American Idol - And the weeks go on (merged)

Purple Reign's Plea for "Princess P"

http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2006-04-24-idol-coaches-contestants_x.htm

Here is an except from USA Today American Idol Critic Rona Elliott:

Paris Bennett
"It's tough to try and understand what it is people don't get about Paris. She has an instinctual, deeply powerful musical heart and soul. About the only thing I can come up with is that it's hard to "square" if you will, Paris' enormous natural and sophisticated talent in the Betty Boop package it sometimes appears that it gets delivered through."

"I think what landed Paris in the bottom three again last week, a little like Elliott, is too much talent that a mainstream voting audience can't reduce to a particular category and therefore relate to easily. When I watch and hear Paris sing I feel like she's channeling some of the greatest soul and jazz singers of all time, like a kind of karmic joke, a voice trapped in the body of a 17-year-old girl, and little at that. If you'd close your eyes and listen to Paris, America, you'd keep her in the countdown until the very, very end."

"Paris is bound full throttle for a big career if she wants, no matter the outcome, but the voters can't slot her in to a typical box, and that flummoxes them. Paris, try and pick something that shows your spunk and that's a little more accessible to the voting public. A lot of us know who you really are, but you need to play the game too."

Just a heads up, atxrocker - You're two hours ahead of most of us. Please do not post anything about the show until it's aired on the West Coast, okay? Thanks...

Katharine was outstanding tonight. She sang her heart out, and she looked terrific doing it. And yet she got lambasted by the judges. Even Paula completely criticized it. I didn't get it. I guess I never heard the original Whitney Houston song, but what I heard on stage was amazing, and it was crazy to hear the judges skewer her for it.

What an interesting night!

First i watched an absolutely sensational playoff game where the Spurs completely stole it from us....as I digress. Then i turned on the ole DVR and watched one of the strangest American Idol shows in recent memory. Here are my thoughts:

1. I am not an Andrea Bocelli follower. All i know is I see and hear his commercials constantly during Kings games because he is going to be at Arco or was at Arco. Is he blind? I honestly could not tell. At sometimes looking at how he was moving I thought no, but then seeing his eyes closed most of the show, I thought "Is he blind"?

2. David Foster was absolutely brutally honest. I don't know if the contestants took what he was offering.

3. What is up with Paula Abdul. Man she is something. At times she is so incoherent, it is unbelievable.

4. The judges were very inconsistant. I tought they were over critical of good to great performances (Kathrine and Paris) and over praised other performances (Chris and Elliott)

Performances

Kathrine
I can understand what the judges were saying, but I thought she was very good. I Have Nothing is one of the all time greats by Whitney Houston. Don't compare her to Whitney, compare her to Kathrine.

Paris
What more can she do? She was sensational. Flawless, sang all the right notes where they needed to be. I don't think America can get past her age and immaturity and I think that is shameful. THE GIRL IS SEVENTEEN, she can not help being who she is. Paris is getting robbed.

Taylor
Once again Taylor lacked the energy he had when the show began. I do not know what is going on. He sounds good, but the power is not there. It just seems like this experience is sucking the life out of him. It just seems like he is not enjoying himself in what should be the greatest moment of his career.

Chris
Last night could have been a winning performance. Chris is very polished and has proved to me that he is not just a rocked out facsimile. I thought it was his best performance.

Kellie
 BUH, BYE!! Sweet girl. innocent. Very sincere (I think). But she is way over her head.

Elliott
Smooth as silk. Not a performance worth crying about, but he was very good. He has been my favorite male throughout the competition. He showed his R and B skills last night.

Bottom Three - Should be Pickler, Kathrine and Taylor.

But it will be Pickler, Paris and Elliott

Eliminated - Kellie (Elle Mae Clampett) Pickler. if she is not eliminated, this show will have lost all creditbillity in my eyes.

#1T - Katharine .... HOLY SCHMOKE - luv that dress - great night
#1T - Elliott ... excellent
#3 - Paris .... another great week
#4T - Chris .... good week
#4T - Taylor ... I actually liked Taylor's rendition, but in comparison to others ... not competitive enough
#5 - Kellie ... well, I must admit - I too, have had it with Pickler ... I was really trying to give her a chance, but IT'S TIME TO GO !!!!

I didn't realize that Andrea Bocelli was blind, either. In those commercials, it certainly doesn't look like it-it appears that he has focus and is looking at the audience and band. However, last night, it appeared that he was completely Stevie Wonder-blind!

Just finished watching. I second all the talk about Paula, she is becomming un-watchable. She adds nothing to the show. I say vote her off!

Very hard week to judge, I thought Kat, Elliot, Paris and Chris were all excellent. Taylor and Pick are going to be bottom 2. Something didn't look right with Taylor cause he should of done great on that song. Katherine probably had the hardest song which is why I ranked her #1. I thought she did great not sure what Simon/Randy and Paula heard. Of course they love Whitney and they usually don't give compliments out when someone does a Whit song.

1. Katherine
2. Chris / Paris
4. Elliot
5. Taylor
6. Kelly

I think this is the end of the road for Kelly. It seems later in the competition the vote tends to reflect how they sing vs popularity.

I honestly didn't like anyone last night (including Taylor). I had the feeling that something was off with the sound on the stage and it was messing everyone up.

I know this is a PG rated board, but did anyone see Katherine's button on her dress pop out towards the end of her performance, exposing her underwear choice to the whole world?

Katharine
Her performance was brutal to me. I thought she sang it in an octave out of her range, she could barely make audible some of the notes in the first verse. I did sorta like how she ended it but by that time she had lost me. It might have been a good choice for her, but I thought she was not in command of that song but for maybe 5 seconds near the end and struggled to over sing it most of the rest of the time. I thought Randy hit it on the head, if you’re going to take on a Whitney song from Whitney in her PRIME, you better not leave any doubt that you can handle it and the arraignment of it that you came up with to showcase your voice. She did neither, in a hugely bad way.

Paris
I like her, I’m not in love with her. Definitely was the best female vocal this week hands down without question. I thought her performance last week was better. The judges were right in my book too, I really really really heard Diana Ross circa 1970’s/very early 80’s coming out of her body last night. That was amazing.

Taylor
I had higher hopes for the performance than what he delivered. I’m glad he didn’t try to gyrate during the latter portion of this song like it looked like he was thinking about it. I think his energy is tied to whatever song he is singing. If it’s a song he was move around with, he’s a different Taylor. There are some times he can do a slow song and still show some vocal ability, but last night wasn’t one of them. And I still go back to how much I looked forward to hearing him do that song, and then was completely disappointed with what he did with it.

Chris
I didn’t like this performance as much as the judges did. I thought he was good, but he still over rocked it. I thought he had a good song choice, but to show range for me, I thought he needed to go outside the rock genre. He sounded like a updated stylized Bryan Adams, which to me still isn’t his own sound.

Kellie
One can only hope two straight weeks of crap means her falling out of the race. I have NO idea what that was she sung last night. I’ve heard Unchained Melody, and that was not even remotely close to the song she sang.

Elliott
I didn’t cry over it either, I thought he was the best male and best overall performer last night. I still like him, I have a hard time believing he outlasts Taylor or Chris, for many of the reasons the critic from the article PReign posted has. This guy should never be in the bottom three just from talent alone and he’s been there twice.

Bottom Three - Kellie, Katharine and Taylor. Paris might slip in here too for an all female bottom 3.

Eliminated – Kellie Wishful thinking perhaps, but two weeks in a row she blows it and knows it and gets to stay around? No way, not even with the fake votes she’s been getting to keep her around.

Somebody really needs to take away Paula’s illicit drugs or perform an intervention. She was embarrassing last night.

I think Paula Abdul is comic relief. Either that or a train wreck.
She reminds me of a female Laker fan that was sitting in front of us in Arco while we were watching Game 6 (on the Jumbotron)

(Rick Fox has the ball, the ref blows the whistle)
Lady: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAH!! (gets up and starts clapping)
Guy next to her: Um, that was a CHARGING call on Rick Fox.
Lady: I DON'T CARE! YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

I didn't watch the performances last night, but watching Andrea Bocelli tonight made me go straight to Amazon.com to order another one of his CDs. Wow...

I guess votefortheworst finally gave up on Kellie.

Here are my power rankings for the remaining five hopefuls:

1. Chris
2. Katharine
3. Taylor
4. Elliott
5. Paris

At this point, I think if Paris was just a little older she might go further. Actually, though, at this point I think those rankings could shift after every performance.

The remaining singers are, at least to me, all going to find success. And I loved the Ford commercial. Their voices blended well and I didn't feel my ears bleed.

This is just my ordering. America probably has Chris ranked higher and Elliott lower.

It's so hard to cut anyone from this list. Sometimes Paris is the best singer in the competition. They should just stop the show and declare all five the winners. Comparing these five is like comparing apples to oranges to bananas to peaches to kumquats.

1t. Katharine
1t. Elliott
3. Taylor
4. Chris
5. Paris

Ciao Kellie ... have a wonderful and happy life !!! :)

Okay, my rankings of the FINAL FIVE are:

1t - Katharine
1t - Elliott
3 - Paris
4 - Taylor
5 - Chris

.... this is getting tougher

My observation of this is probably for the first time in this show's history you have 5 genre specific performers. These five are five totally different singers that seem to struggle singing outside of their expertise. You may hear:

Kathrine on your Top 40 Pop radio station (i.e. Christina Agulera, Jessica or Ashley Simpson)

You may hear Chris on your Rock Alternative Station (i.e. Creed, Third Eye Blind, or Staind)

Paris would be on your Smooth Jazz Station or Adult Contemporary R&B Station (i.e. Anita Baker, Natalie Cole, Mary J. Blige)

Taylor would be on the Classic Rock or Soul Station (i.e. Joe Cocker, Three Dog Night, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Gordon Lightfoot) and

Elliott on your Today's Hits and Old School R&B Station (Luther Vandross, Jeffery Osbourne, Anthony Hamilton).

To me it has come down to what kind of music do you like because all five of them are worthy to win.

Power Ranking
1. Elliott
2. Paris
3. Kathrine
4. Chris
5. Taylor

Nice breakdown. As I touched on earlier, I think all five will have viable music opportunities regardless of which one eventually gets the title of AI.

Thanks for taking it a bit further.

:D

I agree with your comparisons, except for one; comparing Katharine to Ashlee Simpson is like about as lopsided as comparing... ummm... a terrific singer to... ummm... Ashlee Simpson...

And here is a picture of a cute bunny with a pancake and Ashlee Simpson on its head for ya!!

Man, I must be watching a different show!!

Chris (barring an injury) is going to win!! Chris is what I would call "DYNAMIC." Katharine is the only person close to him in terms of dynamic voice quality. So, it will be a battle between Chris and Katharine in the end with everyone elso trying to survive the next couple weeks.
