Ben McLemore - should we have kept him? (split)

Was it dumb to let Ben McLemore go "for nothing?"

Agree completely. And it was dumb to let Ben go for nothing too (especially if you were not really sold on Malachai - as we now know they were not). Didn't Ben score 20+ against us this year? The "Revenge of the Former Kings" is reason enough to keep guys like that until they acquire some trade value. Ben got jacked around constantly, position to position, few minutes one night, many the next, none for three games after that and never complained - he should have been re-signed at what would have been very favorable numbers.

Ben had zero trade value and he's still garbage now. Not sure why you're acting like we missed out on something. Even signing him for minimum wage would be pointless.

A few of us were in favour of shipping him even during his rookie season while he still had some value before teams caught up to the fact that he really was not good.

People lost their crap when Petrie traded Thomas Robinson for Patrick Patterson. Petrie knew we stuffed up the pick and he cashed in on it as much as he could. He wanted Lillard but Maloofs wanted Robinson in case JT bolted during FA.

Perhaps they should bring Jeff back as a consultant.

The Kings tried to trade him and didn't get any bites. At some point you cut your losses and move on. You can make a case that they should've traded him a year earlier, but thatis a different argument IMO.

Ben was awful his entire stint here. He should have been traded his rookie year, but hindsight is 20/20. I have not thought about Ben since he was traded. I'm surprised he's still in the league to be honest. He lost the little trade value he had when Kawhi stole his manhood that one game.

Ben is poo-poo. But OP is onto something here, maybe we could sign guys to 10 day contracts against the last team that cut them and then waive afterwards.

Don't hold your breath. Geoff Petrie has pretty much dropped off the BB map, most likely enjoying his retirement. Vivek fired him so he could bring in Pete D'Allesandro. I doubt if Petrie has any interest in working for Vivek again in any capacity.

Hells bells, Kings choose McLemore #7 2013 NBA Draft with Vivek squealing, fist pumping in war room! Could instead had The Greek Freak who went #15!!! And Kings knew about Giannis having scouted him. Probably as good or better inside connection than most NBA franchises with Greek-Serbian success before in draft. Just another horrible pick, another horrible missed opportunity among so many. If anyone saw tonight's CBS 60 Minutes on The Greek Freak will know exactly what talking about when scouted as 18 year old - heavily by "20 NBA teams." Can view online here:

To rub salt into the wounds, on the way out the door Geoff Petrie left all the scouting folios for the incoming front office types with the recommendations to draft "the greek kid". PDA and his pimps picked McLemore.

I believe his description of Vivek was " A dismissive little chap"

As much as im thankful for the team Petrie built in early 2000s, he had plenty of years of straight misses and terrible trades made under his name. The picks of Mr. Jimmer and T Rob were 2 jewels that would have made it very hard for any new owner to keep you around. Ive never heard any Petrie quotes that are derogatory in nature made about the Maloofs (who deserved it) yet he has no problem being incredibly disreapectful to a man that has done a crapload more in life than the party boy Maloofs who only inherited (and squandered) their daddys wealth.

When you factor in the combination of new ownership almost ALWAYS cleaning house, especially when buying a dumpster fire of a franchise, and Petries previous few year track record, its no mystery why Petrie was let go. That he needs to make little comments on his way out the door to belittle Vivek speaks more volumns about Petrie than anything. Hope he is still aore from the door hitting him on the way out.

Actually, it would have been wise to retain Petrie for at least one year until you had a chance to get your furniture organized. Vivek was too quick to make a clean sweep of things and ended up throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Petrie did stick around to help organize some of the predraft workouts though.

I'd of paid Geoff whatever it took to stay.

This thread was one of a number of threads/posts made by a former member who seemed to want to stir the pot at every opportunity. He has since left the building so I'm closing the thread.
