LAS VEGAS -- Louis Amundson is used to the cheers, the "Loooouuu" chants that come from the UNLV crowds. Now he's one step closer to hearing it from Kings fans.
The former UNLV forward was signed to a partially guaranteed contract by the Kings. The deal, according to his agent, Michael Higgins, pays him $75,000, with an invitation to training camp in October and the prospect of staying with the team even longer.

Amundson, the 6-foot-8, 225-pounder who was a fifth-year senior with the Rebels, went undrafted. The Kings, though, attempted to find a trade in the second round of the June 28 draft to bring him to town.
"I wasn't that surprised (to sign), because I knew they liked me," said Amundson, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the Kings' win over New Orleans on Friday.

"I don't know what to expect (in training camp), but I'm going to keep playing the way I'm playing and see what happens."

Down and out -- Francisco García flew back to Sacramento on Saturday to have his sore left foot X-rayed. The Kings' swingman will be seen by team physician Richard Marder.

Ron Artest is healthy, but he won't be at today's game against Toronto. Artest will be in Los Angeles, in the NBA-sponsored All-Star and celebrity basketball game at Staples Center. He will play in Monday's game.

Movin' Martin -- Before the Kings even left for Las Vegas, there was a good indication that Kevin Martin wouldn't be slowing down for summer league.

In the Kings' practice facility Wednesday, the Kings' shooting guard drove right, rose for a jump shot and was sent reeling.

He fell backward, his head ricocheting off of the floor. The bumps haven't stopped since.

Martin's latest came in Friday's opener, when he soared for a dunk and was crunched above the rim by two Minnesota defenders, leaving him with a bloody elbow.

"I was telling the guys today that that's when you know you've got hops," Martin said.

The all-out play is no coincidence, as Martin has been studying tapes of the league's pre-eminent hustling scorer, Miami's Dwyane Wade. Just like the NBA Finals MVP, Martin has been drawing fouls, with 21 of his 40 total points coming from the free-throw line.

Bubba's back -- Bubba Burrage, who was an assistant coach and advance scout under former Kings coach Rick Adelman, said he and Eric Musselman came to an unwritten agreement allowing him to return. Burrage, 34, had been with the Kings since his early 20s in varying capacities. Burrage said he will handle video scouting and work with the coaching staff.

a) Louis is 6'8"
b) he currently has no offensive game that will be effective in the NBA
c) so...roleplayer. And that's not a dirty word, especially when you are tlaking about young guys at the end of the bench. Might even be able to spot him in to get a little burst of energy, although I would think we would need to clear out several of the far more accomplished vets ahead of him to make that truly possible.

In any case, here are the contract details (ironically again found in somebody's else's newspaper, not the Bee) -- sounds like a good low risk deal for us, only $75,000 guaranteed, and options on years 2 & 3 if we want them:

Amundson deal finalized

Sacramento Kings forward Louis Amundson, an undrafted rookie from Nevada-Las Vegas and Louisville's Monarch High School, officially signed his contract Friday with the Kings.

Amundson said the contract next season is for the minimum rookie salary of $412,718, with $75,000 guaranteed. The contract, agreed to shortly after he was not drafted June 28, assures him of attending Sacramento’s training camp.

Amundson said the deal calls for the Kings to have team options for his second and third seasons. The options are for the minimums of $687,456 and 797,581.

"I feel really good," Amundson said Saturday. "I'm glad that it's out of the way."

Amundson has looked good in Sacramento's first Vegas Summer League games. He has averaged 14 points and 9.5 rebounds in 23.5 minutes while shooting 12-of-16. His energetic play has excited fans in the city where he played college ball.

"It's really been a good confidence builder," Amundson said. "It's kind of tough going out there for the first time."

Former University of Denver center Yemi Nicholson, also undrafted, has not had it so good. Nicholson did not play in Sacramento's first summer game, and scored two points on 0-of-2 shooting in five minutes in the second.

ETC. -- William Phillips, agent for Kings free-agent guard Bonzi Wells, met Saturday with Nuggets director of player personnel Mark Warkentien at the Vegas Summer League. The Nuggets are interested in Wells, but can't offer more than a five-year, $30 million deal. The Kings have offered Wells a five-year deal worth about $36 million, but Wells is holding out for more. Phillips declined comment. Warkentien said the Nuggets are doing "their due diligence." ...

(I left in the part about Bonzi just as an aside -- appears his agent is still beating the bushes looking for a bigger payday. Shooting an agent is still legal in the States right? ;) )

How much is Petrie Willing to give him for a contract? How much is reasonable?

That's being pretty thoroughly discussed in the various Bonzi threads...

As far as Amundson goes, I'm looking forward to seeing him in training camp.

Bubba's back -- Bubba Burrage, who was an assistant coach and advance scout under former Kings coach Rick Adelman, said he and Eric Musselman came to an unwritten agreement allowing him to return. Good to hear.
