Olympic snub irks Artest

Doug Haller

The last time Ron Artest came to Phoenix, he had "'Tru Warier" shaved into his hair.

Before the game, he stood in a hallway, dressed in a suit, talking on his cellphone. Teammates walked past on their way to loosen up. Artest kept talking, not entering the Pacers locker room until 30 minutes before tip-off.

On Friday, Artest returned to US Airways Center. His hair had grown, erasing the name of his record label. And this time, Artest entered the locker room on time, plopping next to rookie Francisco Garcia more than an hour before tip.

He said he's refreshed by his new job. After four years, it was time to leave Indiana and start fresh. He feels he can do that with Sacramento. He feels he can lead Kings to the playoffs, even though after Friday's loss they sit 11 games back in the Pacific Division.

Switching conferences wasn't all that big of a deal, Artest said. Teams like the Clippers play more of an Eastern Conference style. Teams like Milwaukee play more like a West Coast team. In the end, basketball is basketball. And no matter where he plays, Artest knows what he brings.

"A bunch of things," he said. "I do a lot. I don't do everything perfect, but I do a lot of things."

What he can't figure out is why USA Basketball hasn't extended an invitation to try out for the men's national team.

"How do you say his name? Collangelina?" Artest said, referring to national team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo. "I think (he thinks) I'm too hood for the Olympics. I'm too ghetto for the Olympics."

Artest is well aware of his reputation. He's the NBA's official bad boy. The guy who once asked for time off to promote a rap CD. The guy who charged into the stands in Detroit. The sour apple who asked to be traded from the Pacers.

The reputation follows him wherever he goes, and he seems fine with that.

"The media do what they do, and I do what I do," he said, later adding, "I am who I am."

Going into Friday night, he had averaged 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and three assists since coming to the Kings on Jan. 25 for Peja Stojakovic. The Kings are 4-4 with him after having a three-game winning streak snapped on Friday. Artest thinks that should count for something, as should all the teams that wanted his services.

"All I know is all the stars in the NBA, they want to play with me," Artest said. "The Kobe Bryants, the Kevin Garnetts, the Carmelo Anthonys, they all want to play with me, so why can't I play in the Olympics? I would like to, but they just want to hold me back."

:VF21 thinks very hard:

Nope, don't care about this article in any way, shape or form...

;)

I'd love to see Ron on Team USA, it'd be great. But I don't know if he makes it because of people (don't know if Colangelo is one of them, but we'll see) who hold onto things, despite a year and a half passing with him being fine. ;)

Collangelina...

Or perhaps the writer was trying a little too hard to find something controversial to write about Artest?

The headline writer was bad enough. Nowhere in the quotes does it look as though Ron is actually "irked."

Sure, I'm sure he would like to be on the Olympic team. You certainly cannot fault his competitive spirit.

Unfortunately, what's happened is the writer is trying to get Artest to say something that can be used to show he's still unstable or whatever. And I predict we're going to see more of this stuff, especially if Ron doesn't go nuts.

"The media do what they do, and I do what I do," he said, later adding, "I am who I am."

"Later adding"? Good lord. That means the writer blatantly combined quotes from different parts of the interview to make it sound different.

Not all media stoop to that level, as a matter of fact. Some just seem more prone to spinning quotes to fit their own needs than others...

He'd be good on team USA. It's not like he can ask to be traded to one of those european teams there or anything. All the stars want to play with Ron, and he is a top 15 nba player. Not to mention he's one of the stars that actually WANT to go. A lot of the NBA guys don't want to go, like Duncan or Jermaine O'neal or Tayshaun Prince or Garnett... They said no. Wouldn't it be good to have Ron and Brad there? They're two versatile players who actually want to represent the USA and they do a lot of things. Last time we had trouble with the zone played in international competition because we didn't have enough shooters. Ron and Brad, they can both shoot. Ron can defend, pass, rebound, shoot, postup, pretty much everything. Brad can shoot, pass, and grab a few boards. I just think that it'd be good for the olympic team to have guys who can do that stuff and that want to be there.

Calling Collangelo names isn't exactly the way you get yourself on the Olympic team.

Ron desperately needs somebody to do his public speaking for him. Maybe he could just have an official representative sitting in front of his locker after games to answer questions while he sneaks out the back door.

Probably not the right thing to do, though who knows how he said it. But I generally love his unique quotes and how he says things.

Maybe a translator to tell people what he "really" said. ;)

I think Artes said it himself why he shouldn't be representing the Nation. He is indeed too gheto or hood to represeting the nation.

No matter what, but its good to have him on the Kings

If US basketball wants to save face after last olympics "debacle" they send the best players over there regardless of their history. Look at Bode Miller and some of the jack *** things that guy has said, yet he still ski's for the US in Torino. Somebody needs to start a "Let Ron Play" petition for Colangelo. Personally, I think they will be too proud to let Ron on the team, but that's a mistake if you ask me.

I agree, a better way would have been to contact Colangelo about it and tell Colangelo that he is comitted 100% to playing basketball for the USA and nothing but. I just think that he should be on the team, although calling Colangelo "Colangellina" isn't going to accomplish that.

The Olympic Committee is famously staffed with famous (former?) Nazis and fascists, yet Ron Artest will besmirch the Olympic name?

Why not have Artest? He'd do a good job defensively, though I'm not sure if his offense will transfer to an International Rules setting. I would guess that much of the rest of the world won't mind Artest's past, given the much more severe sports riots in other parts of the world.

He might just need to go the route of other NBA players and somehow finangle the qualifications to play for another country.

^^Just a reminder? Let's keep the political comments out, okay? I know it's tempting but it just doesn't work around here. We don't talk politics and we don't talk religion and it just keep things a lot more civil.

This was a(n attempt to make a) mildly amusing joke in support of Artest. I make no jokes about politics and religion; I respect that rule. It makes sense.

No uncivil attempt intended here, and in my mind not even is there an appearance of incivility. In no way does that joke besmirch the dedication and accomplishment of countless Olympic athletes or their fans. My criticism is a matter of public record, though. A surprising percentage of Olympic committee members have creepy/shady pasts. Even worse than me.

Every now and then I see members insulting other members. Very rarely is there any sort of "warning" post such as this one to follow.

Go Kings and Artest!
