At the moment, Rick Adelman isn't sure who will start Tuesday night in a preseason opener against the Dallas Mavericks, when a week of training camp yields to an actual game.

For that matter, the Kings coach doesn't know who will get the ax, with the first cuts coming today after practice or after the Dallas contest. But he does know he has a pretty darn good roster, with some nice rewards.

For starters, no injuries of note. And, Adelman said, everyone has bought into the concept of passing.

"Everyone's been willing to share the ball, to do what we want to do," he said. "It's been a really good week. I know we have 11 guys who are solid players."

Adelman said he's anxious to see how the rotation works. Who emerges as the starting power forward remains a topic of intrigue. Is it Kenny Thomas, the returning starter, or newcomer Shareef Abdur-Rahim?

The first glimpse comes Tuesday. Both have had good camps. Both want the job.

"They're used to a certain amount of minutes and a role," Adelman said. "That's going to be my biggest problem ... It comes down to how the players accept (their roles). We have a good group. A player can't get caught up in if he doesn't start. Can he be an effective member of the team, a valuable member?"

And this spin.

"If you're a positive and you have a contract anyway, what else is there?" Adelman said. "You're making good money. You're on a good team. You're part of the success here.

"That's the bottom line, and if a guy doesn't accept that, it's not going to work."

Adelman said the thirst for minutes and roles go well beyond Thomas and Abdur-Rahim.

"There's probably going to be a couple of other guys who think they should be on the floor more (and they) may have more of a gripe," Adelman said. "But that's the way it is in this league, (players want to play). I think it'll all work out."

Lighter and better? - Erik Daniels saw time in 21 games last season for the Kings and didn't play in 35 others (coach's decision).

The 6-foot-8 forward lost 25 pounds from last season, down to his current 215, and he said he feels like he's earned a roster spot, even with the glut of forwards in front of him.

"I lost all those pounds sweating in a gym in Lexington this summer," the former Kentucky star said. "And I cut out a lot of fast food, fried food. It was tough. It was the first time I was on my own and I was used to going out and getting something fast to eat. Now there's a discipline." Adelman on scrimmages in general - "We've certainly seen some guys with some ability to do more than we've seen (in the past). Shareef can pass the ball, knows how to pass the ball. So does Bonzi. Kenny's passed it well. We have a lot of guys who are willing and can make plays."

Those are some interesting quotes from RA....basically laying down the law. :)

And hinting at things that might be an issue.

I've actually started to pay attention to Rick's training camp quotes the last few years. He actually has a tendency to in his own quiet way sort of sneak in real issues he's got going on. From the 03-04 warning about it being a different team, to the 04-05 warnings about defense, complacency, jsut amking the playoffs etc., ofttimes his little understated comments hint at icebergs he sees ahead.

Hopefully said icebergs are smart enough to be able to decipher the message, and if not that the GM will listen and react before things become a problem. With a new team with no real track record of success or long-standing chemistry, I think issues like that are more important than they were in years past when the core of the team was cohesive and could ignore a peripheral malcontent.

At this point, I think Adelman is going to put his foot down about some stuff...he received a lot of flak (deserved or not) for bowing to Webber in the past. I don't think anyone will be accusing him of anything like that this year.

I have this sneaking hunch we might even see him yell...

If Kenny Thomas is dying to have the starting job he must have something good to offer, i say give it a shot in the preseason.

Its an interesting situation. Reef gives you low post skill, and star quality. Kenny is one of the quickest and most athletic PF's in the league that can rebound and hit the 18 footer. Both provide something unique. I wouldn't be too shocked to see Kenny deserve the starting spot, but I would be surprised to see him get it. I just look at what he may be able to do from the bench in this situation and its too valuable. It may be the best for the team if he does come off the bench in a 6th man role.

We'll have to see what happends, Kenny had a great season last year, going by numbers and media Shareef deserves it but going by experience I would have to give K-9 the nod because he already knows the system, I would actually just split the minutes between him and SAR, untill SAR learns the system then move him into the starting spot.

I honestly think who every plays better defensively between the two should get the starting job. We already have enough offense in the other starting positions we must look at getting better defensively.

I think this is telling, too. Wonder who he is referring to. Corliss, maybe, if KT plays well enough to play the 3 and 4 backup? One or two of the new guards who won't get a lot of minutes? Sampson if Skinner stays healthy? Garcia as the rookie, with Martin seemong to impress?

Guards:
Bibby, Wells, Hart, Martin

Forwards:
Peja, SAR, KT, Corliss

Center:
Miller, Skinner

End of the bench:
Garcia, Price, Sampson, (Sandrin/Flores/Paulding)

That's already 11 and I really don't see RA playing that many guys most games, except for garbage minutes. Or am I off on this one?

Does anyone know who is the best of these guys Sandrin, Flores and Paulding? I'm hearing good things about alll of them.

The only sure thing is that our bench should be deep again. Some good talent this year all around. I'm excited for this season (with realistic expectations). Should be a fun year.

Sounds to me that he is puting kenny in his place, since from what i remember reading kenny was the one complaining to the media. I hope i see many games with kenny on the bench(I dont like him). I think the starting five is sure in my mind.

sharif
peja
boniz

I am willing to bet five big ones(I am talking about one abraham), that this is it. If anyone wants to contest this post I will up hold the bet, of course I expect the other better to uphold his end of the deal if i am right.:D

I'd say Paulding or Flores. Sandrin I don't know much about, just know he can dunk. I don't think there's too good of a chance of either three making the team.

I'd like to see one make it though.
