All-Rookie Teams - JT Snubbed Again?

Did Jason Thompson deserve a slot on the all-rookie team?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this thread, but because I'm talking about JT I figured this was ok. It looks like Jason Thompson was snubbed from the All-Rookie 1st and 2nd teams.

I was just wondering what everybody here thought about that. Did JT deserve a spot on the 2nd team or did the voters get it right? I think Jason played great this season, especially towards the end, and I'm disappointed that not only did he get left out of All-Star weekend, but he was left off of the All-Rookie team too.

Kind of sucks because they have 3 guards in each list. There are some deserving players there, but Thompson should have gotten a 2nd team not at least. At least he got some votes though.

I wish he would have made the team, but realisticly he doesn't deserve to. The two forwards on the 2nd team, Gasol and Love, both had better seasons. Add the fact that the kings had the worst record in the league, I don't think he should have made it. Lopez, Beasley, Love, and Gasol all had a better season.

i dont believe its a snub. the only place he could have gone under is in lieu of beasley, which obviously wouldnt happen. JT is where he is supposed to be; just on the bubble. Interesting to see how he will respond next year. He definitely had a great shot to make the Soph team if he does a couple things this offseason:

1. Bulk up. Kids not very imposing. Hit the weights and work on gaining lean muscle.

2. Dont dribble the ball if you dont have to. Dribble once to get to your spot, then use footwork.

3. Keep the ball HIGH. Stop getting stripped down there.

That's unfortunate, but iots hard to argue against any of the guys who actually made it. Don't like that Courtney Lee got more votes than Jason did though. Jason looks to have much more promise.

I'll go out on a limb and say that if JT had been starting rookie PF for the NY Knicks this past season (playing all 82 games as he did) he would have made all rookie team.

This was conducted among the 30 NBA head coaches, and some joker gave Robin Lopez a first-team vote. Since coaches were clearly not allowed to vote for their own players (Rose and Mayo were considered "unanimous" first team players despite getting only 29 votes apiece) it wasn't hometown favoritism.

I want to know who the dummy was that voted for Robin. Either he thought he was voting for Brook (which is pathetic, but note that Brook got only 28 votes, so it's possible) or he was really honestly voting for Robin (which is more pathetic).

My money's on Kenny.

Either way, Brook is more deserving than JT. Without question.

The horrible play and record of the Kings kept JT from any chance of making the rookie team. All the "bigs" on the 2 teams played for good teams (Love and the T-Wolves not-with-standing) and looked better in view of the teams records. JT will stay under the radar for another year tho' he is getting really good reviews from many of the other teams on-air folk. When the Kings get better JT will get the accolades.

Most of the rookies who make it there are either hyped by talking heads (Lopez, Gasol, Love), athletic guards that have a high usage rate and thus stand out (Westbrook, Gordon), or have started/played significant roles for teams in the playoffs or teams that have made a playoff push (Chalmers, Augustin, Fernandez)--the rest are pretty much expected. Unfortunately JT doesn't fall into any of these three categories

Jason seems like the type of kid that could thrive with a chip on his shoulder.

Screw all rookie, he should shoot to become an AllStar.

I had to go with "unsure" on the poll. It's tough to compare a post guy to a guard, so I didn't try, but Thompson and Gasol (the Marc version, of course) were pretty neck-and-neck this year. JT's per-36 numbers were slightly better on the rebounding and scoring side, but Gasol had better shooting percentages both from the floor and the line, and slightly edged JT in assists, steals, and blocks.

Somehow that translated to pretty big differences in PER and Win Shares, though -- with Gasol ahead.

Still, I have more faith in Thompson going down the road, because I think he's got a more diverse game. Gasol's professional experience in Europe probably helped a lot with the transition, but I wouldn't be surprised to see JT turn out to be the better player in the end. Could be a bit of a homerism, though.

But all in all, it's tough to complain about the vote. Oden didn't get much recognition (and he didn't deserve much, frankly). I'm not sure I understand Lee finishing ahead of Thompson, but outside of that...seems about right.

These poll results are kind of surprising. I can't see how you can argue with anyone ahead of him in terms of numbers or impact. Courtney Lee getting more votes is odd, although he is already one of the leagues best defender. This rookie class was so ridiculously deep that second team is far better then most years.

Stats

First Team:
Derrick Rose 16.8pts 3.9reb 6.3ast (playoff team)
OJ Mayo 18.5pts 3.8reb 3.2ast
Russel Westbrook 15.3pts 4.9reb 5.3ast
Brook Lopez 13.0pts 8.1reb 1.0ast
Michael Beasely 13.9pts 5.4reb 1.0ast (playoff team)

Second Team:
Eric Gordon 16.1pts 2.6reb 2.8ast
Kevin Love 11.1pts 9.1reb 1.0ast
Mario Chalmers 10.0pts 2.8reb 4.9ast (playoff team)
Marc Gasol 11.9pts 7.4reb 1.7ast
DJ Augustin 11.8pts 1.8reb 3.5ast
Rudy Fernandez 10.4pts 2.7reb 2.0ast (playoff team)

Jason Thompson 11.1pts 7.4reb 1.1ast

This is have some perspective people time. Jason could have made the teams and nobody would have blinked. But there are no obvious weak links ahead of him -- lot of guys had similar or better seasons. And Jason played for the worst team in the league. No magic. No conspiracy. And no particular robbery. Just a tough year.

I can't see how 60% of you guys think he should have made it. The #s above don't lie. All of the above bigs have slightly better #s and played for better teams. Take the goggles off guys. Hopefully JT uses it as fuel for next year. We all know he can be better than all of the above bigs on that list. DO IT JT!!!!

On a side note, why does the second team have six players?

JT is as good as some of the guys in the 2nd team. But he is on the worse team in the league record wise. So that alone will have him snubbed everytime.

I looked at the guys that made the teams and I cannot unequivocally identify anyone there that shouldn't be. He missed out to some better guys, but he wasn't "snubbed."

JT limited his own minutes, too, by being a foul machine. I saw improvement over the year and expect him to start getting more notice around the league next season. This just gives him reason to work even harder. I'd say he's done pretty well for being someone that surprised most people when he was drafted as high as he was.

I don't know if I'm just starting to get old, but these post-season awards mean less and less to me. This is not an unbiased survey of the best rookies, it's the opinion of various voters who have varying degrees of knowledge about each players. Really, if they were all watching the games, they would have to put Love ahead of Beasly on the first team this year, even if Beasly has the potential to be better long term.

In terms of JT, I am actually glad he didn't make it. You can certainly argue he played better than Lee or Chalmers (playoff aside). However, I hope he saw that he didn't make it and got upset. Supposedly, he is already a hard worker, so I am hoping this just gives him extra motivation and a chip on his shoulder to work hard all summer, while some of those other rookies are playing in exhibition tournaments and eating potato chips.

I can't really argue with the results. Especially if all your doing is going on stats, which don't show the intangibles. I personally thought that he outplayed Love in their meetings, and long term, may end up being a better player than Love. Not that it means anything in the present.

JT had the misfortune to be on a bad team with a point guard, whose definition of seeing the floor is being able to tell you how many cracks are in it. Put him on a good team with a good pt guard and he probably makes the team. But then again, maybe on a good team he doesn't play as much.

I would just put the list on his locker next year with a question. Where's your name on this list?;)

Tough because this class turned out to be quite deep and talented.

However, I would have put him in place of DJ Augustin...

We'll see how he pans out next year. History tells us that some players improve - drastically - while some plateau and others take a swandive (remember Sean Williams?).

However, outside of Mario Chalmers, I see all these guys improving statistically next year. So JT has his work cut out for him - hoping he can put up 16/10 averages next season while increasing his assists to about 2.5/game.

Marc Gasol made it over JT. Please. That's just a promotion to help with some international dollars.
What Marc Gasol lacks in overall talent, he makes up for in toughness. He has WAY more his brother, that's for sure...he had some decent battles in the paint this year with Shaq and Duncan.
