BOS/MIN Trade (MERGED)

I think Wolves get better with this trade. They also pick up a first-rounder in exchange for two seconds. And Blount is an upgrade over Kandi. I don't quite understand what Boston liked about this though...

Well he's not really just a jumpshooter, he gets to the hole a lot.
77% of his attemps are jumpshots if I'm reading it correctly. That would make it about 12 out of 15 of his attemps, jumpshots. -82games.com

Wally and the R1 pick, also get rid of Blount's crazy contract so they have freedom to sign or re-sign people.

Finally getting out of young-PG-stacked-Boston, Marcus Banks in his Minny debut balled like a starter off the bench, and took away Jaric's minutes. Playing a big part in the take-off from his old team the Celtics, getting 20 pts (6-8 FG, 7-9 FT), 6 ast, 1 stl, and only 1 TO. Crowd loved it, and so did I. Hopefully now he can be at least near consistent, where-ever he is. Relating to rumors that he could be traded again, like to Seattle or Cleveland.

Mark Blount also played well off the bench with 16/10/4 (blk), and skipped up the court a few times after he made a bunch of shots against his old team.

Was a fun game to watch simply because the trade had just happened.

St. Paul Pioneer Press - The last thing Minnesota coach Dwayne Casey wants is for Marcus Banks to wind up on the fast track out of town. Banks, a point guard, was a less-heralded component of the trade. His name was in a ton of trade rumors before he wound up in Minnesota.

The speculation hasn't subsided since he arrived a couple of days ago.

"A lot of friends around the league are calling," Casey said after the lopsided win over Boston. "They want him."

So does Casey.

"I'm sure his name will come up," Casey said. "He has great value around the league. But I like him. He was the key to the trade, I think."

Even though he hasn't been here long, it's clear that he is by far the quickest point guard on the squad. In just more than 21 minutes Monday night, he scored 20 points and passed for six assists. He makes the Wolves' other point guards appear flat-footed.

"He is one of the quickest guys with the ball in the league," Casey said.

"I'm a basketball player," said Banks, who understands he might not have found a permanent home here. "I understand this is a business."

St. Paul Pioneer Press - The fans began Monday night by giving Wally Szczerbiak a standing ovation.

By halftime at Target Center, they were on their feet applauding the new-look Timberwolves.

Szczerbiak scored a game-high 22 points in his return after being traded Thursday to the Boston Celtics . But the Wolves dominated as their new acquisitions pushed them to a 19-point halftime lead en route to a 110-85 victory, the team's most lopsided win this season.

Marcus Banks showed in his Wolves debut that he is the quickest point guard the franchise has had in years. Banks, generously listed at 6 feet 2, darted and squirted his way to 20 points and six assists, season bests in both categories.

At least on this night, it was hard to tell why he lost his backup point-guard role with the Celtics before he was traded to Minnesota.

"I think the fans, when I got traded, they were like, 'Who is this guy?' " Banks said. "But I'm pretty sure the coaching staff knew what they were getting."

Great to read that, I had a feeling Casey would like Banks

“I want to take a look at Marcus,” said McHale, who got an eyeful of Banks at his best Monday. “He was someone I was very interested in coming out of UNLV. You know, it takes a while for point guards in our league, but the one thing he’s blessed with is just a phenomenal body and the ability to go where he wants to with the ball. The way they’re calling the game now, you can’t touch anybody out on the perimeter. So the ability to use the dribble to break people down is really a valuable asset, and he can do that. “I know Danny felt after the first summer league and the first part of training camp that Marcus was really going to develop quickly, but it’s not unusual that it’s taken him some time. It seems to take a little longer with point guards and centers.” Boston Herald

Man, Marcus Banks again, stole Jaric's minutes:

http://www.nba.com/games/20060203/MINPOR/boxscore.html

"Marko Jaric's hold on the Timberwolves' starting point guard position is weakening. In his strongest comments yet about the situation, coach Dwane Casey said he expects more passion from the organization's top free-agent signing last summer."

"We've got to have his passion, his hustle, his scrap," Casey said. "He didn't have that in the Detroit game. He didn't have that in the Boston game. Whatever the reason, the reasons are not important. We need him to compete and play with passion and to be a leader for our team. That's why we brought him in. "He's our starting point guard until he loses his job. That's the thing about the NBA — you've got to compete, hold onto it. The main thing is the passion. It's not the points or the shots missed or whatever. It's just playing hard, getting up, challenging shots."
