Hi guys.
Just wanted to give you an update on Benos play on the Slovenian national team. They are finishing the first part of the preparation for the Euro championships (the physical preparation) and are playing some friendly games.
First game against team Macedonia (not so strong of a team but a couple of good players) Beno did not play due some groin pains (and the fact that the head coach is resting some key players).
Beno started in the second game (it is on as I type this). He played cca 13 minutes and logged in about 5-6 assists (by nba count), one steal, 2 rebounds and 4 points (2-5 shooting though) and one turnover. He seems fresh and active so far on the court and is even rooting for his team from the bench.
He is playing a bit differently than with Kings. He actively drives to the basket, draws double team and passes to the open players, usually centers. So far it is working.
Will keep you posted (I don't think he will be returning to the game though as the coach is spreading the minutes equally between all 12 players).
... update. He went back in 4 minutes to the halftime. In a span of 30 seconds he hit a 3, got a steal and assisted for an easy layup. By the halftime he got one more assist, on rebound and one turnover.
...3rd Q. Couple of points, couple of assists, one rebound and two turnovers (one almost being a nice assist but a bit to strong for our center to catch). Did some time as a SG as well. Nothing special. He was still quite active, with and without the ball.
... 4th Q. Played some PG and some SG. Couple of more points, a steal but no new assist.
Official stats: 12 points, 3 reb, 9 assists (euro stats). He would probably be credited with 12-13 assists by NBA standards. No logs about turnovers but I counted 4 (one bad dribbling, one pass to the crowd
, one pass to strong and he slipped on the wet floor once). 3 steals by my count as well.
All in all he was quite active, did surprise me with the high assist count. But truth to be told he has one of the strongest (arguably strongest) front court in forthcoming EU championships. So they do know what to do with the ball. On the other hand the Macedonian team is really not a team I would feel comfortable doing benchmark and comparison with.
There are still 11 upcoming friendly games and the whole EU championship so I will get you updates.
