Another Coach Fired!! - Maurice Cheeks

I was actually expecting this. With the strong finish to the season last year for the 6ers combined with the Brand signing, everyone expected them to be a lock for the playoffs. But they just don't seem to have that same fire in them this season.

God, when are we going to follow suit? This is getting annoying seeing all the other teams doing the right thing while we sit here idly.

Why would we really fire Theus right now? He's getting kids minutes and improving our lottery chances (albeit in a sucky draft). Nobody expects him to be able to win especially with all of our injuries. He does seem to inspire hustle into our younger players as well.

With our team's expectations, I can not see firing Reggie as the smart move. This is his most difficult stretch, having avoided it largely last year I consider this his "Rookie Wall". Any other coach would give you about the same effort and intensity from this team. Which is what we all really want to see.

The other teams firing their coaches right now are acting pretty lame right now IMO. Many of the firings are really unjustified.

I've never been sold on Mo as a coach -- last year was the first time where you went, hmm, maybe they have something there. And this year there is no doubt that soemthing is amiss -- to be unable to score after not only adding Brand, but seeing Young emerge as well is just bizarre. Everybody else has taken a step back. Given the surprise playoff run last year thought Cheeks might have a little rope, but the performance this year has just sucked.

Theus is heading toward last bad coach standing status here.

Someone (I can't remember who... Hollinger?) had an insightful article that the problem with the Sixers was that they were struggling to incorporate Brand because they're just not equipped to play a half-court game. No one can shoot, and other than Miller they're sloppy ball handlers/penetrators (Thad Young seems like he can do either and is doing well this year -- Iguodala is struggling). They did well last year as a running and gunninng team and beat teams with their athleticism and finishing, but they had to slow things down and it has really messed with their offense.

And that's just a roster problem. Maybe a coach would be able to work it all out, but it's tough to incorporate mismatched parts.

That said, like Bricklayer, I don't think Cheeks has been that great of a coach. Totally respectable, and probably did the best he could with declining Blazers teams and turning the corner on a bad situation in Philly, but not someone who was going to work miracles. Still not a reason to fire a guy though.
