams) have been cut short because of lingering issues or terrible accidents
