Blizzard Warning

I've been fighting a losing battle at work against the leaks in our 112-yr. old building, but the power is on, and I should make it through the day. Let's hope our ceiling doesn't cave in over the weekend!

Tough day today. I work in the DMV phone center and seems we spent the day telling people which offices were without power. All drive tests in the Sacramento (and other northern CA areas) had to be cancelled. Can you imagine a 16 yr old trying to get their license and having to drive around downed limbs, power lines, and trash cans.?

Our lights went out about 11 a.m. and came back on right at noon.

I have officially decided that I love our icky weather.

Acoording to weather.com, I'll be enjoying mild temperatures in the high 40's/low 50's next week in New York thanks to the yuck that's going on over here. My only other trip to New York was several years ago during this same week of January and there was a -12 wind chill almost the whole time.

And my power came back on finally about 20 minutes ago, after being out since about 7 a.m. Friday morning.

Trees are down, power lines are down, phone lines are down but thankfully there haven't been any reports of serious injuries to anyone.

Glad you are back up and running.

Anybody have damage? I was stupid enough to come to work on Friday. Yuba City to Oroville in awful weather, dodging debris. Power kept going out, phones went out. Surges fried some electrical wires and we had the fire department here. I finally went home at about 1:30. Got home and found part of my fence blown down. Power out about 12 hours or until 10 PM Friday night.

On Saturday, I had to get up on a ladder in the rain to unclog two of my downspouts. Wheeeee! Kept clearing out the storm drain.

Actually, I feel pretty lucky about my minor damage. Three of my assigned apartment complexes suffered damage. Trees on buildings, shingles all over, split awnings, rain inside apartments, fences down. The poor property supervisors are going to be really, really busy!

The side of my fence blew down. My neighbor came out and said "Your fence blew down my fence"....I mean what does it matter, who's fence blew down first, that fact is it needs to be repaired.

I called my landlord, and have him talked with my neighbor. By listening to their conversation, my neighbor doesn't want to cooperate.

Anyways, I just had minor damage. My neighbor across the street had a tree fall on top of his car.

My neighbor came out and said "Your fence blew down my fence"

I would of given him a blank stare and said, "Here's your sign!" or "Man, I told that fence last week to stop blowing, apparently it didn't listen." or "Did the fence huff and puff before blowing your fence down? I'm trying to establish malicious intent here."

:D

My neighbor is a female and she's not very friendly. In fact we don't get along. She wants things done her way and only her way. No comprise on her part. Its going to be interesting to see how she wants the fence to be repaired. My landlord wants it done one way and she the other way. Stay tuned.

I shouldn't have celebrated the return of power, since it went out Saturday night and wasn't restored - at least for now - until about an hour ago...

I'm wondering if I should have avoided my emails:

Well, this storm has been an adventure. Returning from a being out Friday a.m. in dress clothing we encountered two large trees down on our road. So we walked through the forest to the house--ruined the shoes. The ground was like a big sponge. Bud changed his clothes, grabbed his chain saw and was gone for several hours. Our power went out at 10:00 a.m. Friday. Saturday we discovered that our wiring to transformer was brought down by another tree and some of it in the pond. We started using the generator and Sunday night power came on with a bang--blew up a t.v. and several outlets. We turned off the generator and the surges kept coming. And then the alarm started--it is extremely loud--if you turned any switch or lamp--the alarm went off. Sometimes using the key pad would not stop it. And all this time, our lights are at half power. What a mess. We had already unplugged new HDTV, all appliances except micro, computers, etc. Well, the house became possessed and the lights and/or alarm went off until about 1:30 this morning. Bud left at 4:30 for the airport leaving the canned kitchen lights on. About 9:30 another surge blew every canned light in the house out and smoke came from all of them. PG&E told me to call the Fire Dept. and they were here 2 hours. Urggggh. Bud just got home--I read by windows durng the day and sat in the dark with a few candles for 4 hours. PG&E called and said power will return Friday between 6 and 8 p.m. 8 DAYS!!!! This is not fun.

What a mess Bud and Annie. So sorry. :(

Sorry to you, too, VF. Hope your stocked up.:(

Got someone coming to give me an estimate on fence repairs tomorrow afternoon...maybe in wind and rain. Other guy called and he is now booked 10 weeks out. I said I'd check back. One more called back, but I missed her and will call in the AM. All for stupid fencing. I'd probably have a heart attack dealing with your mess, Annie.

Crazy weather over here in Chicago area last few days to0. After snow and single digit temperature, we had 67 F yesterday. It felt like spring. And spring time equals tornado time and only for the second time in last 50 years we had tornadoes in January.

It's still rainy and warmish, but we should return to 30s soon and see some snow as early as tonight.

Please stay safe all of you. Sorry to hear about the power outages and messes, good luck getting it all cleaned up.

Well, it's a new day and things don't seem so bad. Really tired yesterday. I did tell Bud I would like to go to the game about noon! Ha! I so want to just get away for a while. Anyway, looking forward to the game tonight. Go Kings! Annie.

Having power back makes the whole world look good. Hoping I'll have power through this latest storm for the game tonight is my latest concern.

I think PG&E has done an unbelievable job in restoring as much service as they have. I've seen a lot of the damage that was done up here and it's almost miraculous they've been able to do as much as they have...

Wow! My thoughts are with all of you who have endured real challenges this past week. If I can help in any way, please let me know. I'm not sure what I can do from here, but I am willing and able.

Saturday was the best day ever on snow. I was flying through the woods on my powder specific board past skiers at mach 10. The snow was light and fluffy, it was truly beautiful. I love weather.

I just got the following email:

WESTERN PLUMAS COUNTY/LASSEN PARK-
950 PM PST TUE JAN 8 2008

...WINTER STORM WARNING IS CANCELLED...

That is good news for those of us up here who need a bit of time to dig out and regroup.

:)

Sounds wonderful! And hooray for the news, VF. :)

I'll try to get out tomorrow and get a few pictures. It should be absolutely gorgeous out there.
