Having three offensive coordinators in the past three years doesn't help. I think another year of Norv would have been great for the offense, Alex in particular. Being on the east coast, I don't get to see much of the games, so I can only offer an outside view. Basically you're working with an injured Alex, an offense that's re-inventing itself yet again, and young players at the skill positions, and oh yeah, no real threat at WR. [Sorry, Arnaz. You're good, but not great.]
I doubt either would come as a coordinator. I'd take either as a head coach if Nolan doesn't pan out, but I don't expect to entertain that thought until the end of next year.
A lot of people complain about Nolan's "conservative" style, but it reminds me a lot of Cowher. Lots of running and running the clock out, but not averse to trick plays.

Niners sign pass-rushing LB Roderick Green

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers re-signed linebacker Roderick Green on Wednesday, bringing back a solid pass rusher who was cut in training camp.
Green had been out of football since failing to make the 49ers' roster in final cuts. The fourth-year pro was claimed off waivers from Baltimore last year, and had 4 1/2 sacks in nine games with San Francisco.
Only six NFL teams have fewer sacks per passing play than the 49ers (2-6), whose defense has slumped during their six-game losing streak.
San Francisco had a spare roster spot after placing left tackle Jonas Jennings on injured reserve on Monday.
The 49ers also signed guard Sean Estrada to the practice squad. The rookie free agent was cut during training camp.
The moves also mean the 49ers will keep fullback Zak Keasey on the active roster while cutting ties with linebacker Hannibal Navies, who has a knee injury. Keasey was signed from the practice squad to the active roster before each of the 49ers' last three games.

Alex Smith looked absolutely horrible tonight. Words cannot express how bad he was the entire night. Threw for 114 yards, 45 of which came on the last second heave at the end of the half.
He doesn't look anything remotely like an NFL quarterback at this point. I was thinking they should give him until the end of next season, but with how bad he looks, I'm thinking they need to find someone else to finish out the season. They have no reason to try and finish last since their pick goes to the Patriots.

Nolan and fired should not go into the same sentence until he has a capable NFL-caliber QB.

All of that means Andy Lee is our effing MVP.

I am stunned that this season has turned out the way that it has. Contrary to popular belief, i don't feel Nolan is the problem. He is a beaten man right now, and he has to do some soul searching about his Quarterback and his Offensive Coordinator.
Next season it is important that the Niners draft a QB and bring in a veteran QB and declare the job "OPEN". That has to light a fire under Smith. If he does not win the job then he is a lost cause.

I don't think he was embarrassed by the organization, I think he was embarrassed by the play of the team.
And as we all know they are embarrassingly bad right now.
Earlier this year there were a few bright spots to pick up on, but now I see very little.
Next year: Bring in competition for Smith, preferably from the draft or somebody with "potential" rather than a has-been. Bring in a new offensive coordinator. Pray.

I heard McNabb will be on the block, if we bring in anyone I would bring in someone who is GOOD and can teach Smith how to play right. Because our QB coaches obviously haven't done their job, neither has Dilfer, Jaworski was saying all night long how Smith's mechanics are wrong. It's the OC/QB Coach/mentor's job to help point that stuff out, and if they can't point simple things like that out then they're obviously really in over their head. Drafting another QB doesn't do anything to solve our problem for a while anyway because a rookie QB picked in the 4th round isn't just going to come in and solve all our problems. They'll need time to learn. I want us to trade for McNabb. He will make us a good team. He's a good player. Then in 3-4 years when he's falling off he will have taught Alex some stuff and he will be ready again to play. Smith is injured also but I dunno, I think that he needs someone to actually help him get better and Hostler, the current QB coach, Dilfer, etc. aren't that guy. I wouldn't just give up on him but I don't think he's good enough right now to do great either.
Then again the guy showed signs last year of becoming a good player with Norv as the OC. I dunno.
Also we need to get some better WRs. I'm sick of seeing Arnaz and DJack drop the ball, and they're not really good at anything. I have no idea why but Jax isn't the same guy he was in Seattle. And we keep throwing to battle who is dropping it so much this season, atleast last year dude hung on to the ball. This year he can't do anything.
We need to improve our OLine, Smith got sacked like 3 or 4 times again last night. That is going to hurt any QBs performance.
I can't wait for Manny to get back, he really improved our D. Too bad he's out for the season.
It's not a matter of teaching Smith to "play right", IMHO. At some point, people have to quit pointing fingers at everyone AROUND Smith, and realize he's just not that good.
And, if Smith isn't that good and was, in fact, a VERY costly mistake then bringing in someone like McNabb to try and teach him whatever it is people think can be learned at this point in his career just isn't going to work out, either.

I think this team is mismanaged from the top. The off season signings were touted as great but how great were they? They pay $2 mil for a big fat guy to play nose tackle just because he's a big fat guy. I don't remember his name because I never hear it. He was NOT a starter on any team before coming here so what was expected?
Our wide receivers are a mess. We paid attention to making this a strong position yet brought in no one who was strong.
Our most skilled receiver might be Davis but with all his talent, why doesn't he touch the ball more? He's a freak of nature who also has worked very hard to have the skills he has yet why not a little creativity in his use like an end around. Line him up in the backfield. ANYTHING but use him as a blocker most of the time. His agility is not being used and, no, I don't know how to use it. BUT, if it is of no use at the tight end position, maybe he needs to try a season with 20 more pounds on him. He would be a devastating blocker and still able to be fast enough to get open.
The NFL drafting tactic is to take the best quarterback with your top pick and we chose Smith. I don't know if he was the best or even if there WAS a great quarterback that year. With the #1 pick and a few trades, you could have an offensive line that would allow Montana's youngest son look good.

Nolan is handsome, a nice guy, and dresses well but at some point an absolutely atrocious offense becomes the fault of the coaching staff. Didn't I hear that Holmgren was retiring or at the least leaving Seattle? Sounds like he is burned out and needs a year away from the game and then, bingo, please come to SF. Or maybe he just needs to come home.
I am shocked at Smith's incompetence. Absolutely shocked. Some of it has to do with the offensive strategy, some has to do with the wide receivers, but a lot has to do with his inaccurate arm.

The defense will have Lawson back (HUGE loss this year) and maybe there needs to be a youth movement in the defensive line. In any case, the defense is not our problem. Another year together would be nice.

We blew it on draft day a few years ago. I think I would pay a little more attention to the offensive line. Staley is a good start and simply needs experience. Now let's get a few more. I fear Jennings and Allen are at the ends of their respective ropes.

No but what I mean is a lot of these other QBs had a lot of time to learn behind someone. Romo spent some years on the bench. Derek Anderson is playing well this year and spent most of his 1st 2 years on the bench. After 2 or 3 years of Kyle Boller not satisfying the Ravens or whatever(I'm actually not that clear on the Ravens situation so my bad if I'm wrong here) they brought in McNair. There are some other QBs like this too I think. But some QBs have needed some time to learn behind someone. Smith might be one of those QBs, I dunno.
I would probably bring in McNabb anyway even if you think Smith is garbage. He's a good player and he will be for the next 4-5 years, allowing you to draft a QB and let them learn behind McNabb for a couple years. We need someone to end this playoff drought. McNabb is a good QB, we need a good QB, why not him? My main worry is that he'd get hit so much here he'd get hurt again because our offensive line is absolutely terrible and gives up about 3-4 sacks every game.
Still you said people are blaming everything around Smith instead of him. I agree he deserves some of the blame but are you going to say our offensive line is good? I hope not. The only one who has been decent is Staley. Our WRs are terrible, Battle can't even catch anymore and DJack isn't playing well either. Nolan won't give Hill a shot and Lelie won't run his routes right. Gilmore just sucks. When your WRs aren't catching the ball and your OL isn't blocking it makes the QB's job significantly more difficult. Gore isn't playing well either, so I think the OL needs to be blamed for that also. But everybody seems to be ignoring that.
