Blizzard Warning

I received this notice a few minutes ago. Please, if you were planning on coming to the mountains this weekend, seriously consider putting it off. I've only seen three of these warnings in the years I've lived here and people take them VERY SERIOUSLY!!

Western Plumas County/Lassen Park-West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada-245 pm PST Wed Jan 2 2008

The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a blizzard warning...which is in effect from 4 am Friday to 4 am PST Saturday. The winter storm watch is no longer in effect.

The first in a series of storms is forecast to impact the Sierra Nevada late Thursday through Friday morning. A second more powerful storm will move through the Sierra Cascade range Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Snowfall amounts from 3 to 5 feet are expected over the Sierra Nevada between Thursday evening and Saturday morning above snow levels with several more feet of snow possible at the highest elevations. Snowfall is likely to accumulate at a rate of several inches per hour at times through the warning period...the heaviest snowfall expected Friday afternoon with the stronger second system.

In addition to the heavy snowfall...strong winds are expected. Wind speed gusts in excess of 65 mph are expected with the Thursday night system and wind speed gusts in excess of 100 mph possible on Friday afternoon with the second system. The combination of heavy snow and powerful wind will likely cause frequent whiteout conditions. Travel over the higher passes will be very difficult...if not impossible at times between Thursday evening and Saturday morning.

The wind and snow may decrease by mid day Saturday...but will not entirely end. A third...colder storm is expected to move over the area late Saturday into Sunday with a foot or more of additional snow possible.

Snow levels will begin around 5500 to 6000 Thursday night into Friday. Lower snow levels are expected Friday night into Saturday...from 3500 to 4500 feet. Even lower snow levels are forecast for Saturday night and Sunday.

A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout
conditions...making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must...have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded...stay with your vehicle.

Get plenty of wood inside; have lots of makings for hot soup; and take care of yourself, VF21.

The report I saw was much worse, more like 5-8 feet. 4 feet Friday and 3 feet Saturday alone. They are saying that it will be the biggest storm since 1995. BTW this was an official report that all resorts up here go by.

I am really excited.

I know you need the snow up there, Kingzrool. Just take care of yourself and your family.

Ditto that. For anyone that will get hit or have to travel in it.

Make sure you have a way to heat the soup, too! :D

Looks like your area is going to get more of a direct hit. The last time a storm like this came through was in about 1995. We were without power for 8 days up here with over four feet of snow and snow plows so overworked they couldn't keep the road up at all. Cross-country skis and snowmobiles were the only way to get around...

Any snow falling yet?

I keep getting the wind warning on weather.com, but maybe it hasn't picked up yet since it's pretty calm outside....

Batten the hatches VF21 and Kingzrool!!!

They are talking 3 inches of rain and near hurricane winds here, starting tonight, like D-Mass says. I really don't want to come to work in that. My 45 minute commute will be scary.:(

Everyone should prepared - not just those in the high country. Those of us in the lowlands need to be ready for power outages and possible flooding. Extra candles, batteries, blankets and nonperishables just in case!

Y'all stay safe!

Let the fun begin...

The wind hasn't kicked up yet, but the snow flakes are falling and by the size of them I would say it's the front edge of the storm coming into my area. (You generally get the really big snowflakes at the beginning and end...)

The temperature isn't dropping, though, so I expect the snow to move up the road before too long.

And now it's raining. No steady wind yet but a few impressive gusts. I am very happy I don't have to go anywhere.

We live on the Georgetown Divide and expect snow again on Sunday. We are stocked with groceries, wood is in and the books are waiting to be read. We did have a snow for one day and night over Christmas--it was beautiful. But, again, a mountain lion took down a big buck at the bottom of our driveway. Only the antlers were sticking out of the snow when we noticed. Lots of bucks stayed around this year after the rutting season and no one seems to know why. Anyway, we have a big generator if the power goes out. Do you have one, VF21? Annie.

Maybe the bucks hung around because true wintery weather took so long to arrive this year?

Stay safe and warm up there everyone. No real wind down here yet. Dawned on me about 10 PM to check the storm drain in front of my house. It was a little bit clogged with leaves and debris, so I cleared it. Then I noticed the one across the street was REALLY clogged up, so I cleared that one, too. My good deed for the day. :p

Well that and being extremely patient and pleasant at work while explaining to a couple of bozo clients for about the 500th time, in minute detail, how to do certain things that are a required part of their job. ;)

I think the majority of the big winds are supposed to come tonight and tomorrow.

Boy howdy are you right on that one.

I got to work at about 6:15 this morning, lost power briefly a few minutes ago, but obviously back on now.

This building seems to lose power fairly frequently in bad weather, so I'm not too sure I'm going to be here all day....

Just happened again. This doesn't bode well for being productive today. Maybe I can take work home and do my stuff there if this keeps up....

Winds were nasty on the road, kept trying to push my truck into the next lane. Had to go around a lot of trash cans and tree branchs in the middle of the streets, got to Mom & Dad's to drop the kids off and almost all the old fronds off their palm trees were in their driveway. that's kind of a deep stack.

It's nasty outside here in Stockton. I've got a few errands that I MUST take care of today before I go out of town on Sunday, but... I don't wanna. I just want to curl up with a cup of tea.

Power just came back on after being down for 2 hours. I had to take a shower by flashlight! Getting ready for work...but is the power on a work?
I work at SMUD...it should be. ;)

I'm in one of the only areas in Chico with power right now. The town is a complete mess with downed power lines and trees. Top winds speeds were clocked at 67 mph, but that's average for the area...Redding had wind speeds in the 80's. Yeesh!

Driving into work was really bad. I wish I could have taken the day off. Now, our building doesn't have power. I heard the surrounding areas doesn't have power either. Man, I wish I would have stayed home.

Power seems to be out everywhere in the Sacramento area, except El Dorado Hills, where I work .

I hope everyone who lives in the mountains or higher elevation areas is safe.

Power went out at work for good at 7:15. I waited an hour and packed up and left. Power was out at home, too, and just came on a bit ago.

Yah, all the way to work this morning no lights were working (traffic wasn't bad though).. When I get to work we are on a generator GRRRRRR.. Oh well.. Even with th generator out power has gone off and on all morning.

I was at the office at 6:15 am, we lost power 6-7 times in about 50 minutes before it went off for good at 7:10....
