Benos performance Slovenian national team 2009

G-League
Hi guys.

Just wanted to give you an update on Benos play on the Slovenian national team. They are finishing the first part of the preparation for the Euro championships (the physical preparation) and are playing some friendly games.

First game against team Macedonia (not so strong of a team but a couple of good players) Beno did not play due some groin pains (and the fact that the head coach is resting some key players).

Beno started in the second game (it is on as I type this). He played cca 13 minutes and logged in about 5-6 assists (by nba count), one steal, 2 rebounds and 4 points (2-5 shooting though) and one turnover. He seems fresh and active so far on the court and is even rooting for his team from the bench.

He is playing a bit differently than with Kings. He actively drives to the basket, draws double team and passes to the open players, usually centers. So far it is working.

Will keep you posted (I don't think he will be returning to the game though as the coach is spreading the minutes equally between all 12 players).

... update. He went back in 4 minutes to the halftime. In a span of 30 seconds he hit a 3, got a steal and assisted for an easy layup. By the halftime he got one more assist, on rebound and one turnover.

...3rd Q. Couple of points, couple of assists, one rebound and two turnovers (one almost being a nice assist but a bit to strong for our center to catch). Did some time as a SG as well. Nothing special. He was still quite active, with and without the ball.

... 4th Q. Played some PG and some SG. Couple of more points, a steal but no new assist.

Official stats: 12 points, 3 reb, 9 assists (euro stats). He would probably be credited with 12-13 assists by NBA standards. No logs about turnovers but I counted 4 (one bad dribbling, one pass to the crowd :), one pass to strong and he slipped on the wet floor once). 3 steals by my count as well.

All in all he was quite active, did surprise me with the high assist count. But truth to be told he has one of the strongest (arguably strongest) front court in forthcoming EU championships. So they do know what to do with the ball. On the other hand the Macedonian team is really not a team I would feel comfortable doing benchmark and comparison with.

There are still 11 upcoming friendly games and the whole EU championship so I will get you updates.

Actually, I remember him saying he wont be playing for the national team...

Okay. So today is #3 preparation game for Slovenian national team. They have concluded the physical preparation and now, slowly they are working on the defensive and offensive schemes.

They had an open training today in Ljubljana, but mostly they just played with the ball, bit one on one, some basic offense and defense (just to please the crowd).

Today and tomorrow they are playing the Russian team. Despite being without their stars Kirilenko and Holden they should prove a much harder team to beat in comparison to Macedonia. Some tougher opposition for Beno as well. It is still early in the preparation cycle so I do not expect a great and fluid game but I am looking forward to some good pick and rolls as Beno has a couple of great big guys to play off.

Still no word if Beno will be playing though, as said the head coach rotates 12 guys per game out of 15, so 3 are always resting. Only Vujacic is confirmed not to play in todays game so far.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks for the updates, gvucko. (And sorry if your thread got hijacked along the way...)

BTW, big thanks for the heads-up concerning the Eurobasket, I would've completely missed it, most likely. Only live TV basketball this year, for me.

Start of the game #3 preparation game for EU Bball championship. Slo vs. Russia:

1st Q: Did not start. Slovenija started Jaka Lakovic at PG, starting PG for Barcelona Bball team. Beno did not enter the game in the first Q. At PG first Jaka Lakovic, he was replaced by Goran Dragic (Phoenix Suns) 4 minutes left in first.

2nd Q: Did not start in 2nd. Dragic replaced by Lakovic @ PG. No Beno in second Q either.

........

Just got the confirmation. Beno will not be playing tonight. No injuries, just resting. So I will be back posting on tomorrows game.

Thanks, gvucko! It is good to know what is happening with Beno. It's looking like he has a lot of work to do. I just hope he wants to compete.

Note: I split the Beno/Tyreke discussion off into its own thread so we can keep this one about the OP, Beno and the Slovenian National Team.

:)

Beno has problems with groin injury and will not play tomorrow either! He will be back for game vs Croatia on saturday!

There are some mixed prediction about Beno playing tonight. Some say yes, others no.

I have contacted my friend who was the physical trainer for the national team before and he said that there is no definite confirmation about Benos playing and not playing.

Will be back in few hours with live update. Cheers.

Gee, does this sound familiar? I'm starting to think that Beno is a chronic injury just waiting to happen. You know, I don't have any facts or info as to why he always seems to be injured with some little nagging thing. But I do know that it was reported that last year when he reported to camp he was out of shape. And I also know that players that are out of shape tend to aquire injuries more often than players that are in shape.

However, he just came off an NBA season, so one would think that he would have to be in shape. Maybe he's just injury prone. Either way, it doesn't help the situation.

Do not want to be the advocate for Beno but I believe the situation here is more complex. Slovenia is arguably the most talented team, second only to Spain in upcoming EU championships. And as theese are just friendlies, we do not want to injure key players. And Beno is a key player for us.

Having a good result is mandatory for this team.

I still remember Beno being injured by a rough play against Hungarian team player prior to EU champ in Belgrade a couple of years ago.

It is similar with Vujacic (albeit his injury seems a bit more serious) and our hart and soul of the team Matjaz Smodis (with some back problems).

I am sure if this was a championship game all guys will be playing.

Confirmation. Beno (along with Vujacic and Smodis) will not be playing tonight.

Next game, back to back with Croatia in a week. Will update you with any news.

I personally want to know what Beno’s workout schedule is like (calling Sacramento Bee – here’s a great story for you). He seems like he doesn’t do enough to keep himself into shape and staying away from injury. If he does have a groin injury I hope he doesn’t push himself too hard. He should rest it for a while and get better. That’s something he shouldn’t mess with.

That being said I really hope he comes into camp in shape and healthy and ready to prove himself. I don’t want the same thing to happen as last year….He seemed like he was playing well for the Slovenian National Team.

Thanks for the updates on Beno.

You know, the great thing about Beno is when he had his "career year", he was traded to Minny and then released, picked up off waivers by the Kings. How much training he did during that time period is pretty obviously NOTHING, yet he had a journeyman type season which was his best yet. He's a ringer.

All I know is that I'd sure like to get the "worker's comp" that he's getting!

Beno is doing some therapies and will miss first match vs Croatia on Saturday, but will play for sure on Sunday! I spoke to him and he doesn`t want to rush and he wants to make this groin pain go away completely!

Three interesting, back to back, friendlies comming up.

18th of August Slo vs. Lithuania @ 9:15 AM LA time;
19th Slo vs Spain @ 11:30 AM LA time;
20th Slo vs Great Britain @ 9:15 AM LA time.

The game vs Spain should be a treat. Beno is expected to play (and so is Rubio ...for those guys who are still sad...)

Will keep you up to date.

Any idea what TV service will show these games? or Euro Champ games?

There are broadcasts available from Slovenian TV, but they involve using proxys, etc. and we're not going to post the links.

Interview with Beno about the EU 2009

Rough translation from the website of Slovenian national TV:

After a fortnight of sick leave Beno Udrich is returning to the national basketball team to play at tournament in Seville, Spain. His warning before the Euro Championship in Poland is: "Selfishness always destroys the game".

The 27 years old PG has obviously overcome the troubles with injured grouin so the head coach Jure Zdovc can count on him again. Beno has returned to play for the national team after three years of absence. He last played for Slovenia in the World champiopnship in Japan 2006.

What is it like playing for the NT after almost three years?
The feeling is great. The guys in the team are great, we get along. We always have.

You played only in the second game against team Macedonia. What is the status on your injury?
It is definitely better. I am still visiting therapy on the daily basis and am steadily getting back in the rhythm. I had injury on my iliopsoas. I will join the team in Spain, we will see how it goes there.

Regardless, you are observing the team from the bench. Do you see any progress in the teams play?
You can see that we get better every game. We haven't see each other for quite some time, playing for our clubs, now we are together again. There was the conditioning first so we couldn't prepare playing the ball very well. Now you can see that we are getting better.

You like to emphasize that Slovenian NT had achieved the set goals on the previous championships but that the goals were set to low. How about the goal this year - the medal?
I have been saying it all along. We did achieved the goals but they were to low especially if you look at the names of the players we always had in the NT. And we never got the cream on the cake. This year we set our goals high and we will do everything to get it.

The first round in the Eu in Poland will be hard. How will you play to be successful against Serbia, Spain and Great Britain?
We will do it game by game. First against GB, then the other two witch are stronger. We know we will have strong support from the crowd. And we will play our best.

What is the crucial thing in Slovenian play that can determine the success/failure?
Selfishness always destroys the game. Basketball is a team sport. Three games in three nights will be tough. In every game someone else will be the best player. Nobody know who will that be. But we hope that the whole team will join those players and we will all play good.

What part of the game is coach Zdovc emphasizing on? He was known as a great defensive specialist in his days of playing?
From the first day the team got together he is saying: defense first, offense second. We have very good offensive players in the NT but the winners of the championships are mostly defensive teams. We all agree with his mentality, we will sweat in the defense, the offense will come.

How do you see your role in this team. Last year, before you returned to NBA, you said that you are good enough to start at PG. What if coach Zdovc says otherwise?
It is up to him. He is the coach, I am here to adjust to his vision and opinion. The sedhule will be tough and it will be up to him who will start in first, second and third game. The first two will be the most important. If we won them we can afford a mistake in the third. But we will play to win them all.

Your Sacramento Kings had only 17 wins out of 82 games last (miserable) season. The changes in the team already began by the arrival of the new coach. Will they be affecting you to?
I don't know. But the last season was very bad, yes. After the end of the season, actually last month of the season I was already concentrating on the play with the national team. I have put the bad season behind me, now it is time for the national team. I have had no special news from the Sacramento.

I understand being patriotic and wanting to represent your nation, but I have to say it bothers me that he was thinking about playing for his national team instead of playing for the Kings for the last month of the season. I don't care how bad the season is, I expect the players to be focusing on the Kings for 82 games (not checking out for the last month).

You should take this with a grain of salt. He just said what T-shirt buying Slovenian fans needed to hear.

No Beno in today game against Lithuania as well. He was warming up with the team though. More updates tomorrow.
