7'9 Sun Mingming ... Take a chance on him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-sunshining&prov=ap&type=lgns

I just came across this article on Yahoo. Chinese Center Sun Mingming, worlds tallest basketball player just completed his best season as a pro .. The guy is 7'9 and 25 years old.

Now, lets be realistic ... He is probly pretty bad at basketball skill wise, word is he has a very hard time with his stamina .. hard time getting up and down the floor which is very understandable at 7'9.

My question is WHY wont the Kings , or any bad team, give this guy a chance .. Think outside the box a bit, he'll most likely sign for super low money and dammit he is 7'9. play him 15 mpg for a different look .. he'll put some butts in the seat and it will give the media something to talk about. I hate how GM's are so scared of taking a chance .. especially the kings, we have nothing to lose signing him .. nothing.

That being said, I doubt we get him ..

The Lakers had his rights and were not impressed at all. He can come over and try to get an NBA team to invite him to summer camp. He's at best a major project and at 25 might have a hard time making a D-league roster.

I believe this is the same guy that injured Jason Thompson's shoulder during last year's predraft workout and dropped JT's stock until Petrie surprised everyone by picking JT at #12.

So NO to this guy..he may just hurt our players during practice...One of the scary things in playing basketball is if your opponent don't know how to play clean and good defense. The next thing you know he's the culprit of your fall or broken bones.

Let's use him when we go up against LA.:)

Haha, cold.

Not that I wouldnt laugh if I saw Kobe get laid out by some 7'9 chinese guy

Thats what im saying though. I feel like Bill Simmons trying to pass some wacky idea to people he has on his show .. I dont live anywhere close to Sacramento, but if we had a 7'9 foot manbeast who played for 10 - 15 mpg I would go to a few games and watch this guy. He'd be entertaining, we'd get some Chinese pub, Maloofs could make some money off him .. we'd make some headlines all for some really cheap price. Im not expecting a huge contributer here, but I refuse to believe that a 7'9 guy who can play ball a LITTLE bit cant help a team for a short period of time.

He came over a few years ago and I was an advocate for checking him out at the time just on the theory that all you have to do is have him stand under the hoop and he's a weapon. Having since seen tape on him however, I'd say pass -- he can't move at all.

Your idea sort of reminds me of Bill Veek and the midget..

Maybe we could get some real colorful uni's and change our name to the Sacramento Clowns....:D

Is this the guy that someone said resembled a giant oak tree in the paint but had less movement?

I saw a documentary on him a few years back. Some agent brought him to America and put him up in his home so he could learn English, acclimate to the US and workout with the Lakers.

His stamina was terrible, just totally unnatural. So it made total sense when they found the tumor that was messing with one of his glands. IIRC, the agent shelled out for the surgery and his strength/stamina improved vastly afterwards, but he was still a pretty clumsy guy. I think it also stopped him from growing any taller.

I seem to recall them saying that aside from being tall, he also had soft hands and a good shot. I remember some footage of him playing in a developmental league in LA (not sure if it was the NBADL, probably not) and it was pretty hilarious how much he towered over all the other players.

I could tell right away just from looking that this guy had acromegaly. It's pretty dangerous for him to be playing basketball actually. His heart could pretty much crap out at anytime with that much exertion.

The NBA is trending towards mobility and athleticism, and he just doesn't fit--he's an absolute sloth even if he's improved in this area. I liked his cameo in Rush Hour 3, but that's about it.

I know how that is. Somewhere in the Ostertag-Skinner period I proposed that we should have our players who sucked at the FT line play the first 5 minutes of every quarter, since then their weak spot wouldn't really matter. I even suggested a couple of FA who were solid players, but available cheap since they stunk at the charity stripe. And there's really nothing absurd about the idea, it's just odd and reeks of desperation.

It's the discouraging season + tight payroll followed by TDOS. It'll make you crazy.
