NEW YORK, Dec. 16 -- Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets and Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves lead all players in the Western Conference and Shaquille O’Neal of the Miami Heat and Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors lead all players in the Eastern Conference in votes received after the first returns of the 2005 NBA All-Star Balloting program.

Through the 2005 All-Star Balloting program, NBA fans from around the globe are responsible for voting in the starters for the 54th NBA All-Star Game, which will be played in Denver on Sunday, February 20. The game will be broadcast live on TNT, Rogers Sportsnet, ESPN Radio and audio in several languages on NBA.com (http://nba.com) at 8 p.m. (EST).

Yao leads all players with 881,223 votes. He is followed at the center position in the Western Conference by Sacramento’s Brad Miller (130,824). Garnett, the 2003-04 NBA Most Valuable Player, leads all Western Conference forwards with 751,586 votes, followed by San Antonio’s Tim Duncan (570,090). Houston’s Tracy McGrady (680,373) and Kobe Bryant (673,665) lead all Western Conference guards.

O’Neal leads all Eastern Conference players with 854,930 votes, followed at the center position by Detroit’s Ben Wallace (266,891). Carter (619,959) and Orlando’s Grant Hill (552,328) lead all Eastern Conference forwards. Cleveland’s LeBron James leads all Eastern Conference guards (557,538), followed by Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson (521,245).

Through the 2005 NBA All-Star Balloting program, which began on November 18, fans have the opportunity to vote in more ways than ever. The balloting program has expanded to include 19 languages on the NBA.com Network, downloadable ballots via Verizon Wireless and approximately 150 Loews Cineplex Entertainment movie theaters in the United States. This year, Twentieth Century Fox joined Sprite, America Online, Reebok and approximately 2,100 Foot Locker and Champs Sports stores in the United States and Canada as All-Star balloting partners. Ballots are also distributed in all 29 NBA arenas and all six NBDL arenas.

NBA All-Star 2005 is a week-long celebration that enables fans to experience the thrill of the world’s greatest athletes playing the game they love and features a full slate of community enhancing activities and fan festivals. The 2005 NBA All-Star Balloting program continues through January 23, 2005, and updated results for the Eastern and Western Conferences will be issued regularly leading up to the unveiling of the All-Star starters on Thursday, February 3. Following the completion of fan voting and starting line-up announcement, the head coaches in each conference will vote to determine the remaining All-Stars in their respective conferences.

Yao was expecting... But Vince? TMac? wow...

I wonder how bad Houstong Rox should be that they wouldn't get two players year after year...

Vince Carter is the biggest puzzle in the history of All-Star balloting. I picture a room full of trained monkeys with computers, endlessly voting for him from sunrise to sunset and then over again the next day. It's the only conclusion I've been able to reach to explain the voting.

;)

:D Good stuff.. I can stop laughing reading this.

I vote for AK47, my only non-Kings selection in the West. Get well soon~

That would be hilarious if Artest was voted in. I guess they took him off the internet ballot, though, so it would have to be done by stuffing paper ballots.

With the lack of good centers in the West, I would be shocked if the coaches didn't vote Brad in. Unless of course somebody else comes up big.

Vince bumping JO out of the starting lineup. Do I vomit now, or in February? *sigh*
Why wait, Hicks. Get it over with.

Voting Vince Carter to the All-Star team is absolutely insane. And yet, some idiot fans keep doing it year after year.

I'm thinking part of the problem might actually be confusion about how long the suspension is lasting, whether or not Jermaine will even be eligible to play, etc.

I'll tell you what. I wasn't going to vote at all in this year's Mr. Basketball contest, but just for you - and other Pacer fans - I'm going to start voting for JO every day!

Preteen adolecent boy like my friends' little brothers. All they care about is hype, shoe commercials, dunks, and street cred.

They also get false perceptions of players from videogames.

Vince Carter is voted on year after year simply because everyone seems to be voting as if it was the year 2000, which was the last time he was remotely deserving. What's funny is that he can't even do what he's voted to do anymore-- he's been relegated to jump-shooting, and he prefers it that way as well.

ya know i love watching all-star weekend, it is actually one of my favorite times because i love the frosh/soph game, almost a little better than the real all-star game, and the dunk and three point, but the all-star voting is such a popularity contest it's not even funny...I mean Vince Carter does not belong in there this year, at least in my opinion, it just makes me sick how fans just vote for players because they are popular and it's the cool thing to do...even if guys haven't played all year people would still vote for them. I can remember when penny hardaway was good and he was hurt all year, and people still voted him to start(i think), he came back for the game, and then the next week got "hurt" for the rest of the season, i think the same thing happened with grant hill...just goes to show that people who vote for popularity have no passion for the game...only for certain "popular" players...in this case this year would be Carter. I don't think Yao should be starting either...just my opinion.

JO should not be an allstar this year. Vince should not be his replacement, but JO should not be there.

NBA fans have got to be the stupidest fans in any sport I've ever seen.
the baseball fans are pretty stupid too. so are the managers who pick the teams. there were freaking 10 yankees inthe AS game last year BS!!!!!

it gets kinda annoying that the fans in other countrys can vote, since they vote in undeserving guys like yao. TD should be starting at center in the west, KG at the PF and dirk as a SF. amare totally deserves to be there also, but i wouldn't start him over TD, KG or dirk, all who are averaging double doubles. and they don't have nash setting them up ( anymore ;) ) like amare does. amare has been awesome this year, but those 3 have been better.

As I recall, last year American fans actually voted Yao into the All-Star game without Chinese fans' help.

NBA fans have a long history of "stupidity". I put it in quotes nto because i don't think a lot of them are stupid, but because there is a lot more to it than that. Ballot stuffing, sneaker campaigns, hype, just about anything except actual oncourt performance. Every year there are multiple stupid picks voted in. Luckily NBA coaches are a lot more honest than baseball managers in selecting the backups so only a couple of undeserving guys get in every year. But the voting process itself is a sad joke. I would just end it myself, but understand despite its stupidity it soemhow makes the fans feel like they are involved by joining in the patheticness.

:D you are just too much VF21.... :D
but I totally agree with you. Every year I get shocked to find out that he is leading the AllStart voting. I am not sure if people are still hang up on Vince from few years back (and his slam-dunk competition) or what the deal is, but VC of today is nowhere near what he used to be.

LeBron's leading the Eastern Conference Guards. I'm not gonna try to understand how Vince can do absolutely nothing and still get the most votes.

Although I am really happy to see Grant Hill in 2nd(my choice to go).

lol, oh so very true. Reminds me when i first started to really like basketball, i always remembered trying to have a decent conversation with some guys my age, but they would only mention Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant, I never liked them because of the hype they got, and then i realized that, thats the only reason why they like them, the shoes, they jerseys, the videogames, Woah imagine when I mentioned Stojakovic too them, they looked like they never hurd his name, lol well i guess what I'm trying to say is that, thats were they probably got most of their votes:p
