And you call yourselves Kings fans???

You know, unlike many here (apparently), I decide to believe that until papers are signed and there are moving trucks pulling away from PBP on I-5 south, the Kings are SACRAMENTO's team. I will not lie down like a beaten dog and whimper because something I love is reportedly one foot out the door. I choose to believe we still have a chance to keep the team here long-term. It may be a small chance, but it is a chance. And that is all I care about. That's all it takes.

So who else chooses to have a backbone and quit crying? Who here thinks the best way to try to keep the team is to run down the owners when the majority of the fault has clearly been on the side of the City? Not me. The new mayor is trying to do anything he can to keep the team and half of you, on a SACRAMENTO KINGS FAN WEBSITE, think the best thing to do is tuck your tail between your legs and run home to cry to mama. I for one am glad that after at least a decade of incompetence with our city leadership, we have a mayor that gets it about the team and while he may miss the mark at times with his actions, I praise his effort and drive and desire to keep the team here.

Grow a pair and do something helpful instead, will ya? Show up at a freaking rally for an hour at City Hall, like the one we had last night. About 3 dozen folks showed up and KJ/city council was happy to see us there. I had a good time with Capt'n Factorial, Mike, and kennadog and we got our point across to the media and local government.

Go to a game with a sign saying you want the team to stay. I do. Go to media outlets (SacBee, etc.) and post on message boards with something positive. Encourage folks to go to a game and just enjoy the action. I can't believe the "poor me" defeatist attitude I see from Kings fans sometimes. Make an effort. Make a difference. Or shut up and get out of the way from those that are trying to do what you should be doing too.

the point of showing up to a city council meeting and voicing your support for the team is that it somehow makes the maloofs change their minds and convinces the team to stay. but when you see everything happening in the background like trademarking new team names etc., then it seems like a wasted effort, dont you think? the wheels are already in motion and im betting it wont take long after april 15th for the maloofs to jump ship. anything we do now is solely for those not wanting to accept the fact that the team is leaving, but in reality, it means very little to the maloofs...they're done. i hope im wrong, but im being realistic.

Good rant. I agree with "gotta see a truck first".

On attending rallies, good idea. I didn't and probably won't. I have done and will do a few other things. Let's keep the fire burning. The Maloofs have had it good here with these fans and they know it. It hasn't paid rcently but they know it.

We don't need to look for all the signs of dying gasps. My recommendation is to watch the Kings even when they lose to Cleveland. When you think of it, our team is unusual, amazing, and fun to watch if you're not hung up on winning. Go Kings.

There is no prize hear for guessing right whether Kings stay or go. No prize for being first to know when of if they leave. Enjoy. If you can't fix it then enjoy. Meantime, rally, write, tell a friend, buy the Maloofs a cigar when you get a chance.

It's almost time to commit for next years season tickets. I'm ready.

This. I call myself a realist.

Well we must change our thinking then. The real question is how do we sabotage an Anaheim deal?

Go in as Laker fans and protest the Anaheim city council?

let's work to keep the colors in Sac, retain the name, and do everything possible to ensure the 6th Man banner never hangs above Southern California soil.

I don't know how the media outside of Sacramento is reflecting on the situation (probably not paying any attention if not a little. I'm curious about this as well) but a news telecast on any local channel can't be viewed without hearing about the teams situation multiple times. Tonights segments were all generally negative with comments along the lines of 'people are wasting their time' and a general defeatist attitude. I'm guessing this is what Warhawk is venting on.

EDIT:

Oh, I see that other thread. I guess that is what got him heated up.

Look, we KNOW they're considering a move. And because they're considering a move they're going to be doing things like filing for trademarks (because they will need them if they do move) and shutting up to the media (because there's nothing they can say that won't get them in hotter water with somebody). We know this, and we don't have to panic every time some small tidbit of information correlated to what we already know comes out.

But here's the important thing - they haven't signed yet. And there's reason to believe they haven't signed yet because there isn't a deal on the table that's favorable for them. Presumably they believe the deal will become more favorable as time goes on, and perhaps it will. What we here are trying to do is refresh in their minds, as often as we can, how favorable the deal in Sacramento still is, and how much more favorable we truly plan to make it by actually getting an arena deal done.

Will this sway them? We don't know. How much does it mean to them? We don't know. Are we wasting our time? Perhaps. But in the end, it's not that much time - probably about one more month before we know something concrete. In the end, it's not as if we're delusional - we know the odds are stacked against us. But at least when the dust settles, if the worst does happen we can say we tried.

You can't. You're sitting on the sidelines. And that's your prerogative. But I do ask that unless you truly WANT the team to leave, please don't come in here and belittle our efforts. Don't come in here and discourage other people who might put forth their own small effort, other people who could just maybe be the straw that breaks Anaheim's back. Don't come in here and be counterproductive just to show how "realistic" you can be. If you don't care or dare to stand with us and fight, please at the very least sit silent. Don't whisper into our ears that we're marching ourselves into a bloodbath. We know this, and with only the faintest glimmer of hope, this is how we choose to go out. Please respect that.

Here's the thing. Or the things, plural:

1) if there IS any hope of the Maloofs turning around, ANY hope, a big part of that has to be the fans. The Maloofs are emotional guys. They say they are great businessmen and everything, but half their decisons are more emo than Wall Street. There has to be an outcry from the fans, HAS to be for their to be any chance. Anaheiim has the money and the stadium. Sacramento's best, and most emotional argument has always been the fans. People are frankly being cowardly -- they are throwing away a chance, no matter how slim, because they are afraid of failing. Which of course guarantees the failure. First line of attack is somehow convincing the Maloofs to give you just one more year to get it right.

2) the City Council. It goes wihtout saying that the City Council sitting on its hands for a decade has been a HUGE problem. Now all of a sudden they are alive to the problem , but youh can't let it sink. If you quit, so mihgt they. You have to drive them until the end if tehre is to be any hope.

3) the rest of the owners. Adn here puclic perception OUTSIDE of Sacramento is huge. You can't mope around in your living rooms. THe case you have to make is that we are great fans, we don't deserve this! You have to make that the storyline in articles/stories about this situation. And that has to be what the other owners see. Some fo them may not like this move already because of the 3 teams in L.A. and small market implications. Give them a damn reason to vote against it, or convince the Maloofs they should wait a year.

4) Even IF the Kings do leave, if you as a city are going to have any chance at getting another team one day, in any sport, to replace the Kings, you can NOT let the final images of the Kings years be empty arenas and silent crowds with a parcel of trolls on the locla paper's messageboard your spokemen. You have to look like a great fanbase who would love to be given a chance to support a team to not only keep the Kings, but to have any chance of getting anybody ELSE.

There is an old saying. Trite. Annoying. And yet so often true Quitters Always Lose. Its not time yet. Quit in a month. If you have ever had any passion for this team than give them a month's worth of effort just on the chance you can save them. If they go you are going to have a very long time to regret them. You're got only a month to make some noise and try to save the situation. This is not blindness, it is core strategic thnking. You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose by making some noise, even if its futile. It can only help your situation as fans. It can't hurt.

Hey, I appreciate and admire the efforts of the townies to fight for their team. And I support you. Kings Fans, don't listen to startingtohurt, and posters of his ilk. Don't ***** out; fight until the last.

Spartans, come back with your shield, or on it.

I would think this would be self evident and it is certainly my attitude and with the vigor showed by Warhawk. Not every idea may make sense but sittig on the sidelines hurts us and makes no sense except in a very selfish way. It is a bit like rooting for the enemy in a war although that may seem ridiculous in the scope of human events. The principle may seem the same and I will go no further.

I just hope those of you who enjoy raining on parades and rallys will just keep quiet for a little while out of respect for those who may actually do something that keeps the Kings here. Some people are getting tired of the effort and the defeatist tone may just knock off the rabid fan who has the correct idea.

What can it hurt to be quiet? If they move, I am sure Jeremy will leave this web site open so you can lead your "I told you so" parade around the block a few times.

Do we need to get 300 together? Probably could be done. We just need to find the most vulnerable point and send the 300 into the breech.

As to Brick's note, I think item #1 is huge. Hasn't anyone noticed? Also they own 51%. There are people who own part of the 49% who do not want to leave. They have been vocal. The Maloofs ARE emotional and they are in the process of disappointing not only of the most rabid fan bases in the country but their own partners. Going against a partner's wishes is cold.

Finding people to buy the 49% is dependent on their agreement but in these economic times, might just not be a simple way of solving a sticky problem.

Another saying: it is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

I saw a truck!!! It hauled the old ARCO sign to the dump. Funny thing is, there wasn't one headed back the other way to put a new one up. :p

I understand the "never say die" attitude, but when you have the stinking MAYOR come out and say there is basically nothing Sacramento can do at this point, well, I'd certainly consider that a crushing blow.

But...I agree FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Warhawk, because instead of being part of the solution, people would rather sit around on their a*ss and p*ss and moan. They would rather blame everyone else for the problem at hand. I would love to know what any of these people have actually done in the last 5 to 10 years to try and get something done. Sadly, I am pretty sure I know the answer.

I think the stinking mayor me have made a mistake and became a politician so he can look good to the fans and to those who don't care. It darn near killed my spirit until I reminded myself that to trust what a politician says is to be a fool. One never knows what is really going on in the personal side of his brain.

Baltimore Colts fans have never forgotten nor forgiven NFL owner Robert Irsay (now deseased) for moving the franchise "at 4 o'clock in the morning" to Indy - and it seems they never will. But at least they got another football team, The Ravens a few years later. The story of the NBA Sacramento Kings still to unfold and get written.

Baltimore Sun readers recall the Colts' move to Indianapolis
March 27, 2009

"From 1972 to 1983 I was part of the Baltimore Colts Radio team. At WCBM, I produced and directed the Baltimore Colts football play-by-play broadcast for the 40-station Colts Radio network. Before all games, home and away, I hosted the "Coaches Corner," a 15-minute pre-game interview program with the team's head coach. The coaches included Howard Schnellenburger, Joe Thomas, Ted Marchibroda, Mike McCormack and Frank Kush.

I also hosted "Monday Night Live," a sports call-in show that was broadcast first from "The Flaming Pit" in Cockeysville, later from the "Baby Doe Mining Company" in Towson, and lastly from "The Golden Arm." The show featured former Colts Art Donovan and Ordell Braase at the Flaming Pit, John Unitas and Bobby Boyd at the Baby Doe, and Unitas and Donovan at the Golden Arm.

However, it was in my role as a morning drive-time news anchor at WCBM that remains as vivid as though it was yesterday.

March 28, 1984, was a cold, snowy morning. At 4 a.m., I was driving to the WCBM studios in Owings Mills where overnight writers learned a move was under way. The moving vans were loading and departing the Colts Complex which was only a few miles from WCBM. Once I arrived at work, the move was almost complete.

As the Colts' station, Baltimore radio listeners came to WCBM for their Colts news. As they awoke that morning, I had to broadcast the news that their team was gone.

From the phone calls we received, most listeners were stunned. Many refused to believe the news we were reporting. When the last Mayflower van pulled out of the complex, I remember slamming my fist on the studio desk realizing that a big part of my life was gone ... all we had were the memories ... the fabric of our community had changed."

-- Dave Humphrey

"As a long time Baltimore Colts Fan And season ticket holder I was shell shocked. I did not believe the NFL would ever let that happen. I wanted to blow the tires out on the Mayflower vans."

-- Bob Weltner

"I have many memories of the Baltimore Colts leaving since I worked there! So, I not only lost my job but my friends, too. That night I was suspicious of something because all the coaches were still in the office and because it was off-season, they normally wouldn't have been there that late. But I remember sitting on the floor the next day getting my last paycheck; everything was gone ... not a piece of paper or a trash can was left. People were crying in the halls. Many personal items were gone ... they were just put into cartons and sent on the trucks to Indianapolis. It was a very sad time."

-- Ronni Swartz

"The night the Colts left town, I was 12 at the time and remember watching Channel 13 news with my grandmother and grandfather (both huge Colts fans). I don't think I had a full grasp on what was happening as I watched the Mayflower trucks driving through the snow flakes and camera lights. My grandmother wept and my grandfather fumed as I sat there feeling sad for them, knowing something they loved so much was on it's way out of town. That was one sad, sad night.

I'm now a huge Ravens fan and can totally relate to how my grandparents must have felt. I just hope I never have to go through another one of those sad nights."

-- Brian Lease

"As an Upper Marlboro Maryland High School senior at the time of the Colts exodus, I was home in bed sick when my cousin, who worked as a vendor at Memorial Stadium calls me up and says "Turn on the TV or a radio. You are not going to believe this." When I turned on Channel 11 that day I felt heartsick, in addition to my illness. To think, "How could Robert Irsay do such a criminal act?" I've always wanted to see a Colts home game and my cousin had plans to treat me to one as a birthday gift that year of 1984. To see Mayor Schaefer cry that day I almost cried along with him and most of those who followed the Colts. The grand old days of the NFL died when the Baltimore Colts left that night ... but like the last words of Memorial Stadium: "Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.""

-- Eric. C. Glenn

"I was a season ticket holder then and even though I have lived in Jacksonville, Fla., for the last eight years I am still a Ravens season ticket holder and attend at least half the games with my son. That night was a total shock. Watching WBAL and seeing the news was like a bad dream. I still have my "Bob Irsay Sucks" T-shirt. What was worse was the next day when the radio stations were playing clips from Colts games. I will never forget driving home from work and one clip was "A bomb from Bert Jones to Roger Carr and a Colts TD." My wife asked if I was crying as she saw a tear running down my cheek. I told her only a true fan could feel that pain. I am sure there were thousands of tears flowing that day.The pain is still there but the Ravens have paid their dues to be Baltimore's team now."

-- Roy Schleicher

"I worked in the Colts press box on game days. I have two vivid memories of that time.

1) Finishing up work in the press box after the last game against Houston. I looked up on the scoreboard and they had a listing of the "Baltimore Colts 1984 Opponents." The Colts had just finished another bad season, and I remember thinking, "Oh well, there's always next year." There was, in Indianapolis!

2) On the night of the move, I was driving home from a Baltimore Skipjacks AHL hockey game in Hershey, Pa. We heard the report about what was going on at the complex, and I turned to my girlfriend and said, "They'll be back." How naive we all were!"

-- Mike Frainie

"I'll never forget. I was 19 years old. I woke up and it was snowing a little. I turned on the TV and Mayor Schaefer was on. I think he was outside his house. He was crying. Then they showed the Mayflower moving vans. I was absolutely stunned. I sort of knew it could happen, but I didn't think it would. I actually cried that day. All the memories of going to Memorial Stadium as a kid, watching Unitas and then Bert Jones, unfortunately Mike Pagel was the last. All those memories went in the vans with their equipment."

-- Paul V. McDonald

"Without a doubt, I can remember Vince Bagli, long-time sports anchor for WBAL, radio announcer for the Colts and overall nice guy, virtually beside himself on the news that evening. There may have been smoother sports anchors, but Vince lived and breathed the Colts and never seemed to have a cross word about anyone. He was so angry that night on TV. How out of character for him, but totally understandable. I am sure the Mayflower trucks will forever stir those memories for old Colts fans. But more indelible was Vince's sportscast that night for me."

-- Alan Ven Douern

"It was a very emotional time. I remember I would choke up every time I would here the old fight song played by the Colts Marching Band. The Colts were so much in the fabric of the times. I have lived in Westminster my entire life and remembered the days at Western Maryland College (which now I must call McDaniel) with training camp and drinking a cold one at Oz & Ginny's Pit where all the Colts would gather for R&R. As I look back on it now I see that the NFL is all about one thing and that is making as much money as possible. Don't get me wrong I am the biggest Ravens fan going but it is a business and a very well run one. They say time heals all wounds but when I hear that old song today I still get a tear for the old days. Oh yes, and I still slip up and call the Ravens the Colts much to the amusement of my kids. Memories are all we have but no one can move them out of town."

-- Bill Aldridge

"I was sad, hurt, felt betrayed. Like a girlfriend telling you: "We need to see other people." It's not you, It's me. Right? The city tried everything in vain. You saw the mayor, as close to begging as I believe that proud man could get. You hoped, you prayed but in the end you knew the deed was about to be done. They left in the middle of the night for God's sake! Stealing our team in the middle of the night. It was the end of an era. No more parking on 25th Street and walking to Memorial Stadium, watching what was once a proud franchise, turn into a piece of chattel offered to the highest bidder. Football was more to me then, it was different. I never watched a full football game again until the Ravens came. Then it slowly started again. I bought season tickets with my brother. Then when my daughter was old enough she came with me, always a special time, still is. So I guess this 61-year-old man came full circle. I'll never forget the news showing the Mayflower vans leaving in the middle of the night. Guess it was part of growing up, realizing the right things don't always happen because you want them to and hope that if you live long enough you won't see history repeat itself."

-- Gary Lowman

"That was the day that I lost all respect for the NFL and I have not watched a football game since that time. There was (and is) absolutely no reason why the NFL should have allowed the exodus to occur, especially with all of the Colts' memorabilia. I don't dislike the Ravens, I am simply ambivalent to the team. At least Cleveland was allowed to keep their memorabilia before Baltimore took their team."

-- Chris Gunther

I appreciate your passion Warhawk. I know that there were many who simply were not able to be there, last night. I was downtown late yesterday, but unfortunately was inside a tube not being allowed to move as I'm facing a potentially serious situation. That's one of the reasons that I love having the Kings so much in my life. It is a nice diversion from real life stuff. You know? So I write music, and I pour out my heart the best that I can. It is my way of contributing during this time. Please know that there are a lot of people who do care....

My friend, I know you are frustrated, as we all are, but it's over man. It's over. I watched parts of the game on TV last night and even that made me sick to my stomach. I don't feel connected to the team anymore. Honestly, at this point I feel kind of like a sellout doing anything pro-Kings. Nothing we do at this point is going to change the Maloofs' minds. If they stay, it's only because the deal down in Anaheim falls apart.

Don't really agree. What if the Maloofs reach a point where they are on the fence on whether to go or not. I can imagine that, I hope you can.

Our behavior here can make a difference.

It is not productive to give up. When (and if) they move, they will. We don't have to help them move but we can give them the right little push to get them off the fense on our side.

And it is counter productive to refer to our mayor as some sort of this or that. Write the Bee, write the City Council, write the Maloofs, write a Sacramento senator or assemblyman, write your County Supervisor, write Dan Walters, write Jerry Reynolds, etc, etc, etc. If you don't know what to write, I'm sorry. Tell you neighbor, tell your brother-in-law, tell your boss, etc, etc. Doesn't have to cost much money or time. Make some noise, if it goes right we can celebrate later, if it goes wrong we can mourn later. Send an email.

It may come down to MSE not being able to come to an agreement to move this year - and they haven't yet! Believe me, if something was signed everyone would know. No way to keep that secret.

If that happens, that means they stay. At least for a year. And we may get an arena deal in place by then. And if we do that, I doubt the league would be very excited to move a team that had two of the 5 longest sellout streaks and is home to the 6th Man. They don't want the black eye.

Is it a long shot? Yep. I don't care. It could still happen.

If you choose to tune out and give up, I am not going to change your mind. That is up to you do decide whether you think it is worth fighting for something you would like to keep or not. But if you (understand, not YOU in particular, just a figure of speech) aren't part of the solution could you at least shut the hell up and keep your Debbie Downer comments to yourself while the rest of us do something productive and helpful to the situation.

I like the Kings. I want them to stay. I think it is worth fighting for. Do SOMETHING. Make an effort. It may come to nothing in the end.

But I will tell you what - my 8 year old son saw me in front of the rally (on TV on Tuesday night) and he thought it was pretty damn cool that good old dad was out there trying to keep the team in town. Maybe others will think the same about our efforts. Maybe even some of those who really can make a difference on whether the team stays or not.

You have made a wonderful contribution already! I know not everyone can make it to a rally, etc. But please, do what you can!

I know that some have other commitments (health issues, ailing parents to care for, working multiple jobs, etc.) preventing more active participation and many live far away. But those that live here and have the time should make an effort if this team staying in Sacramento means ANYTHING to you. I, like most, have a full-time job, a wife that works, and a son to shuttle around to Cub Scouts and team sports (practices, games, etc.). People are busy. I get it. I am too.

But at least TRY to make a POSITIVE impact on the potential outcome. Get off the NBA 2010 game on the Playstation for a bit and help. Even if all you do is take 2 minutes to send an email to Kevin Johnson and the city council saying "we need a new arena and try to keep the Kings," DO IT! It could help make a difference in their opinion and potential vote in upcoming matters. You never know. I just know that if they do end up leaving, at least I can look at myself in the mirror and say I tried. Some, like Mike, do a lot more; I may not have done as much as some others, but at least I tried to help. I showed up when I could and lent my voice to the good fight.

About Go* Dam* time someone here had some reasoned, structured passion around here. Here here Warhawk.

Yes its true they haven't signed yet, but i don't believe its because they are waiting for a better deal like you say. I believe the maloofs already made their minds up (a LONG time ago if i'm being honest) to leave and i don't think its a coincidence that April 15th is the cut off date. String the fans along, make them sell out the remaining games, squeeze every last penny out of sacramento, then pull the rug out from under them. Call me cynical, but the truth hurts sometimes.

I'm not belittling your efforts. The kings mean so much to the community and to the fans, and it would be tragic if they left. No. I don't want them to leave as i stated. Im hoping im wrong because even though we've been struggling the last 4-5 years, i still watch all the games on tv. I recently went to the clipper game as well (the HERE WE STAY game). It was my first game in maybe 10 years and i had SO much fun that night. Im probably going to a couple more. So just because i'm not out there attending meetings or calling in radio stations, doesn't mean i'm on the sidelines.

Like i said before, when they leave, it's going to kill me. Im not THAT old so i don't remember the kings arriving in sacramento, but one of my earliest memories was watching gary gerrold announce the games on tv and going crazy every time mitch richmond sunk a 3 (i still have his autographed jersey in my closet). I didn't jump ship when we started to lose and i'm not jumping ship now, i still watch all the games. Im just being REALISTIC from what i've seen transpire so far...and i'm hoping to be proven wrong.

I have a suggestion for you. If you feel that way, and totally disconnected, then leave! At least for a month until a decision has been made in concrete. There are people busting thier butts trying to do everything they can to keep the team here. If you can't contribute to that, then just say nothing. I personally, am not interested in your disconnect, or your negative thoughts. I don't care why they stay, as long as they stay. Its the result that counts. Do you know what quiters accomplish? NOTHING!!!!!! The rats are the first one's to jump ship.
