Once again, the scribbled-on, tattered piece of paper known as the Kings' coaching list is being amended.

According to numerous sources, New Mexico State coach and former Kings player Reggie Theus and Lakers assistant Brian Shaw are expected to receive second interviews. And with San Antonio in position to sweep Cleveland in the NBA Finals tonight, it also appears Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo will be interviewed.

Shaw's interview will be Friday in Las Vegas. It is not yet known when Theus' will take place, though he did confirm he has been contacted about a follow-up. The sources did not want to speak on the record because of the ongoing hiring process.

Until now, Theus and Shaw appeared to be crossed off the list, as only Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis, new Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy and Kings assistant Scott Brooks were called for follow-ups. Carlesimo, a former head coach at Portland and Golden State, is in play for the Kings and Seattle openings. The Sonics recently hired former Spurs vice president Sam Presti as general manager, and it has been speculated he will hire Carlesimo.

On the draft front, the Kings -- who pick No. 10 on June 28 -- worked out UNLV guard Kevin Kruger on Tuesday and observed Chinese big man Yi Jianlian in Los Angeles on Wednesday. They are expected to host former LSU forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis today in Sacramento, followed by a workout with Florida forward Joakim Noah and Washington center Spencer Hawes on Friday.

I like the idea of getting Shaw. He's played with Larry Bird, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, Shaq, and Kobe. He's been an assistant for Phil Jackson and he was a good role playing PG with a lot of championship experience. I don't really like the idea of Theus but whatever. I really like Shaw though.

Oh good lord.

Yes of course. Its the process. Check and double check. Glad in a way. Shaw is a good candidate at least. Reggie just wants to make commericals and sell hair care products. But damn if it doesn't look like we just have no clue and are just meandering about looking under rocks.

Exactly.

It's no secret that I really like Reggie Theus and think he could be a good NBA coach but this is just starting to be like a long-running joke that quit being funny after about the first 20 times.

Poop or get off the pot!!!

;)

This is laughable! I mean seriously, are we going to invite every one of the 1st round interviewees back for the 2nd interview then eliminate 1. Invite the rest for the 3rd interviews and go on like that until we have one man left standing

This whole process is pretty much telling us that we don't know what we are doing or what we really want out of the coach.

For goodness sake, interview someone else outside that list and then make up your mind on who you want to be the coach of this franchise. The way we are going, we are not going to have a coach for the start of the season, let alone the training camp

I like the fact that they are doing there homework and the only reason they bring these guys back for second interviews is so the Maloofs can meet with them this time because the first interview was just with Petrie. What is wrong with doing your "homework" and interviewing these guys for a second time and making sure you go over everything and that you get the guy you want?

Oh geez!!!

Okay, MS&E, even I know that you decide which direction you want to take the team; what kind of players you are looking to get; where you're emphasis is going to be; and, then you go out and get the best coach available to fit all that.

Oh, no! Let's just wait until the cream of the crop has all gone elsewhere.

For God's sake, GET IT DONE!!!

If Shaw's the guy I'm fine. If Theus is the guy I'd be seriously upset. College coaches do not work. They just don't.

But anyway, just get it over with!!!

Since the Kings are in a rebuilding mode and if we are going to win at least 25 games next season, I want to be entertained. However, if the Kings do hire PJ Carlisimo, do you know how "slow" the game is going to be? Try boring. 25 games + boring = not a very happy Kings fan.

Honestly, is this being filmed for some "NBA Coaching Idol" show on ESPN we don't know about yet?

The panel must be Joe, Gavin, Bozo, Geoff, and Aileen Voison.

Are we sure that Maloofs are not making this hiring "process" into a reality show, with elimination rounds and stuff. Do we get a vote? When is it on, I want to Tivo it and save if as something to watch when we are mathematically eliminated from play offs around all star break due to another craptacular off season....

Reggie Theus Meets The Maloofs In Vegas For His 2nd Interview (PART I)

Joe: Hiya Geoff! Who do you have for us today?
Geoff: Joe, Gavin, I'd like to introduce you to Reggie Theus.
Gavin: Hi Reggie...do you mind if I just call you Reg?
Reggie: Reg is just fine guys. Sure is a spectacular place you have here.
Joe: Why thank you Reg. Say, would you like a job?
Reggie: That's why I'm here guys.
Gavin: That's great! We always like to hire guys who like us! You can start on Table 12 tommorow.
Reggie: Excuse me?
Joe: Ok.
Reggie: What?
Joe: You're excused.
Reggie: Um...does that mean I got the job?
Gavin: Sure.
Reggie: Great! So...um....we'll need a press conference right?
Gavin: For what?
Reggie: For the job.
Gavin: Oh that. Nah...I think just show up will be enough.
Joe: We do like press conferences though.
Gavin: And interviews.
Joe: Yeah, interviews are cool.
Reggie: Wait...where should I show up?
Gavin: Table 12 dummy. Gee, this is not the way to impress your new employer.
Reggie: But...wait...I was here about the Kings job.
Joe: The what?
Reggie: The job coaching the Kings?
Gavin: The Kings? Hey did you know we own them?
Reggie:.....uh...yeah?
Gavin: Cool, huh?
Joe: So have you ever had a million dollar value meal?
Reggie: What??
Gavin: They're cool.
Reggie: Listen...guys, about the Kings job.
Joe: What?
Reggie: THE KINGS JOB.
Gavin: We own them you know.
Reggie: YES I KNOW!!
Joe: There's no need to shout. Jeesh.
Gavin: Look at Geoff, he never shouts. Right Geoff?
Geoff: Huh?
Gavin: See?
Joe: Now what was it you wanted again?

cont...

Reggie: I am here to interview for...the...Sacramento...Kings...coaching...job.
Joe: Oh that! We already have a coach.
Geoff: No we don't.
Joe: We don't?
Geoff: No.
Joe: Oh.
Gavin: Wait, whatever happened to that little guy?
Geoff: Muss.
Joe: Muss?
Geoff: yes.
Joe: Huh?
Reggie: Guys, the job?
Joe: What job?
Reggie: THE JOB COACHING THE KINGS.
Joe: Oh that.
Gavin: We own them you know.
Geoff: Guys, Reggie is here because he's interested in the job opening as head coach.
Joe: Yeah, I know that.
Gavin: Wait, I thought the little guy was head coach?
Geoff: No.
Gavin: No?
Geoff: No, we fired him.
Gavin: We did?
Geoff: Yes.
Gavin: That's too bad. We liked him.
Geoff: No.
Gavin: No?
Geoff: Not by the end.
Gavin: Oh. That's too bad.
Joe: He was young!
Gavin: Yeah, we like young guys!
Joe: Old guys smell funny.
Gavin: Yeah. Like that old guy we used to have as coach.
Joe: Yeah, Muss was a lot better.
Geoff: No.
Joe: What?
Geoff: Forget it.
Joe: What?
Reggie: About that job...
Gavin: We want to hire that porn star dude.
Geoff: He went to Orlando.
Gavin: Orlando?
Geoff: Yes.
Joe: I like Orlando. Its got Mickey Mouse.
Gavin: And Donald.
Joe: Yeah. But no gambling.
Gavin: Boo.
Reggie: Guys...
Gavin: Have you ever had a million dollar value meal Reg?
Reggie: No.
Gavin: Let's have one.
Reggie: Maybe later. I want to coach the Kings.
Gavin: We own them you know.
Joe: We already have a coach.
Reggie: No you don't.
Joe: We don't?
Reggie: No.
Joe: Oh.
Gavin: What about that young guy?
Geoff: Muss?
Gavin: No, not him. That other guy.
Joe: Yeah...his secretary or whatever.
Geoff: Scott Brooks?
Joe: Yeah him! We liked him.
Gavin: He was young.
Joe: We like young guys. they remind us of ourselves.
cont...

Reggie: Guys...with all due respect aren't you pushing 50?
Joe: No!
Gavin: No!
Geoff: yes you are.
Joe: Really?
Geoff: Yes.
Gavin: Oh. But we still get all the hot young chicks!
Geoff: Those are prostitutes.
Joe: Really?
Geoff: Yes.
Joe. Oh.
Gavin: Prostitutes are cool.
Reggie: Aaarrggh!
Joe: You ok Reg?
Reggie: No.
Gavin: No?
Reggie: Let's try this one...last....time. I WANT TO COACH THE KINGS.
Joe: Oh that! Why didn't you just say so!
Gavin: Yeah! When can you start?
Reggie: So I got the job?
Joe: Well...
Gavin: We have to talk over everything with the family.
Joe: Yeah. We make better decisions together.
Gavin: Yeah, like hiring that little guy.
Joe: Yeah, mom wanted him pretty bad.
Geoff: Actually she wanted Whiz.
Joe: Whiz?
Geoff: Yeah.
Joe: Oh.
Gavin: I remember Whiz! he used to give me lollipops when I was a kid!
Joe: Yeah, Whiz was cool.
Gavin: But then he got old.
Joe: Yeah. That sucked.
Reggie: Guys, plain and simple, what do I have to do to get you to hire me?
Gavin: Well...tell us about yourself.
Joe: Yeah, we're excellent judges of character.
Gavin: Yeah, if there's one thing we do well, its hire good people.
Joe: Yeah.
Reggie: Well, I am currently coaching college ball at New Mexico...
Joe: New Mexico!
Gavin: Hey! That's where we're from!
Reggie: Yeah, guys I know. You came to one of our games, remember?
Joe: We did?
Reggie: Yeah.
Joe: Oh.
Gavin: Well..that's cool Reg, but we don't really need a college coach. What about that Brooks guy Geoff?
cont...

Reggie: Wait...damnit, I played against that Brooks guy and kicked his *** every time.
Joe: Wait...you play?
Reggie: averaged 18ppg over my career.
Gavin: Well why didn't you say so!
Joe: Yeah, you want to come play for us. We need help.
Reggie: No...wait...I want to coach the team, not play.
Joe: Oh that. Are you qualified?
Reggie: Listen, I played in the league for 15 years...
Gavin: Really? Cool. where?
Reggie: Chicago, Orlando, Sacramento...
Joe: Sacramento?
Gavin: Hey, we own them you know.
Reggie: Yes!
Joe: Wait, I don't remember you playing for us.
Reggie: It was before you bought the team.
Joe: Before?
Reggie: Yeah.
Joe: Oh.
Gavin: Gee, you must be really old then!
Joe: We don't like old guys.
Gavin: Yeah, they smell funny.
Reggie: I'm no older than you guys.
Joe: Really?
Reggie: Yeah.
Gavin: Cool.
Joe: We own a basketball team you know.
Reggie: yes
Gavin: It didn't do well last year. That makes us mad.
Joe: Yeah, we like to win!
Gavin: We need more tall people. Like 7 footers.
Geoff: Actually the game is trending toward flexible, versatile, players. Specifically toward tweener forwards. The optimal height for all positions will soon be 6'7" tall.
Joe: Really?
Geoff: Yeah.
Gavin: Say...how tall are you Reg.
Reggie: 6'7".
Joe: Really? Want to come play center for us?
Gavin: We own the Kings you know.
Reggie: That's it, I'm outta here.

The End...until the next interview.

Oh good lord.

Yes of course. Its the process. Check and double check. Glad in a way. Shaw is a good candidate at least. Reggie just wants to make commericals and sell hair care products. But damn if it doesn't look like we just have no clue and are just meandering about looking under rocks.
Maybe. But IF (note BIG IF) sense can be made of this excrutiating process of searching, one possible answer is that the guy they really want is still coaching. So suddnely Shaw and PJ emerge from roumerville to front runner once The Spurs seal the deal. If this theory is right we can look for major activity in the next few days, unless a different Cavs team dresses out tonight.

Bricklayer, ya gotta second career in Hollywood script writing. That was LOL funny. Even funnier is that I can actually visualize that conversation unfolding. On second thought, is that funny or sad? ;)

A Laughable Process

Wow, I'm actually with the majority opinion here that the Kings have let this process turn into a joke. And no, it's not really a funny joke.

Shaw is, in my mind, a better candidate than Theus. I think you have to have NBA assistant coach experience in order to get your start as an NBA coach.

And, you know, the draft is coming up. How do you evaluate players without a coach in place? Now, I know some of you will say that's Petrie's job, and I suppose that's a fair observation.

In effect, I think the Maloofs have turned this into their decision. I think Petrie has probably already interviewed several people he'd hire, but when they have their phone conversation, or email exchange, or meeting, with the Maloofs, I think they're rejecting people Petrie would have been happy to hire. If that's true, it wouldn't surprise me if Petrie is getting very tired of the process.

Theus would be a mistake, but in a way, I'm in favor of it. If you're going to lose a lot of games, might as well become a laughingstock along the way.

I haven't said anything about this yet, but I think losing Elston Turner was a very negative development.

Joe, Gavin... Please leave the basketball decisions to the basketball people. Just run your business and get out. I see what happens with these guys... Believe it or not, I was actually at the Monarchs home opener, which was advertised as a sellout. What is the definition of a "sellout" in the WNBA? Is it 60% of tickets sold, or does 40% do it these days? Because that arena was NOT half full.

Why do I bring this up here? It gets to credibility, that's why. If they're going to as clearly lie about Monarchs attendance, what else are they lying about?

If Theus gets an interview, then it's ridiculous not to interview Cooper and Laimbeer in the women's league. Those guys, also ex-players with pedigrees much higher than Theus, have at least had the experience of coaching professionals, albeit the feminine variety.

If Shaw's the guy I'm fine. If Theus is the guy I'd be seriously upset. College coaches do not work. They just don't.

But anyway, just get it over with!!!

If Theus gets the job maybe he can hire Tisdale as an assistant and he can play his horn at the timeouts...

Since the Kings are in a rebuilding mode and if we are going to win at least 25 games next season, I want to be entertained. However, if the Kings do hire PJ Carlisimo, do you know how "slow" the game is going to be? Try boring. 25 games + boring = not a very happy Kings fan.

San Antonio isn't slow. If he has fast guys, he's not going to slow down the game. On the other hand, if Petrie keeps SAR and Miller and Salmons - yeah, we're going to have a very slow and boring team no matter who the coach is.

I'm just wondering why all is quiet on the Terry Porter front. I guess he's not going to be considered then?

What's interesting to me is that everyone is tired of this long process, yet there is no one candidate that any of us agree on. Maybe we all would have been okay with SVG, but it certainly wasn't everybody's first choice.

I suspect if it was really up to Geoff, this would be done by now. Honestly, I understand that owners should have some say, but to me it should only be to veto someone that they absolutely know they don't want and it better be a darn good, basketball-related reason.

They obviously get a say in salary, but I don't think that's a huge issue. They were willing to pay SVG. If P Jackson had really been available last summer, I think they would have paid him, too.

BTW, hysterically funny dialog, Brick! :D

Reggie Theus Meets The Maloofs In Vegas For His 2nd Interview (PART I)

A truly entertaining effort there, Brick, and laugh-out-loud funny.

Whatever you use as a source of inspiration, your... muse, for lack of a better term, must be one hell of a humdinger.

Either that, or you've been left with far too much time on your hands and no suitable distraction to help fill it.

What's interesting to me is that everyone is tired of this long process, yet there is no one candidate that any of us agree on. Maybe we all would have been okay with SVG, but it certainly wasn't everybody's first choice.

Good point. Now, let's just all agree not to hire the non-winning retread that is PJ and go from there. ;)

And Brick - wow. You outdid yourself with that one. Bravo! :D
