What is a "fan"?

A fan is by definition "an enthusiastic devotee or admirer of a sport, celebrity, etc..." We here are Kings fans. We are enthusiastic devotees or admirers of the Sacramento Kings.

I am a fan when the team wins. I am a fan when the team loses. I've mentioned it in other threads and everyone should know: I LOVE THIS TEAM!

To me, being a fan is like being a parent. You accept a certain responsibility to be there through thick and thin. That's just part of the obligation a fan takes on in exchange for being able to root for their favorite team. A player also has certain obligations - like showing up fit to play, adhering to the rules, putting forth an effort every night, etc.

Players make no guarantees that they will win every night. How can they? Fans make no guarantee that they'll be happy with the outcome of every game. That's not possible, either.

Our team has just gone through a pretty rough stretch. They aren't happy about it. How could they be? They are proud young men who want to win. They want to do their best. They want to please the fans. If anything, they are actually going to be harder on themselves than most of us are.

If you're critical of how things are going right now, you're not alone. Our team has problems they must address - and address quickly. Talking about those problems and how we think the team should go about solving them is one of the reasons message boards exist. We may not always agree and some people may be more forceful and more angry than others, but criticisms founded in honest assessment of the game and the players are part and parcel of what this board and any other successful board is all about.

Argue about what we can and can't do all you want. Discuss what the weaknesses are and how you think they should be addressed. Even post the trade threads to your heart's desire. Boy, I can't believe I just said that. ;)

On the other hand, there are a FEW people who seem to only show up when things are going bad. They aren't just critical; they make comments that are nothing more than baseless attacks on one player or another. They are, IMHO, thinly disguised hate.

Just for the record, kingsfans.com is NOT going to dissolve into personal attacks against a player or a member of this board, flamefests, etc. We are not that kind of board and we're not going to go down that road. Make critical comments and express your frustration but do not resort to character assassination of our players; do not attempt to bypass the profanity filters; do not post insults of other members of this board. Those things are simply not going to be tolerated.

We're all frustrated right now. Those of us who have been around for the whole 20 years probably aren't quite as frustrated because we've been through worse times than this. Those of you who are newer fans are suffering through a true slump for the first time. There is light at the end of the tunnel. The Kings are STILL a very good team.

We CAN and we will get through this slump. We are KINGSFANS!

GO KINGS!!!!!

Word.

You guys really aren't used to losing lately are you? ;)

But I guess that is something to cherish. Losing is something that we have all had to deal with at some point. Just remember that you could be a Hawks or Hornets fan.

the all-star break for Kings fans used to mean getting ready for the draft. Scouting college players and the start of our prayers that the right bounce of the ping-pong ball will land us the top pick.

NOW, it's all about the playoffs and fine tuning the team with a trade or just standing pat and seeing what we can do. The stretch run towards the playoffs now begins. It's great to be a Kings fan!

Good point, zeke. It really hasn't been all that long since we were worried about whether we would get top pick. Oh, how times have changed.

I figure if I could handle losses of the lean years (and there were certainly many), then this little slump is a piece of cake. I forget that there are many new fans who don't know what it is like to lose in bunches like this.

So, let's see what the post all-star break brings us. Either way...

I Love These Kings!!

VF, Very well said. I think alot of folks forget what this team was like back, say 85-95. They could not get out of their own way. These last few years we have been somewhat spolied with our team. They certaintly have given us alot of exciting times with ther play. I think we have been taken to edge so many times. When Webb threw up that 3 at the end of last years playoff game against the Wolves sums it all up. Right to the edge of going to the next level. This forum is for letting our feelings out be it good or bad and within the rules. Kings fans are the best in the world. I'm proud to be one, and happy to share it with everyone here.

I don't think a lot of fans knew how it was then. The wagon wasn't in town during the bad years.
But, BW, it must have been. That is when I got on. :)

Ooops!! My mistake. We weren't so bad in 1985. :D

OK, I've done my part. New Kings socks to wear on game day, because all the pairs I have currently have holes in the toes (kind of like the defense;) ) New flag for the car, because the other one was getting ratty. New Logo for the back window, this one much bigger (the one I have now, the lances and tip of the crown had worn off) Break from basketball by not watching the All-Star game, check. Yep, think I am geared up for the home stretch!

Good post.

We all have our own way of dealing with these tough times, I guess. Think I wouldn't really be a true fan if I didn't feel some real disappointment. I've only been a fan for five years; I didn't watch too much b-ball at all before that - though I played the game as a kid. The beauty of the NBA is regular season play serves to gear up teams for the playoffs where anything can happen, I've been watching long enough to see that truth!

I find myself trying to keep my trap shut when I get disappointed, better to say nothing sometimes than unleash negative emotional outbursts. But discussion about possible adjustments I always relish, good way to learn more about the game.

The Kings have what it takes to win, and in the end it's all about the team. Just a little bit down, but that's okay. As long as the guys can gut it out (and I'm confident they can), I'll gut it out with 'em.

GO KINGS!!! :D

Best thread I've seen these last few days, VF21! And I'm with ya on that.

Of course, like everyone else, I can't help the disappointment over the recent turn of events with the team struggling (confounded by all the misdirected negativity and low attacks that I've been reading), but I can't even begin to consider turning my back on this team. I will stand up and pitch camp when others are ready to pack up and walk away. Like all the loyal people over here, I have faith and although it is tested time and again, I have held on to it and it can only gain strength... We know that things won't always go our way - and it is a given that we deal with it differently - but I believe that it is times like these when the team needs the support more and that is where we come in. We should not let up. I am not being idealistic, but I believe that if there is anything we can do at this point, it is to be who we claim to be - fans - who can and will keep up the fervent support and will remain united under a single banner. Besides, as mentioned in a separate thread, I am assuming that we are here for the same reason, aren't we?

I've always said that I love my sports with a passion, and top of that list is the Sacramento Kings.

GO KINGS !

That is a great posting/thread VF21. I agree completely. It is the unconditional love that we give to the team. No two ways about - that is what being a fan is all about: You give your love uncoditionally.

I would just like to add that Kings are special case. They actually deserve all the fandom that is on display on this forum. Most of us haven't grown up with the Kings, most of us have no connection to the area, this team actually earned it. Yes, they may have earned some extra fans by the way of international players, but in the end of the day this team has kept us all on the tippy toes for the last 4-5-6 years becasue they have been so GREAT. Many a lifelong Kings fan has been formed by this team's exploits in the last 4-5 years. There is no going back:

I LOVE THIS TEAM.

Good point.

I grew up loving basketball because I was a fan of the game, not of any one team. In fact, I always thought that people who rooted for a particular team so emphatically were kind of silly.

Then, a few years ago I caught a few Kings games. Now, I don't know how, and I don't know why, but by the fifth game I watched, I was hooked.

yeah.. i'm a kingsfan win or lose!

i think the nets "fans" (who didn't even know k-mart was already traded) were getting pissed at me for always cheering on the kings at every possession, and then chanting "DE-FENSE" on the other end.. so when they were finally winning, that's the time they started cheering.. and then they wanted to just rub it in my face by calling the kings names and stuff..

so i stood up, cheered till the end.. and by the end, i shouted "win or lose, i love you guys!" then i said "it's all about having fun!" so the nets "fans" just shut up..

**these nets fans are actually adults already.. so wow.. thanks for trying your best to give a 16 yr-old girl like me have a bad time.. sorry it didn't work ;)

I agree, VF!!

For me, being a hardcore fan of a team, means loving the team unconditionally.
If you are only going to support a team when they's winning then what's the point, really. You might as well cheer for a different team every season, depending on who the current champion is.

GO KINGS!!!!!

new to the forums and Kings fan, win or loose (as much as it hurts when they loose)

on a side noite, we finally got some national recognition, one of the models in the new sports illustrated swim suit edition is wearing a painted Kings jersey.
