American Idol - And the weeks go on (merged)

Taylor is smart!!

There is a "un"confirmed rumor that his self produced/recorded CD Under the radar has gone gold (selling 600,000 since AI started). Before AI Taylor signed over the rights to his dad so American Idol couldn't interfere with it. Estimates have it that Taylor's profit on the CD (which sells for $14) is at least half (which could be true since no major label/distributor was involved). That means he made up to $4.2 million :)

Love him or hate him, but that was smart on his part.

And then there were two.

The song choices for tonight are supposedly going to be:

Over the Rainbow, Black Horse and the Cherry Tree and her original song is My Destiny, for Kat

Levon and Living for the City and his original song is Do I make you Proud, for Taylor.

My rankings:
1. Kat
2.-----its not even close

My prediction

Taylor, America blows

There is something to be said for the southern-small-town support. Every past winner has been from the south, and the past final 2 from the last 3 seasons have both been from the south. But, if Taylor does win as I think he will ( unless Kat pulls off a phenomenal undeniable performance ala Carrie Underwood last season) I think he won't do that well once the show is over. And I'm not saying thing just because I prefer Kat, but because Taylor falls into that "niche" category. Not really appealing to the mass market, but a much smaller market who's support doesn't go that far, JMHO.

I don't consider my self as a part of a "southern-small-town support" and Taylor has been my clear personal favorite in all 5 seasons of AI. I have never voted before until he came along. It's all matter of preference and Taylor is what I prefer.

IMHO Kat is alot more forgetable (except when wearing something revealing) than Taylor. IMHO again.

I think Taylor's confidence and marvelous sense of humor will stand him in very good stead should he win. I think he'll do very well. He's different. Kat, on the other hand, is really much too much like any number of female vocalists currently out there.

I agree about Taylor, but with all of the mass-marketing and public relations 'AI' does with their artists, he will be out of that "niche" market just by their virtue.

Agree with you about Kat completely. I'm disappointed in this season's final two. There is just nothing that interesting or phenomenal about either.

Taylor:

1st song - did great (but I was distracted by the ugly pimp jacket)
2nd song - not as good as first time he did it
3rd song - stupid song, started of all over the place but 1/3 of the way into it he stopped playing it safe and did his thing and made abad song sound decent

Kat

1st song - I liked it first time and I liked it tonight, but it was a safe performance and she reminds me of Constantine from last year and Ace with constant pouting into the camera
2nd song - as good as last week. Great job
3rd song - WTF was that. Horrible song and she did nothing to give it a little boost and make it sound good. She sounded off key and pitchy.

Winner - Mandisa ;) j/k Taylor

Winner should have been Chris. ;) I watched tonight's show and I really wasn't impressed with either Kat or Taylor, and no I'm not just saying it because Chris isn't on the show. I don't think they showed any talent. I thought Taylor was off key on one of my favorite songs "Levon". And what the heck was up with the jacket.

Kat played it safe on the first song Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, but stepped it up a notch on her 2nd song Over the Rainbow. But that was a bad 3rd choice song.

Neither of them have the talent like Bo and Carrie did last season.

Just my 2 cents.

I wasn't feeling either of these two either. But, loved Taylor's first song - best performance. I too was mad faced that he blew "Levon" His last song was horrible and devoid of personality.

Kat - You should have done Rainbow again for the finale. That final song was horrible and highlighted every single reason she should have been gone weeks ago.

Katharine ... lost it on her final song.
Not her fault. That was the worst song ever. I've written songs in ten minutes better than that.

And what was with the gospel choir? Gospel choirs usually signify power and soul. This had neither (and neither did Taylor's single, for that matter).

All in all, a mediocre finale, to say the least. Though it was her best performance, I had no desire to hear "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" again (nor did I want to hear Kat's first song), and Taylor doing "City" was great, but I wanted to hear him do something new, like something by Ray. "Georgia", or "You Don't Know Me", or "Born to Lose". In fact, I wanted them both do something new. Keyword: new. And speaking of new... the singles... wow. The songwriters are responsible for writing the songs for the Finale of the most watched TV show in America, and THAT'S what they come up with?!?!?! Are you KIDDING ME?

It's hard for me to say this, cuz I didn't think too much of him before, but Chris was better than both of them tonight. Easily. He had the power of a leading man. Taylor has the soul, and the energy, but not the presence. Kat was much more impressive before.

Are we talking about American Idol or the presidential elections?

I think doing something "new" was not an option. They were supposed to sing 2 songs they did previously.

Chris would have done just as bad last night (if not even worse on that last song).

I was not impressed with AI's finale .....

It was almost like a rerun ....

Not impressed with either of the SINGLE DEBUT's

How hokey can AI get ???

My Destiny and Do I Make you Proud ????

Songs written for people in SELF IMPROVEMENT programs (gag me).

At this point, I don't care who wins ... cause I wouldn't buy any of their products.

For a season to have some of the best singers - IMO ... to end without any sizzle or WOW FACTOR ... not sure I'm gonna watch 2-hours of nothing ... I'll just tune in on the last 15 minutes.

When have the AI songs ever not been totally hokey? From that horrible 'Moment Like This' from the first season to now, they've all been that way.

Yeah, you're right .... but, I had my hopes up for this season thinkin' they'd write something "outside the box".

Baseball/Chevrolet/Apple Pie .... it is American Idol

How do you know Chris would have done the last song?
I don't, but judging by how horrible the songs were written and arranged do you honestly think that Chris' song would have been any better? I doubt they would have a really cool rocks song that is right up his alley.

As you know I was one pulling for Chris since the beginning, therefore, I think he would have done better. However, we will never know.

A Moment Like This was a decent song, it was hokey, but it did have emotion, it had melody, and it actually captured the spirit of the moment, and it actually did have some success on the billboards, if I remember. I actually believed Clarkson when she sang it.

These two songs sucked, there's no two ways about it.

I am actually watching last night's show right now. And if McPhee does not get her aspirin off of the floor I am going to puke. I like Taylor, but I agree these two do not measure to Kelly, Ruben (Clay), Fantasia, Underwood (Bice).

I enjoyed the show. I liked seeing the camraderie among the top 12. I enjoyed the music, even if it wasn't perfect.

I liked seeing Clay Aiken. I liked seeing Carrie Underwood. I REALLY liked seeing Prince and Dionne Warwick.

It was entertaining. I thought they added a lot of stuff into this final show that made it worth watching.

I'm glad Taylor won. I wish him and all the other finalists all the success in the world.

Final Rankings

Yeah, this was a terrific season.

So... here are my final rankings for the Idols (aka how the competition SHOULD have gone... watch for a shocker in the top 3):

8) ACE left when he should have... his voice didn't match his Idol looks, apparently.

7) PICKLER was always very good (and very sexy, at times), just never fantastic.

6) PARIS was consistently amazing week after week after week, if it weren't for her age and her looks, which were in total contrast to her booming voice, and I think that made her hard to be convincing. But she was nearly, if not, their equal in her vocal ability to the top two females, IMHO. In fact, any of the top 6 could be argued to be the next American Idol, but this is the way I see it.

5) ELLIOTT... ah... Elliott... everybody loves Elliott. The boy was technically the best male vocalist of the competition (he sang the most difficult songs, and sang them all convincingly), but it's a lot about presence on stage, and he definitely had the least out of the top 7-8. I hate to rank him 5th, since he's vocally better than or equal to everybody above him, but his star quality wasn't as large.

4) TAYLOR was an odd choice for American Idol... he was terrific at a lot of things, and his energy and variety really carried it through for him. But judging solely based on voice, he seemed like a standard 3rd or 4th place fan favorite type that would break hearts when he was eliminated (Kings, anyone?). Though his Joe Cocker was great. Still, it was his dance moves and his personality (especially compared to Kat's lack thereof on both accounts) that won it even moreso than his raspy tenor.

2t) I feel KAT could have blown the competition (at least the females) out if she weren't so nervous and "pose-y" on stage. She had the looks and the amazing voice. But there were rumors that she was actually a self-centered diva off stage (compared to the others), and I can absolutely see that... in fact I know a girl who sings and looks like her, and... yep, total diva. You could see her transform personality-wise more and more as the competition wore on, and I think it had an effect on her likeability.

2t) CHRIS was really, really good. Should have been with Kat for the finale (well, since my #1 was already gone), or likely The American Idol himself. Such power and smoothness in his voice... he was not "pop" material... but much more. Hearing him sing "Love Me Tender" in that Elvis medley, I could see why so many people are fanatical about him. He was a really good singer, no doubt.

1) MANDISA should have stuck around MUCH, MUCH longer (like, 8 episodes). I was ready to crown her Idol when she was there. She matched Kat in impressiveness of vocals, with her unbelievable power and range and Kat's pitch precision and superb control. The girl was out of this world. Ultimately, it comes down to preference, and unfortunately, Mandisa didn't fit America's image of an idol, but she deserved to win just as much as Chris or Kat. I put her up here because she completely blew my mind, and I would've loved to see her shatter the stereotype of the American Idol (I guess Reuben kind of did, too)

The rest didn't really deserve to be in the competition, IMHO.

So:

1) Mandisa
2t) Chris
2t) Kat
4) Taylor
5) Elliott
6) Paris
7) Kellie
8) Ace

One thing I noticed about Elliott? The power in his voice TONIGHT was marvelous. If he had been able to project that during the competition, it might not have been Katharine and Taylor up there at the end. I have to wonder if it was nerves that kept him from really digging down and getting that inner voice to come out.

As far as Mandisa goes, I think she was this year's victim of "She's safe so I'll vote for ..." It happens every season. I think it really is that simple and not some statement about America's image of an idol.

I know, I said I wouldn't watch but the last 15 minutes ...

Well, me and AI ... I'm like a MOTH TO A FLAME

I liked the show ... it was entertaining ... I even liked the American Idol Awards :D

Definitely an improvement from Tuesday night

Agree, VF - Elliott sang great last night ... heck even Pickler sang good, I always liked her voice, it was the COUNTRY BUMPKIN in her that made it hard to tell if she was real or not. PUCK-N-PICKLER :D

Mandissa can sing ... her voice is so strong, it just rises above the rest.

All-n-all, I enjoyed this season ... Good Luck to Taylor, Katharine and the rest of the AI finalist.
