Not to be argumentative, but when you draft for potential, as opposed to accomplishment, you are taking a big chance that that potential will be fulfilled. Most #1 picks do not pan out like Markelle Fultz or Marvin Bagley, of course. But then often you are paying a player to learn for three or four years, after which there are only 1-2 seasons left on that rookie contract. In monetary terms, it makes more sense to draft someone who can play right away.

These comments are especially pertinent when a team drafts somewhere south of the #5 pick. Ideally, you can draft a player with both accomplishment and a "high ceiling," someone like Caleb Wilson, for instance.
