Im not saying Presti is bad I’m saying both are the best of the best I would have Presti one Hinkie 2
I would take whoever Houston's GM is over Hinkie and just about anyone who is a competent talent evaluator.

The only thing that Hinkie really did was have ownership approve the strategy without needing to be in an arena negotiation.

Presti got OKC to the Finals the year before Hinkie even started.

Presti took over in 2007 and built the Sonics/Thunder into a finals team in 5 years.
he also has had incredible luck with Kevin Durant and being gifted SGA and a boatload of picks thanks to Kawhi. He also managed to win Zero championships with Prime Durant/Westbrook and fumbled the Harden deal. He is still probably the best GM but in competitive sports that has to come with an asterisk until you win a chip.

This is a good point because Wemby is probably done by 30. You never know it's been a long time since a Yao came into the league but you really have to just go for it right away. Especially since he played at a high level in Europe and doesn't need to learn the game the way someone from China or a one or two year college player did.
I see Sampson when I look at Wemby. Will be great for 3-4 years until those ligaments give.

The point is he seized every opportunity he had. You hope that Monte can repeat that Clippers trade by picking the right first or second year player plus picks.

I don't think Hinkie had that kind of talent acumen. He missed on half of his high lotto picks and his trades set them back almost as much as they helped anything. For four years of below 30 wins (3 below 20 and one 10 win year) and the number one pick in 2017 ... The process was a flop.

I hate to say it and figure modern medicine will give him 10-12 good years but it's hard to see beyond that time frame. They are already riding him hard right now. That's why Fox right now coming in would take a big load off of him.

You know who I'm starting to think put Fox up to this?

Mike Brown. San Antonio connection.
It could be adding to it. The truth is what it is. The league is borderline positioning it's entire future around Wemby like they did Yao. Yao didn't last. Will Wemby? The league is a lot softer than those days so maybe, but the history on guys over 7'3" is always hovering.

Negative! If he wasn’t a good talent evaluator how did he get rid of MCW so quick while everyone killed him for it.

Ouch. Not sure many will remember Ralph Sampson. His knees were shot out. It was embarrassing that we traded for the guy cause he was a shell of his former self.
It's so weird because it was what 3-4? years after Kings came here and we faced them in that great Finals run vs. Boston. That was his NBA peak. It's not like we traded then and there, he was on GSW and already basically on his way out of the league?

I was in junior high and high school whenever that happened so maybe my timeline is off but I am thinking 89? Maybe it was only 88 which would be worse for him, since 86 was the finals year.

yeh. I think Presti is the best talent evaluator in the game I just think he gets just a hair more credit than he deserves.

The main thing is that he moves before he has to. And he doesn't let winning the trade get in the way of a good deal (the way Ainge does) but he often wins anyways.

He's incredibly fortunate that he never had a 15+ year long drought to contend with and an owner who demands playoffs. I think OKC's owner is one of the worst in the league (but nobody will say so because they can win). He's holding up the city for a new arena and that's after he moved them there from Seattle in the first place. So he's happy to let Presti move a star to save some money because in doing so Presti usually resets nicely.

I don’t mean to quibble, but monty has built what I’ve heard fans call the most talented team since the early 2000 kings and they look like they are going to miss the playoffs AGAIN. What is this team working on now? They’ve made the playoffs 1 time in almost 20 years? This guy ain’t it. It’s not hard to see. I just think this poor fanbase has such bottom dweller expectations that any glimpse of sunlight seems like we are living large in the tropics.

I was 12 years old when this team got here. Now at 51 years old I feel like this team is never going to be able to get out of its own way. The late 90’s early 2000 kings were obviously a one off.

I hate being like this. It would just be kinda cool to see the kings doing it right before I kick the can.
As I'll be 53 in 30 days, I feel the same way. Endured a lot of inept teams, ridiculous fan expectations, and more than our share of disappointment. There is always that spark that happens when things seem to be going right and I get excited. This one lasted about 2 weeks before it came crashing down. Reading through all of this thread, I'm truly at a loss of what to think and where I can see this franchise going (other than back to Kangz oblivion and rotating head coaches).

Exactly and so in line with the Kings needing now it's hilarious. Monte literally gave it 3 goes around Fox. The Kings were turning it around with Christie to start and Fox? "I don't want to leave, but I ain't staying." Now we see what Monte is made of. Maybe, just maybe he was always drafting to replace Fox just in case? Good thing he did, the Kings have a lot of upside now when Fox is gone. I guess we see if Monte blows it or not. Getting a 1A package for Fox isn't the bar now. Just get picks and build.

Some perspective: the Denver Nuggets possess a three-time MVP, one of the greatest to ever grace a basketball court, who is putting up one of the most impressive statistical seasons in league history, as well as Jamal Murray, a second-tier star that many would categorize as on par with De'Aaron Fox. And they're still significantly closer to the play-in than they are to first place in the Western Conference. They're only two games ahead of the scrum that will result in two perfectly worthy and talented teams missing the playoffs altogether. It's possible and even likely that one .500-or-better squad will actually miss the play-in out west this season.

Maybe Monte McNair is a good GM whose team can't break through because not every team gets to break through, particularly in the Western Conference. Call it a curse of geography. Call it bad luck or bad timing. But not everybody gets to go to the dance. Not everybody gets to start with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden, as Presti did. With the roster and assets Monte was dealt, and with a mandate from ownership to win now, he has done quite well. Few GMs would do much better under the same circumstances, I imagine. Maybe Kings fans shouldn't be quite so desperate for a change that could land this franchise back in the wilderness for another decade or more. My advice to all those panicking in this thread: do not allow yourself to forget just how bad it can get.

Ham with a good point right now…….

What happens when Fox is still here after the deadline and Fox goes to the team and says “yeah, this thumb is getting worse. Time for that season ending surgery.”

This can get so much worse for the kings.

And this is where his cautiousness could pay off if we have to move Deebo, Monk, and others. Hopefully not Domas because if nothing else he is the guy I'd like to have kicking young guys butts and urging them to go from the floor with Doug. But I would understand if the Fox missile that sunk the ship is too much. There's one person to blame for all of this though and that's @QWERTYLICIOUS.

I think we all kinda knew in the back of our minds that when Fox signed with Klutch that his days as a King would be numbered.

Klutch is a very manipulative agency and no way would they allow one of their top faces languish in little Sacramento. From the get go, I'm sure they asked Fox where he would want to play, if he could chose a team to go to. They probably showed him their strategy they used to get Anthony Davis to LA and told Fox they could make his dream come true, just stick with the plan. Fox probably knew he was going to force his way to his dream destination, he never had any intention of signing long term in Sacramento during his prime.

Same play book as AD. Confess your love for the team and city you are playing with. Tell the fans and the NBA world you just want to win. Sabotage a good situation and leak that your team is looking into trades for you. The timing is exact same to AD and they need the Kings to move him now so he can sign the bigger contract extension.

The best thing Fox did for this organization was to help bring Monk in to the fold. I'm banking on the fact that Monk can take a leap to a star leading this team. Monte needs to take the best deal possible, don't do Fox and Klutch any favors.

It might be true. A team trading for Fox now isn't getting a half season rental like Siakam though. I'm sure there is media play on both sides of the aisle. Management and agents. Fox doesn't want a Butler situation. Good, stay out while you can watch your replacements shine. The Spurs ain't waiting a year and a half. The Kings do need to move Fox, but the rental charge for another team isn't a half season. It's a YEAR and a HALF. This isn't Siakam just yet.

I am convinced it was Recee that leaked to DLo.

I will apologize if proven otherwise.
Something happened that made him feel played for sure. Usually it's someone tied directly to a player. Cousin, wife, whatever. He's not the first low rung local guy to get played like that. The problem with radio guys is they add narrative to sell it to an audience. He blasted the org and likely got a rude phone call or text about it. Whoops.
